Boon Oude Geuze VAT 110

Boon Oude Geuze VAT 110

VAT 110 owes its slightly dry but very full-bodied flavor, with a hint of vanilla and dry fruit, thanks to foeder no. 110. This foeder used to serve as a cognac cask and has been used as a Lambic cask by our brewery since 2009. This Traditional Old Geuze is characterised by a wealth of flavours that developed from by the Brettanomyces yeast strains in the cask.

4.1 Appearance: Pours clear deep golden. Small pour in order to keep the beer cool, so no description of head and lacing. 4/5 Aroma: Orange, grapefruits, peach, apricot, wood, clove and soft cheese, with slight hints of funk. 8/10 Taste: Citrus fruits and stone fruits with hints of wood. On the dry side. Crispy acidity. Dry tart citrusy finish, lingering. 8/10 Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, refined and smooth, slight oily texture, soft carbonated. 5/5 Overall: I didn't associate the beer with congnac cask until I saw the introduction on the label. I consider it was finished in a chardonnay cask according to the stone fruits in flavor. The congnac cask, after all, was reused for years. 16/20
3.8 Bottle 375ml @ Gunnfryd Pours hazy golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, funky, barnyard and citrus. Taste is light to medium sweet and medium sour with a long citrus, funky and barnyard finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.
4.0 Quite excellent, exceeding my expectations. Appearance is light orange, clear, bright, not much head or lace. Nose is mostly fruity, with some mustiness. Very soft tingly feel initially then quickly get a bit of tartness, that fades out and yields to a dry finish. Taste is the vanilla, a bit of lemon, oakiness, leather. Quite complex. Not overly sour quite well balanced.
3.9 375ml bottle. Clear dark golden pour with a small frothy off white head with some decent staying power. Wet horse blanket, hay, cheese rind, funk, light oak, earthiness with a bit of a damp cellar mustiness, nice depth with a hint of sugar and booziness, dry, moderate+ carbonation and moderate body, long finish with a nice funk and sour ending. Solid.
4.0 37,5cl Bottle @ Belgiuminabox.com, Antwerpen, Belgium. Hazy amber colour with a medium size white head. Aroma is brett, fruits, oak. Taste is brett, citrus, grapes, oak, hints of berries. Medium body, average carbonation.
3.9 Poured from a 375 ml bottle. Aroma has medium light cherry pie and grape notes with lighter grape must and lemon. Light grain and oak notes with medium light earthy, herbal funk. Pours a hazy, copper color with a medium large, medium thick, frothy, white head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers. No lacing and faint legs. Flavor is somewhat acidic with light sweetness and hints of grain. Light cherry pie, stone fruit and grape notes. Light earthy, herbal phenolic notes with hints of must. Mouthfeel is medium.bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice lambic but I think my favorite from the box is 108. This has a nice fruitiness but the funk and acidity is a bit light.

Lemon brett. Some cracked peppercorn. Taste has some fruit sweetness, with tart, apple skin and bretty bitterness. Medium body. Drinks easy at the ABV. Foamy carbonation. Very light acidity. Tart and fruity apple to finish.

3.6 Bottle, 375ml corked. A clear golden colored beer with a small, dense, white head. The aroma has a touch of booze, with citrus more than lemon, a light funk and an unusual but nice spiced, peppery touch. It's dry and tart, with a nice carbonation level. Cognac notes, some peppery hints, lemon, grapefruit and barnyard. Flower hints. Lasting funky finish. Not sure about this one, there's something unusual going on, but I like it anyway. 190906

4.0 Bottle, bb 12/36. Amber with a a white head that fades to an inch and never quite disappears. Aroma is rich and mellow with zingy brackenish funk notes over the top. Toast, poached quince, peach blossoms. Creamy, highish carbonation. Rich brioche, caramel, peach before taut funky notes grip towards a drying finish. The finish has a bit of grilled pineapple about it. Very good.
4.0 Bouteille: Deep golden, hazy, no head to speak of, but a kind of carbonation is still visible, the sourish cellary-musty nose is dominated by lemony and also (sweetish!!!) woody-vinous aromas; solid sour-sweet flavour, full bodied, surprisingly soft for a Gueuze; lingering sour-sweet vinous-woody and lemony finish. Chapeau...
4.0 0.375 l bottle from 'Belgiuminabox.com', bottled in December 2016, cellared for almost two years. A little hazy, deep amber with a thin, frothy, almost stable, off-white head. Minimally sweetish, sourish, quite funky and gently fruity aroma of ripe lemon, leather, horse blanket, oak and some gooseberry. Minimally sweet, gently sour, rather funky, woody, quite fruity taste of horse blanket, leather, overripe lemon, oak, even some tobacco and a touch of gooseberry, followed by a medium long, gently tart, fairly woody-dry, quite funky finish. Medium body, gently astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Very complex and funky Gueuze, less fruity than most of the other variants by Boon, nicely rustic.
