Boulevard Funky Pumpkin Spiced Sour Ale

Boulevard Funky Pumpkin Spiced Sour Ale

Funky Pumpkin is our unique spin on a pumpkin beer. Spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and ginger, the final beer is a blend of brewhouse soured beer and beer aged in a stainless steel tank with brettanomyces. Tart and slightly earthy, Funky Pumpkin features a subtle toffee/caramel malt character that allows pumpkin pie spices to shine.

3.0 Tap at festival. Pours clear gold. Aroma and flavor are pumpkin, toast, faint funk, and some spice. Light/medium body.
3.2 12 oz. bottle Thin White head. Smell of pumpkin, ginger cinnamon clove. Golden straw in color. Taste is just above average and the thing is this would be better if not a sour. A little bubbly on the tongue. smooth. with no after bite. Overall average sour with the best thing going is the aroma.
3.2 Pours a clear golden orange, minimal white head. Aroma is cinnamon, clove, light Brett Funk, citrus, pumpkin spice. Flavor is light sour fruits, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, Brett, Tart lemon. OK.
3.0 Bottle poured into a shaker. Orange gold color and a fizzy off white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is mulling spices, pumpkin, coriander, and cinnamon. I could smell this all day. Definitely sour with pumpkin, lemon, and a hint of spices. Aftertaste is mostly lemon. Carbonation is sadly a bit flat and body is a little thin. An odd brew. Not sure how how I feel about all of these sours Boulevard has been coming out with. Worth trying to expand the palate but probably not something I’d let outside of the tasting room.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a golden color with white head. Fruity, cider, tart, apple, spice aromas. Tart, fruity, pumpkin, apple flavors. This was the second best beer of my blind tasting of seven pumpkin beers. Definitely a different take on a pumpkin beer. A little surprised Boulevard is discontinuing this one after this year, seems like a nice little niche.
3.4 12oz bottle: This one pours a clear, slightly orangish golden color. There was a bit of a white head. Minimal lacing. The nose is good. Pretty good amount of pumpkin pie spices. Even though it isn’t over done, it still overpowers any hont of the brett. The taste is just the opposite. Definitely a bit of funkiness to it, with the pumpkin pie spices in the background. Tart and a little earthy. I’d rather have this than many of the other pumpkin beers out there!
3.4 Bottle from K&L in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin soda (brett aroma overwhelmed by nutmeg and cinammon...so not particularly funky). Taste is sour with a the pumpkin spice flavors swimming beneath. Not a pleasant mix of flavors...needed more malt, cream, something dense to carry these spices. Funky in the wrong way.
3.7 [Bottle] Pours clear amber with a small head. Aroma is brett, a little leather, and weak spices (ginger?). Taste is also certainly unique, with tartness up front, then that acidity melds into pumpkin spices, and then finally toasted malt towards the end. I do sometimes get kind of an odd plastic character from the interaction of all of those things. Long finish. Fairly thin. Overall, this is a weird beer that I feel like I shouldn’t like, but I do. I do wish that the pumpkin character was dialed up some more though.
3.5 Aromas of pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, ginger, straw, and brettanomyaces. Taste is pumpkin, straw, spices;then tart lemon-lime zest with some pie crust; then a sour brettanomyaces finish and after taste.
1.2 This doesn't make pumpkin beer better, it's makes sour beer worse. This is garbage and a drain pour.
3.5 Really interesting concept. Pours hazy orange. Nose is pimpmin pie spices, yeast. Tatse is tart, more of the spices (nutmeg, ginger, allspice) an apple cidery sweetness. Not much actual pumpkin or barrel, and a little thin in body. Not a fan of pumpkin beers in general, but I enjoy this with the tartness.
3.6 A little tart. A little cinnamon and pumpkin. Works together surprisingly well. Interesting take on the pumpkin seasonal here and it does well.
2.9 Bottle poured into glass. Pours light amber with very little head. Aroma is pumpkin and spice and taste is lightly sweet.
3.5 Bottle picked up at D&Q The Beer Station Houston. It pours clear rich gold with a small white head. The aroma is tangy, funky, fruity, obvious pumpkin / squash vibe, toffee, rather spicy, cinnamon, nutmeg and gingerbread. The taste is crisp, tart, tangy, earthy funk, lemon sherbet, pumpkin, toasty spice (but not nearly as much as on the aroma), Granny Smith apple and some bright acidity with a some earthy pumpkin on the finish. Medium body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Quite a disconnect between aroma and taste. Quite a unique take on the pumpkin beer. Good fun.
2.9 Great concept ! Light color, mild funk. Spice, biscuit malts. Earthy, dusty flavors. Lemon rind.Very mild seasonal flavors. No pumpkin. In a blind taste test I would guess this is a saison with some allspice n nutmeg. I like it, but it doesnt live up to its name...
3.3 On tap. Orange in color with small off-white head. Aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg. Layered flavors of spices, pumpkin with some sour in the finish. Interesting and decent.
3.4 12oz bottle. Sort of an odd but modern sour edged pumpkin beer. A little thin, medium bodied I suppose. OK, kind of sweet, candy like sour tones. Not that impressive of an offering but maybe a harbinger of pumpkin beers to come.
3.5 I really liked it. The spice may have been a little weird with the sour at first but it was a really different take on pumpkin beer.
4.1 12 ounce bottle - $1.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. A presumed ’best by’ date of 16DEC2016. Appearance: Pours a deep golden body, quite clear, with a medium-small, near white head. Smell: Moderately spicy, lightly funky aroma with a thin, sweetish coating of toffee and a little pumpkin pie filling. Taste: A bright tartness yielding to a light breadiness, a blend of autumnal spicing (predominately ginger and nutmeg) and the underlying albeit restrained pumpkin. Subtle brett character. Modest sweetness. A drying, slick, slightly sour finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium-plus carbonation. Overall: I’m enjoying the refreshing twist on the somewhat stale, cookie-cutter-ish style.
3.6 Solid hybrid of a pumpkin spiced sour. Plenty of spices. Tart kick. Tad thin, but still pretty tasty.
3.7 Gold with a cream head. Nose is spice, pumpkin, fall and tart. Smooth palate, sour, acidic, pumpkin spice in the finish.
3.6 Pour is a clear amber with a small white head. Aroma is a big hit of spice. Lots of nutmeg and cinnamon. Flavor is again with the pumpkin pie spice. A bit thin and there is a very minor tartness that hits you after the swallow. Props for the spices being flavorful and fresh but this was a bit watery and the tart/sourness was minimal at best.
3.5 Funky barn, cinnamon, some spices, slight metallic smell? Clear, deep golden color with a white head. Slightly sour up front. Mild sourness gets cut off by a nice complex sweetness. Complex, notes of pumpkin pie, cinnamon, all spice. Finish is a mixture of tart and spices. Slick mouth feel. Very nice, interesting beer. Probably better suited for early fall as quite refreshing for Indian summer.
3.6 Draft. Pours clear gold with a very thin white head. Tastes like tart citrus, some sour pumpkin, gourd, grapefruit, and cinnamon. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sour pumpkin, tart citrus, common, and gourd.
2.3 Spiced aroma. Pours a golden in color with strong white head. Light tart flavor mixed interestingly with spiced pumpkin. The flavors really don’t go well together in this case. I gave this beer a second try and didn’t care for it either time.
3.4 12 ounce bottle Lurking in the back of the fridge, this beer came out during a time when winter decided to make its last stand. Taking the seasonal in a different direction, it manages to impress. It makes me remember why I should revisit Boulevard more often. Aroma / Appearance - A transparent mandarin orange body glows as it illuminates the surrounding area. Slight tartness mingles with nutmeg and cinnamon. A dry feel permeates the presence which overall falls in the middle of the pack. Flavor / Palate - Pumpkin pie splashed with a few drops of vinegar bites at the tongue and throat. An easy drinker impresses with the ease at which it goes down. The finish lasts long after the final sip for a little extra value. Overall this $1.89 beer lived up to all expectations and then some.
3.7 Bottle from Final Gravity. Pours hazy gold with a very slight white head. Aroma of pie spice with a little funkiness. Med body, maybe. Flavor is heavy on ginger, but other spices are detectable; it’s very lightly sour, and I’m not sure I’m getting Brett. It is a bit earthy. Seems heavy on citrus for sour, but who knows. Certain a very different pumpkin beer.
3.6 Bottle. Yellow pour, slightly hazy, with a small white head. Aroma of pumpkin spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Flavor is more sour, lemon, bread, vanilla, tart, nutmeg, and mild sweetness. Interesting, and pretty tasty.
3.7 11/20/15. 12oz bottle in Destin, probably Beach’s. Amber orange pour with a nice khaki head. The aroma disappoints me... typical pumpkin beer - pie spice, nutmeg, vanilla, ginger... maybe a touch of tart, but definitely mostly pumpkin pie spices. Better flavor, tart, sour, light malts, hints of spice. Smells like a pumpkin beer, tastes like a sour. I’m actually surprised this isn’t listed as a sour/wild ale, but I won’t meddle.
3.8 On tap at Churchill’s Pub & Grille. Light Amber gold, thin white head. Aroma is spicy and lightly sweet bread. Flavour is light ginger, spice cake, with light lactic sour character. Mildly sour, spicy and nice. This worked for me!
