Boneyard / Three Floyds Armored Fist Imperial CDA

Boneyard / Three Floyds Armored Fist Imperial CDA

Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale
Imperial Cascadian is the NW style of this brew. This is a very well balanced, extremely hoppy black ale. It is very reminiscent of a winter ale. Armored fist is a collaboration beer brewed with the good ole boys from Three Floyd’s Brewing out of Chicago.

3.7 CBC16, red session, tap. Clear, almost black with a ligh brown head. Aroma heavy malty (caramel, roasted, burnt) and hoppy (piney, citrusy, grapefruity). Flavor light sweet, heavy bitter of dark malts and hops. Medium+ body.
3.6 Sample at CBC 2016. Malty and hoppy smell with grape and caramel. Lacks something to stand out.
4.3 On tap at CBC 2016, day 2. Pine resin, grapefruit, cocoa. Extremely hoppy and refreshing.
3.6 Tap at CBC. Pours deep clear amber, tan lace. Aroma: pine, citrus, grapefruit, light caramel, bread crumb.
3.4 On tap at ramen to biiru. Pours dark brown. Aroma is roasted, hoppy, balanced. Slight alcohol.
3.4 A brown beer with a lazing tan head. The aroma has notes of citrusy hops, malt, and straw. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and citrusy hops, leading to a bitter finish.
3.9 On tap at Cardinal. Pours black with a small creamy tanned head. Aroma is dark malty, roast and liquorice. Taste is well balanced, dry piney hops, slick mouthfeel , low carbonated, lingering liquorice, I dont need more.
3.7 On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Black colour, creamy beige head. aroma of pine, grapefruit and some roast malts. Rich flavour, moderately sweet, with a warming mouthfeel. Roasty notes of coffee, but first and foremost strong notes of piney and grapefruity hops, a hint of oak. .
3.8 Draft at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014 - Session 3. Pours amber-brown with a foamy, tan cap. The nose holds burnt pine, light cocoa. Medium sweet flavour with some dark bread, citrus, pine. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous to close out, with further dark and bready malts, toasted pine, orange citrus. Tasty and very drinkable. Good CDA.
3.9 Deep hazy Amber/copper/brown, with a thin sticky light beige head. Roasty dark and piney dank aroma with a hint of cocoa and bitter grapefruit. Nice grapefruity and roasty flavors compliment nicely, with grapefruity/piney bitterness taking the lead, a fair dose of roast and light earthy cocoa soon following. Bitter but balanced and appropriately roasty. Loads of grapefruit.
3.7 Draught @ Whats Brewing - Friday Session 2, Stavanger Pours dark brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, orange and chocolate. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long chocolate, caramel, citrus, orange and grape finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.1 Draft pour. Cola brown. Faint cream tan head. Aroma is faint roast and pine. Taste is assertively piney with hints of roasted malt and booze. Like chewing on a roasted pine cone. Chewy, sweet, boozy.
3.6 Flight pour on tap at the brewery tap room (Bend, Or). Pours a deeper dark brown carmelized chocolatey hue. Dark, decent haze and mellow toasty hues into the edges and bottom. Frothy firm light brown head atop is sizable, firm and cakey. A good glow and healthy darkness. Aromas are a bit toasty, firmly bitter, big grapefruit and subtle gumball tropical appeal. Some toast, earth, firmer florals. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, mellow toast, carmelized malt and subtle toasty lifem big grapefruit, florals and grapefruit. Some tropical appeal, good hop profile with some subtle medicinal appeal. Big hops, fruity but an odd mesh there at times. Backend is toasty, carmelized and a touch brash. That hop profile is potent and fruity but it just never meshes well for me. Bitter, citric, and lots of pithy and rind oil grapefruit as we finish up with toast, subtle medicinal feel. An odd ball. A potent, top tier hop progile just doesn’t mesh well for me into the backend and finish.
3.5 On tap at What’s Brewing 2015 Dark, big creamy tanned head. Smell of citrus, roast, resins, dark malts. Medium sweet, citrus, zest, coffee, roast. Heavy bitter, resin tail
3.4 2015-10-28: On tap at What?s Brewing Beer Festival 2015, Stavanger. Pours dark brown with brown head. Aroma of pine needles. A bit too dominated by hop bitterness, almost no malt aroma. Bitter finish, thin bodied. Re-rated 2016-04-11: On tap at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours dark brown with off-white head. Aroma of pine needles, dark fruits, some citrus. Tastes quite sweet with balancing bitterness. Bitter finish.
3.6 solid black ipa - not a standout, but nice roast/grapefruit combo that worked well.
3.8 On tap at Hops and Pie poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, grapefruit, pine and light earthiness. Palate was light to medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, grapefruit, pine and light earthiness with a smooth dry bitter lingering roasty grapefruit finish.
3.9 Sampled at GABF 2015 with Andrew and Paul. Pours a dark black body with off white head. Aroma is fresh hop - fruity and almost funky. Mouthfeel is medium with bright pine and citrus. Super faint roast character - essentially none. Great black IPA.
3.7 On tap at chucks hop shop. Aroma is kinda blah, just not much to it and muddled. Flavor is pretty interesting and strong. Tart in a strange but kinda good way. Nice chocolate in the finish.
3.8 Draft. Small beige head atop dark brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, orange, some grapefruit, caramel, pine. Taste is moderately sweet, grapefruit, some range, caramel, light pine, roast. Medium-full body, some resin, alcohol well contained.
3.8 CBC 2015. Pours dark brown with a low tan head. Aromas of peach, apricot, roasted malts, slight almonds and chocolate. Taste is peach, apricot, roasted malts, slght chocolate. Mouthfeel is smooth with low carbonation.
5.0 The thing about collabs is that you never know who brought the wood. But since it’s a "NW style" (which could mean anything, given an epic fail as to recipe transparency), I’m thinking Boneyard/Tony Lawrence’s contribution was pretty large. This might be the best black beer out there. That’s saying a lot, given Siren/Stillwater’s When The Light Gose Out (just say yes to the activated charcoal in Hawaiian Black Lava Sea Salt !) and Moonlight’s Death and Taxes.
3.8 Dark black, creamy tan head. Had off draft. Nice burnt flavor, roasted malt and coffee. Still cold off draft so alcohol flavor was quite present. Slightly sweet finish and also slightly acidic/sour. Palate is smooth and mildly carbonated. Sneaky strong nice beer.
3.5 On tap at the Hop Shop Ballard. Pours near black with a cream brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has creamy dark grains and earthy pine with a light chalky note. Flavor combines creamy dark grains with a slight chalkiness and earthy bitter pine.
3.6 Draught@CBC2015. Coppery black colour with a mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is mild roasted notes, some floral and fruity notes along with grass. Flavour is toasted, some fruity, floral and mild resiny notes, mild chocolate malt pushing through as well. Also has some mild notes of alcohol sweetness lurking in the flavour.
3.9 On tap @ Chuck’s CD. Pours opaque black with medium creamy mocha head. Aroma is dark roasty malt, solid chocolate notes, then earthy floral dark citrus hops. Taste is clean dark malt, light roastiness, and well-balanced hops on the back. Notes of pine, dark citrus, and earthy hops. Seems much smaller than 10% due to smooth flavor. Although the inherent limitations of the style remain, this is what a CDA should be, the best of an IPA and a dark beer.
3.6 Draught @ Mikkeller Bar Victoriagade. Pours translucent black with a frothy mocha head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty and fruity with roasted malts, burnt crisp bread, caramel, grapefruit juice, mango, pineapple, moist grass, pine needles, resin, coffee and lemon zest. Taste is sweet, bitter, slightly malty and slightly fruity. Mouthfeel is soft, round, slightly astringent, tiny boozy and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with roasted malts, burnt caramel, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, coffee, moist grass, pine needles, resin, lemon zest and hints of alcohol. Bit too sweet and a bit too strong but nose is top CDA stuff.
3.3 Red brown. Aroma caramel malt syrupy. Tastes peachy slight tobacco, rye. Watery body. Not enough roasts.
3.0 Tap (TCBW15) (6:4:6-:3:11=3.0-) Odd aroma. Pungent hops, a nice roast, but no synergy between the two. Ditto the taste - they’re fighting each other. This is just an IPA with added darkness. Good example of why I don’t like the style.
