Boon Oude Geuze VAT 108

Boon Oude Geuze VAT 108

The very wine-like accents in this Traditional Oude Geuze are combined with a distinctive 'old beer' character, which gives it a full-bodied and robust flavour, with an unmistable hints of volatile acidity that never overwhelm the senses. Cask no. 108, dating from 1935, came to us from a different brewery, whose beers contained some volatile acidity. The foeder now adds a bit of character to all our geuse blends.

4.4 (Bottle) Golden amber colour with foamy, off-white head. Fruity, sourish nose with notes of grapefruit, unripe green grapes, lemon, barnyard, stable, horse blanket and oak wood. Fruity, tart taste with grapefruit, lemon, gooseberries, stable, barnyard, wood and a dry and tart finish with a mild bitterness. Medium body, mainly dry. Has a distinct and fairly aggressive acidity, but somehow remains elegant and refined in all its tartness. Great stuff.
4.2 Bottle, 375 ml, shared with Max and Miro B. Cloudy orange with white head. Nice funk, barnyard, oak, citric, medium+ sourness. Medium bodied. Very nice. Earlier Rating: 12/17/2017 Total Score: 4.1 Bottle, 375 ml shared at MBR, Kiselo Druženje. Pours cloudy orange golden with white head. More fruity than 92, more sour, barnyard, funk, wood, nice. Lively carbonation. Medium bodied.
4.4 Kolor bursztynowy, klarowny, po dolewce pojawia się lekkie zmętnienie. Piana biała, wysoka i trwała. Zdobienia to nieznaczne spienione nacieki i wysepki. Tekstura szorstka do miękkiej. Posmak kwaśny długi z długim pestkowym finiszem.
4.4 375ml bottle. Pours a mild gold with small amounts of white head. Rich white fruits on the nose with citrus and zest, developing into spices and floral notes. Light to medium body with mild efflorescence. Strong white fruits at the forward with a mild zest, citrus, floral, and earthy notes. Hints of sweetness through most of it but it dries out at the back leaving to wanting more.
4.2 Bottle @ Etre Gourmet, Belgium. Pours hazy Golden with a White head. Complex nose. Barnyard, Apple, sesame and citrus. Sharp funky and crisp dry finish. Superb. 4.0 Bottle. Clear golden amber with a cm of white head that never quite disappears. Horsey aroma with old lemons, the laundry, apples, some prickly spices. Tastes like a late summer sunset. Sour with sweeter fruity notes gradually gathered up by the lemon and both woody and prickly spices until just the sourness remains. Dryish at the end. The division of Boon is limited by the extent of the market - and the market has grown. Earlier Rating: 11/17/2019 Total Score: 3.9 Bottle. Clear, slightly rosy amber with a white head that hangs around awhile. Classic gueuze aroma of old lemons, oak, apricot stones, white wine on the turn. Hints of autumnal fruit. Medium bodied, not really slippery. Moderate carbonation. More cidery taste with moderate sourness and an oaky zinginess.
4.5 Geuze dal bel colore ambrato chiaro tendente all'arancio. Le note caratteristiche sono una acidità importante ma non invadente e note di cantina.
4.3 Bottle from Delhaize ('past' its due date so at 50% off...). Bottled: 11/2018. Clear dark orange, small, frothy, white head. Aroma of plum, rhubarb, old orange, green apple, horseblanket, leather, unripe apricot. Taste has sour rhubarb, green apple & plum, some sweetish apricot, funky wet straw & hay; lemon acid touches mixing well with tart fruit and lactic tones. Earthy finish with rhubarb & acidic apple, old grassy hops, touch of vinegar. Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Crisp, refreshing, complex, a real treat. Earlier Rating: 3/1/2019 Total Score: 4.3 22 February 2019. Bierproeverij CVO Gent, pre-tasting welcome drink - thanks to Peter! Shared with Anke. Bottled: 20/12/16. Batch #74503. Pours hazy golden-orange with a lasting, small, foamy, off-white head; some lacing. Intense & deep aroma of cellar, barnyard, dust, leather, attic, cobwebs, vinegar, horseblanket, wood, faint vanilla, unripe apricot, old apple. Taste is medium to heavy funky sour, pure leather, dust & cellar, supported by a light woody bitterness that has oak, barnyard & more pronounced vinegar; sweetish unripe fruit notes in the back but hardly noticeable, faintly lactic & grassy too. Very dry, woody finish, more vinegar, leather, cellar & dust, tannins at work, faint grassy hops, and some subtle warming white wine-like alcohol to top it off (or, in combination with the vinegar, something I like to call 'sour Jesus wine'). Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Very complex brew, nicely done.
4.2 Bottle purchase and Spegelaere Oostende. This beer pours a hazy orangy yellow body with a small head that disappears fast. The odours are typically gueze with some acidity and fruityness combined. The taste is super complex, but still balances acidity and fruityness. Very interesting and very agreeable because of te nice balancing.

3.9 0.375 l bottle from 'Alehub', bottled in November 2018, cellared for almost a year. Almost clear, deep amber with a medium large, foamy, almost stable, white head. Sourish, citrus, rather fruity and gently funky aroma of lemon, rhubarb, horse blanket, oak and light hay. Medium body, fairly astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Rather acidic by Boon standards, even with odd vinegary notes. Still quite a pleasure to drink, extremely refreshing, especially on such a hot summer day as of today. Faint oak, stonefruit, light grain notes and hints of alcohol. Pours a somewhat hazy, copper-gold with a medium sized, thick, white head that recedes steadily to a small film that lingers. Faint lacing and small legs. Flavor is somewhat acidic with a light sweetness and light grain notes. Light bitterness and light alcohol notes. Moderate lemon and herbal funk with lighter notes of earthy funk and horse blanket. Faint stone fruit and oak notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol notes. Overall, a really solid geuze. Loads of classic Boon character in the aroma, but in typical Boon fashion the flavor isn't quite as robust.
