3.3 Pours very dark brown, with thin tan head. Aroma is malty, with notes of wood. Tastes of a solid stout, with a hint of whiskey barrel. Not very complex, and a light on body. This is a decent stout, and worth trying. However, less complex than most imperials, and the barrel aging is weak. Can’t go ’thumbs up’ on this one.
1.6 Bottle @ Home. Deep brown with a very frothy white head. Nose is bizarrely lemony. Pissy caramel and boiled grain. Taste is strongly acidic. Something’s gone wrong. Lemon and caramel. Very thin and unappealing. Underweight, overly fizzy. A total mess.
3.6 Black stout and bourbon! What a combination! Bottle from the new house from a trip to Louisville, great bar good beer.
3.2 Keg at Beer Run, 11/18/14. Somehow I never rated this despite it being in regular rotation for years at my most frequented bar. Pours a clear dark red with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla, mild roasted malt. The taste is roasted malt, chocolate, nuts, cherries, vanilla, whiskey. Medium bodied, low carbonation, slightly too sweet.
3.3 Not a bad offering at all. A little light in body for sure, but it’s got a nce flavor. The aroma is caramel and roast mostly but definitely has some dark berry-like fruit notes. Flavor follows, including the berries, but that could be a mental thing. It’s easy drinking for an imperial stout, almost too easy, but it’s still good.
3.5 Bottle shared by a friend. Darkest brown in color with a thin beige head. Malty nose with notes of bourbon, chocolate and licorice. Malty flavor with bourbon and chocolate before a roasty finish.
3.5 Fudge and oats with subdued bourbon accents. Mahogany, thick tan head, fair retention no lacing. Bourbon is more assertive on the front of the palate, but gives way to roasted malt notes and coffee. Medium body, soft carbonation.
3.9 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was bourbon, coconut, chocolate syrup and sweet vanilla. The flavor was bitter and roasty with notes of coconut, vanilla, bourbon and marshmallow. Medium length finish. Moderately full bodied. The alcohol was well contained. Tasty.
3.5 Tap @ Bluegrass: Almost black with dark brown trim, a thin khaki collar outlines the top of the brew. Aroma with some mild roasted malts, toasted nuttiness, faint wood & a definitive, albeit not overpowering tannic presence. A touch of vanilla (maybe from the barrel) with a touch of ash. Flavor is sweeter than expected; some lightly syrupy molasses notes, dark cocoa, a bit of vanilla, overly roasted coffee beans, & some slight boozy oak towards the finish for a touch of robustness. Aftertaste mouth coating of dry coffee grounds & mild wood. A tad thin but pretty nice.
3.5 From old notes - bottle at a tasting -- Black with ring head. Bourbon chocolate woody aroma. Chocolate mild dark fruit sweetness woody bourbon finish. Pretty good.
3.2 Nose is woody, slight mints. black with a light brown head. taste is more stout than barrel, a dark chocolate almost dark roast coffee flavor, but with a touch of booze, but very faint. meh.
3.6 Poured from a bottle into a snifter deep auburn brown with a thin white head. Aroma is roasted coffee bourbon. Flavor is initially fantastic. Caramel, brown sugar, bourbon, roasted malts but fades quickly. Maybe its an older bottle (?) Absolutely no booziness here for a 8.9%. Moderate carbonation thin to the mouth. Would like to try again with a fresh brew-not a bad brew at all.
3.0 Nice and dark with a small, decent amount of nutty, and dark malts. No hop bitterness and only a mild carbonated fizz, still good and still strong to drink careful
3.8 "via Thomassova. Christened the new house with this brew. Looks good on the pour. The aroma and flavor is significantly different than most barreled stouts i’ve had. Not a good thing really, but not bad either. Less booze, vanilla, and bourbon. More chocolatey, smoke, and a hint of tang which I though took away from an otherwise excellent brew. The luscious, smooth feel was the beers strong point."
3.5 Light malts and oak aroma. Dark pour not much head. Some malts and coffee and light bitter
2.4 The aroma is weak for a beer of this kind with toasted malt, coffee, and a small hint of bourbon barrel aging. The appearance is brown with a thin head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is thin. Overall not much here to impress or disappoint.
3.5 Good mixture of the level of flavors. Strong chocolate with coffee and Carmel after taste. Just a hint of bourbon. Not as dry as some other syouts
2.9 logging this in from untappd to synchronize all my beers into rate beer for better statistics.
3.3 Pours an inky black from the bottle with minimal tan head that leaves light lace. Aroma is vanilla, sweet barreled goodness, hint of soy. Taste is lighter, kind of dry stout with hints of vanilla and wood. Alcohol is well hidden, but otherwise falls a little short of good.
4.3 Pours jet black with minimal head. Definite smell of bourbon. Chocolate and toffee with hint of bourbon on the taste. Overall, a very good stout
3.7 12 ounce bottle. Rich thick stout with nice overall chocolate notes. Decent overall.
2.8 Pours a thin-looking dark brown with almost no head. No strong aroma, a little molasses and cherry. This doesn’t taste bad, but it’s a little watery and not very flavorful. A bit smoky. I just don’t imagine this was a robust enough stout to really benefit from aging in bourbon barrels.
2.5 Decent drink. Not much head. Mild body. Good color. I would recommend if no better stouts are available.
3.6 Draft at the brewery in Louisville on nitro. Pint glass. Poured a deep brown, nearly black with a thick lasting velvet nitro head. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, prunes/figs, bourbon barrel, oak, and mild spices, The taste was similar. It was on the sweet side with the cocoa and vanilla pretty dominant and the oak barrel on the back end. The nitro made it thick and fluffy (not too thin like the comments below) but in a way I guess that;s kind of cheating. Full body with the nitro and moderate carb.
2.7 (2012-US backlogged in abstinentia) Pint draught @BBC Downtown Theatre, Louisville KY 1709/2012. Vanilla and artificial oak-forward smooth rather than Imp stout, with decent bourbon notes, some cold coffee and alas that typical thin and runny brewpub mouthfeel that makes all of the forementioned bland and a bit of a chore to down.
3.1 Btl pours an opaque deep dark murky brown color with a thick creamy beige head that fades quickly leaving bits of lace on glass. Aromas of bourbon, molasses, vanilla, chocolate, dried figs and a hint of wood.Tastes of sweet toffee, baking cocoa, a bit of vanilla, oak???, bourbon, dried figs and dates. Light to medium body, smooth but watery mouthfeel, low carbonation, slight tingly finish. Its hard to believe this beer is 8.9% abv. The alcohol is hidden very well but unfortunately this beer is just way to thin. The flavors are not bold and do not pop. The stouts I like are usually chewy with lots of texture and flavor that is out of this world. This one is boring, bland and definitely unappealing.
3.1 On tap at Ford?s Fish Shack in South Riding and served in a small snifter. The beer is a dark brown that?s nearly opaque, but shows some cola highlights when held to the lamp. Minimal head once it got to the table which settled to a sheen. Clearly a barrel aged beer from the aroma which is deep with vanilla and oak. There are roasted malt, molasses, and char notes as well. Taste is not exciting and leads off watery. It is moderately sweet with vanilla, molasses, and a dusting of cocoa. It is also moderately bitter on the finish with espresso, oak, char, and roasted malt flavors. A weak medium body, thin texture, moderate carbonation, and a sweet woody finish.
2.8 Small tan head, short lived but with fair lacing. Black color. Faint bourbony notes in the nose. Thin bodied, soft carbo. Faint bourbon flavors, roast. Lightly sweet malts, roast. Dry, bland finish. No body home! Props to neohippie2 for the bottle.
4.1 Very dark color with almost no head. Definite smell of bourbon, chocolate and vanilla. Almost a Port wine aroma mixed in as well. Wood, bourbon, sweet taste, lite chocolate with good carbonation. This is a medium bourbon taste well balanced and I enjoyed this brew. A great beer
2.8 Poured a thin white head. Great nose of oak and light bourbon. Tasted it and all my hopes were dashed. Extremely thin with slight vanilla and raisin.
