Bluegrass Bearded Pats Barleywine Style Ale

Bluegrass Bearded Pats Barleywine Style Ale

American Style barleywine: so named because of its high, wine-like alcohol content and the usage of American hops. Deep amber in color and full bodied, with a blend of fruitiness, maltiness and hop bitterness to balance.

3.7 12oz bottle. Looks dark. Aroma of roasted malts, a little smokiness, and some strong floral hops. Flavor more like a hoppy porter than a barleywine. Smooth texture. A pretty good beer.
3.6 From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center Denver 16/09/2010 Fruit and hop aromas. Bronze coloured fruity and strong in alcohol with a hint of bitterness in a full malt finish.
3.0 Unfiltered brown, minimal head. smells like a barleywine.taste of mollasses and brown sugar. Average mouthfeel. Not so drinkable or interesting.Tomthompson’s bottle.
3.4 Pours a rich mahogany, with a tight tan head. The nose is lots of malt sweetness, molasses, caramel and touches of chocolate. The same flavours dominate the taste and being very smooth with superbly integrated alcohol makes it very nice.
3.7 Bottle @ Papsø. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish fruity malty hoppy dark fruit aroma. Sweetish malty dry hoppy spicy dark fruit flavor. Has a dry malty hoppy dark fruit finish.
3.4 Draft. Amber body with orange highlights. Frothy, off-white head fully diminishing. The aroma is heavily malty with notes of sweet caramel, cookie, cereal, toasted grain and nuts. Hint of floral hops. The flavor is lightly bitter and moderately to heavily sweet. The finish is lightlly to moderately bitter and moderately sweet. Medium to full body, slick texture turning sticky in the finish, minimal carbonation. The flavor has more hops than the aroma would predict. Not overly hopped, but more like Bigfoot than a classic barley win. The taste has notes of cherry and orange blended with raspy hop plant.
3.9 On draft at BBC St Matthews. Nice hop and malty sweet nose. Sweetness coats the tongue but the light alcohol burn cuts it. Overall pretty tasty especially in a big mug.
3.9 Bottle at Papsø’s Muddy dark amber color; almost no head. Strong malt flavor, almost like wort out of the kettle, cereals juice, tomato sauce, an impression of stewed apples and phenol. Strong body; strong malt and caramel flavor, a bit buttery and oxidized; correct bitterness. It tastes a bit like a first try, and it’s imprecise, but still enjoyable.
3.6 Pours a nice light brown. Aroma of nice sweet molasses and hops. Pleasant taste, medium to full bodied. Good, just not much depth.
3.4 Bottle 750ml. Clear medium amber color with virtually none head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, oxidide, wood, riped fruit. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. [20101024]
3.5 Bottle at Papsø’s - Thanks. Cloudy red/brown - white head. Sweetness. grassy, green walnuts, light oxidation, bitterness, chocolate, cocoa, fruity, barley, ok hoppy, licorice, high dry finish.
3.7 Bottle at Papsø. Hazy red brown coloured with a small off-white head. Sweet aroma of caramel, dried fruits and rye bread. Sweet and fruity flavour of caramel, dried fruits and hops with notes of alcohol. Hoppy and warming alcoholic finish.
3.3 Bottled. A murky dark amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of over ripe fruits, alcohol, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of dust, over ripe fruits, and prunes, leading to a dry finish, where the alcohol tickles the tongue.
3.7 75 cL bottle. Pours hazy brown with a small brown head. Aroma is dark caramelish and slight breadish. Fruity, alcohol, caramelish and slight cheesy. Toffee, caramelish and slight bitter into a mellow finish.
3.5 cloudy brown film head. toffee dominates aroma. flavor is slightly oxidized, nutty, caramelly, toffee, dry, not sweet. bitterness as if it had been on wood. nice bw
3.6 Bottled. Dark amber coloured. Hazy. Small dense light head. Aroma of ripe fruits, spice, vague sweetness, a tad of (un)intentional sourness?. Ripe fruits, caramel, sweetness, herbs. Medium to full bodied. Sweet and sugary end. Vague bitter. A bit oxcidated.
3.4 Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of St. Fun. Pours a cloudy brown with a small off-white yellowish head. Lots of burned caramel, somewhat oxidized with licorice and subdued hops in the nose. Solid body, low in carbonation, spicy, manure, nuts, overripe fruit, pepper and caramel. Again fairly oxidized. Subdued hoppiness - but definitely there’s some hops there. 241010
3.1 Date: 8/18/2010 Source:Capital Ale House - Downtown Grainy fruitiness with some dried fruit notes in aroma. Clear light amber golden with fine off white head. Sweet malty graininess. Lots of caramel but not a lot of complexity. No bourbon. No wood.
3.5 On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 08/18/2010. Clear dark amber body with a medium creamy light tan head. Big citrus and resiny hop aroma with light caramel. Sweet citrus and resiny hop flavor with lots of caramel and very faint yeast notes. Full body with moderate carbonation. No bourbon or wood character that I could find.
3.5 In my quest to drink a beer from every U.S state, I had Alabama John growler a few southern beers for me for his trip back north. Mahogany pour, spicey fruit aromas. Nice complex malt tastes (Can’t quite put my finger on it). Some hop and roast. It was interesting.
3.2 750ml from 2007 pours a translucent, caramel amber with hardly any beige head. Aroma is raisins, leather, caramel, a little salty, almost like smelling a Virginia Ham, some sherry, some light coconut. Flavor is a big letdown next to the aroma, sweet, caramel, malts, cookie dough, light raisins, pears. Finish is watery. The flavor has completely faded after 3 years.
3.2 Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a lightly hazy copper color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Hoppy citrus hop aroma with caramel and toffee. Taste is leafy and slightly vegetal hops with a caramel backbone and some unexpected fruity notes, including pear, peach and melon. Medium bodied. Alcohol hidden well. Not the best barleywine.
3.5 Very sweet and malty barley wine. Alcohol very pronounced. Intense flavors. Enjoyable beer all around.
2.8 In short: A slightly problematic but well hopped barley wine. Bad bottle? How: Bottle. Age unknown. Tasting session with Montreal crew. The look: Cloudy redish-brown with almost no head In long: Strange “organic” nose. Body has a good amount of caramel but also notes of meat and blood. Weird. Very sweet but it almost goes unnoticed thanks to a generous amount of hops. Limited fruity notes, if any. Lifeless carbonation and body. My drinking partners were less than thrilled about this bottle. The beer had problems but I like hoppy barley wine so I didn’t think it was so bad. With the lifeless body and meaty/blood flavours that I noted I’m assuming that this was a problematic (or old?) bottle. This one definitely requires another try. I don’t know if I’m supposed to hate it or like it, like seeing an endangered animal eating an endangered plant.
(Rating #2649)
2.8 My Bottom Line: Fruity caramel malts topple cheesy wooden hops in this nearly flat, withered Barley Wine. Further Personal Perceptions: -There is no head whatsoever atop the hazy red. -The decent hop bitterness was wooden and leafy. -There was no complexity at all in here, on top of it being a tad tired. Quite boring for was is meant to be a serious sipper. -The fruitiness was not really defined. Bottle.
4.1 Bottle at Toncatcher’s T3 Tasting. Sweet, buttery malty. Amber color. Very good. Mellowed. Easy to drink.
3.8 Bottle shared by Dogbrick. Clear red pour with no head. Malty aroma with caramel and fruit with a bit of hops. Caramel malt flavor up front with subtle hops for a dry finish. Good for a b-wine because it’s sweet but not too sweet.
3.9 12 o.z bottle - thanks riversideak; forget if this was designated by year; pours dark amber with fluffy white head; tons of sugary malts and touch of hops; a little hot, but love the heavy sugar and dark fruits; a pretty dank BW
3.9 Bottle. Pours a dark copper with a thine white head. Aroma is very sweet and hoppy. Hints of citrus fruit, honey, and fig stand out. The flavor is pretty complex. I detected, cherry, caramel, dark fruits, citrus fruits, sweet malts, and hops on my palate. This was a very nice barleywine. Will sample again.
