Boulder Beer Planet Porter

Boulder Beer Planet Porter

Planet Porter is a big beer for everyone. Don't be afraid of the dark; this beer is very drinkable and remarkably smooth, brewed for a malty, coffee-like flavor.

A once almost extinct style of ale, Boulder Brewing helped revive the category and this is now one of the oldest American porters.

3.3 October 2010. From tap, sampled at the brewery. Dark brown color with a tan head. Roasted malt, chocolate, coffee. A bit thin, but drinkable.
2.8 December 30th, 2011 - Boulder Beer’s Planet Porter is much like the other beers lined up on my tasting tray. Each has a semblance to its respective style, but nothing stands out. There’s too little character and quality, and that pattern seems to extend from light to dark. The Planet Porter smells chalky and faint, and what scent I do gather is simply sweet with milk and dark chocolates. The flavor is likewise chalky, coating the tongue with a too-mild chocolate flavor, which disappears quickly on the aftertaste. It’s a great beer to pair with the pub grub, but on it’s own, its another disappointment from Boulder Beer.
3.6 Draft: Poured a blackened brown with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malts. Taste is roasted malts, light chocolate, and coffee.
3.2 Bottle:   Deep brown, nearly black, deep ruby hues, moderate to large frothy light beige head, fairly nice lacing.   Soft roasty nose, slight bakers chocolate with a hint of coffee.   Not as robust on the tongue as the nose suggested.   Seems like mainly roasted malts, very little hop background.   As it warms the coffee comes out a bit more on the backside.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Finishes fairly clean, but a bit light.   Low in hops, decent roast (at least up front), with a slight coffee finish.   Not as hefty as others.
1.9 12 oz bottle pours dark brown with large tan head. Chocolate and roasted malt aroma. Same taste.
3.8 on tap at O’Niell’s. Nitro. Appearance is amazing, no doubt owing in small part to the nitro, black in color with small creamy, frothy white head and excellent lacing. Aroma is subtle with roasted caramel and chocolate malt. Full bodied with a creamy texture and soft carbonation, moderately sweet. This was a very good porter, I enjoyed this.
3.4 12 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, oats and a subtle sweetness. Taste coffee, sweet malts and a hint of smoke.
3.3 Pours black with a tan head that disappears fairly quickly. Smoky, espresso and chocolate aromas with a little bit of fruit in there. Mostly a bitter, astringent taste with a hint of chocolate. Bit thin and the carbonation is a bit harsh.
3.5 Bottle from Breeze Thru. Pours an opaque black with a light brown head leaving nice lacing. Aroma has choco/caramel, some coffee, oatmeal and molasses, with a faint dark fruit presence. Taste is of bakers chocolate, meat smoke, some roast and some caramel. More bitter than sweet. A bit thin. Boulder continue along their run of "meh" brews. Through some depth of flavor in there!
3.2 Bottle. Sweet chocolate malt and light lactic aroma. Dark brown with a large tan head. Astringent coffee, ash, light acidic, and earthy hops flavor. Light body, moderate carbonation.
3.3 Tap. Pours deep, dark brown with average, fizzy beige head; short retention and some lacing. Aroma is light roast malt, chocolate, coffee, figs, light floral hops, and a hint of ash. Flavor is roast malt forward with some earthy hops and dark fruit esters; dries out towards the end with a chocolate and smoke finish. Light/medium body and low carbonation.
3.1 12oz bottle, best by 9/25/12. Black color. Thin khaki head. Some lace. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Lighter body. More dry texture. Light toasty malt. Light cocoa, but it’s mostly just kind of watered down. Little earthy hops. Light bitter taste, some sweet. Fine, respectable porter
3.0 Pours opaque brown. Minimal nose. Taste is slight chocolate with mild aftertaste. All right.
2.0 Bottle. Dark brown, tan head. Smells of chocolate, smoke. Tastes of apples and burnt, not in a good way. Once you take a sip the only flavor that lingers in your mouth is the burnt one. It’s really not very enjoyable. Not well balanced, not good.
3.8 Great beer. Had off a nitrous tap which made it very creamy. The taste was great.
3.6 Draught at the Boulder Beer in DIA, on October 15, 2012 Very dark brown to black color, tan to light brown head. Roasted, grainy, sweet, fruity taste. Spritzy mouthfeel, medium low bitterness. Sweet, roasted scent.
3.6 Tried this on tap at Ernie's bar & pizza in Denver, CO. Great medal winning porter with malty coffee flavors, hints of roasted nuts and chocolate. Good beer.
3.0 On tap at Denver Center City Marriott. Dark pour, usual porter stuff. Slight lactic notes among a roasted malt profile and a slight fruity sweetness that was also not really appealing. Okay. Meh.
3.2 12oz bottle -pours really dark ruby with a finger of tan head that quickly vanishes and thin lacing. Noise is roasted chocolate and coffee. Flavor adds water. Thin body, geez. Bitter due to roastedness. A light porter. That’s it.
2.1 Dark brown, amber hues, no head. Interesting aroma. Sort of a burnt woody scent. Some chocolate malts. Ugh. Taste is a let down. Very burnt, chcoolate and smoked. semi-sweet chocolate at the finish.
2.7 Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is nutty, chocolate, some smokiness, grass, coffee, bread. Smells all right. Taste is dry and nutty; some dark chocolate, a hint of coffee; pretty mild. Unfortunately, not real full flavored. Glad to have tried it; probably won’t be drinking it again.
2.9 Really a mostly-average porter. Cocoa and coffee are devloped but it has a weak palate.
3.1 Bottle at DIA - 04/06/12. Very dark brown approaching black with a thin tan head. Light roast malt nose allied to a little sweet chocolate. Chocolate taste, malts, dark fruit backdrop. Lightish body a little on the watery side, drinkable though.
3.7 Medium to heavy body. Thick, mostly dark chocolate flavor with some sweetness that tapers off at the end. Some coffee as well.
3.4 On tap at Rattle N Hum, July 2012. Black with a small tan head. Aroma and taste of roasted malt, coffee and some fruit. Medium mouth feel and easy to drink.
3.5 pours very dark brown with a thin tan head and great lacing. aroma is smokey with bitter hop notes, chocolate and coffee. taste is bitter chocolate with a hint of coffee beans. finish is oddly fruity.
3.6 substantial enough moderate body with some sweetness and flavor of burnt coffee with hints of chocolate. smooth with frothy head that has body. straight malt flavor without the need for an added gimmick.
3.4 Bottle. Pours black with a smallish tan head that leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, a touch of coffee, some earthy hops. Flavor is roasted malt, lots of coffee, some chocolate. Some burnt malt, but all in all, pretty smooth. Long sweet finish. Medium mouthfeel.
3.1 Drank on a hot July 4th...Aroma of chocolate, malt, and a hint of fruit. Good body no after taste or heavy finish. Easy to drink
2.9 On draft at the Denver Airport Boulder Brewing Pub. Pours a nice dark brown with an off-tan head. Nose is some light roast, some coffee, and some dark chocolate. Flavor is roast, subdued coffee, and some dark chocolate. Light in body and pretty good.
