Boulevard Hibiscus Gose

Boulevard Hibiscus Gose

Our rendition of this singular style–long neglected but now resurgent–is based on the pleasantly sour, slightly salty wheat beers from Leipzig, Germany, uber popular in the 1800s. An enchanting introduction to sours, Hibiscus Gose sees coriander and sea salt during the boil. Dried hibiscus flowers are then steeped in the beer to create a vibrant pink hue (really–it’s pink!)

3.5 Draft. Rose-amber beer with a cream head. Tart and light hibiscus aroma. Tart and light sour flavor with light hibiscus. Medium bodied. Tartness and light sourness lingers with light salt and light fruitiness.
3.6 Pours golden with a pinkish hue and head. Light lemony aroma. Lightly tart and refreshing. Notes: on tap at the tap room, Aug ’17
3.1 Taste: tropical fruit, hibiscus floral notes, coriander, semi sweet/sour, and may have a bit salt in finish. Nose is floral and mellow. Amber/Peach hue, mostly clear, tall head with nice tight bubbles in the foam. Medium/lite body.
2.6 Sampled on draft at Hugo’s this beer poured a light pink color with a small foamy white head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was tart, citric and dry. The flavor was tart, bitter, dryish and herbal with citrus and a bit of astringency. Long citric finish. Medium body. Disappointing.
3.7 From tap @ ADT. Pours clear reddish-gold with a thin off-pink head. Nice sour nose with fruit and spice. Flavors are tart and juicy with light sour and light salt. Plenty of carbonation. Punches above its weight.
3.4 Bottle. Poured a rose wine in the body that was mostly clear, with a small white head, average retention. Faint floral notes on the aroma and salt. Taste is mildly salty, again faint floral notes. Medium thin body with good carbonation. Easy to drink and refreshing.
3.2 Bottle sampled in a glass, this beer was a clear gold in the glass with a faint red hue, the pour gave a white and faint off-white cover, some nice lacing, the aromas were wheat, faint berry fruit with a floral note (hibiscus), light wheat/malt with a bread note, malt and fruit sweetness, there was a salt-wheat aspect to the nose, it had a light flavor of sour fruit, a hint of raspberry, light wheat, a little fruit like sweetness, there was a sourness at the finish to give some dryness on the tongue, the mouth feel was light, it had soft to average carbonation and it had a bit of creamy feel on the lips, the nose reminded me of a fruit ale, the flavor a light sour fruit beer, it was an ok drink.
3.1 12oz bottle to tulip. Pours clear peach, dissipating head. Aroma of floral, orange, apricot, cardboard. Taste of same. Slightly tart, moslty sweet, with moderate spice and salt finish. Nice representation of flowers. Wish it were more sour and salty.
3.1 clear, light amber color with a quickly dissipating head; salty, slightly sour aroma; a light, delicate beer; light sour fruit notes with hints of spice and floral notes; dry finish with hints of salt
1.8 F. Pours a clear golden color with white head. One of the more sour beers I’ve had. Undrinkable
3.5 Bottle from Beers of the World. Aroma of coriander, hibiscus, citrus. Tart with some salt.
3.2 12-oz. Pours a clear pale garnet with a loose and sudsy off-white head that goes away. Mild rose hip and vitamin nose, with faint red wine vinegar. Watery light body. Minimal carb. Vitamins, rose hips, red wine vinegar, and a tiny bit of lemon on the palate. Mild finish. Understated and undercarbed, though otherwise well made.
3.6 Pours a pale grapefruit pink without much of a foam head. Aroma is floral, hibiscus, and mineral. Flavor is tart fruit, hibiscus, and salt. crisp and well-carbonated. Very nice.
3.4 ours a hazy pink color with a thin creamy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of doughy, bready malt, tart berries, a mild bit of brine. The taste is tart berries, cherries, cranberries, pale malt, salty finish. Medium bodied, bright, good balance
4.1 from a fresh 12 oz bottle: aroma - floral hibiscus up front and center, hay and light bready malts, salt with hint of coriander. appearance - deep gold/pale amber with a reddish tint, a 1/2" white head with low retention. perfectly clear. taste - just a bit tart not quite sour. the flowery hibiscus flavor combines well with the mild bitterness, which stays at the palate, the saltiness and the spices. palate - medium light body, but with a substantial, almost rich texture. lively carbonation and slight astringency. finishes long, tangy and smooth with persistent saltiness. overall - refreshing and light as a good gose should be. the hibiscus gives it its own identity and makes it more interesting that a straight gose.
3.3 Golden peach with thin white head. Floral aroma (hibiscus) with peach and honey. Flavor is a bit tart with berries, peach and honey. Kinda mead-like.
3.0 12oz bottle. Minimal off-white head atop crystal clear amber body. Aroma is medium sweet, flowery, some lemon sour, orange, light salt. Taste is medium sweet, lemon, some salt, light orange. Light-medium body, light effervescence.
4.0 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/13/2017. Pours slightly hazy pinkish golden/orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big lightly tart lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, pear, green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, cracker, herbal, floral, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, hibiscus, spices, and light-moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, pear, green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, cracker, herbal, floral, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate hibiscus/lactic tartness and light coriander spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, cherry, strawberry, pear. green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, cracker, herbal, floral, grass, light lacto funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, hibiscus, spices, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness balance; and zero puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from tart/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately bready/grainy/acidic, and fairly saline balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is a great gose! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, hibiscus, spices, and light-moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the mellow tartness/acidity. A very classic tasting take on the style; outstanding balance between all flavors. A really delicious offering.
3.4 Rosy pink, clear, color. Nice blend of sour and salt. Coriander taste is muted. I don’t catch the hibiscus.
3.1 Funky barnyard fruit and citrus on the nose. Nice redish orange color with a huge white head. Not a sour fan, so here goes. Sour up front...grapefruit mixed in. Slightly watery. Refreshing but one is enough for me.
3.3 Draught @ BeerTemple, Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 250, Amsterdam, Netherlands 1012 RR. [ As Boulevard Hibiscus Gose ]. 3.4 Tap at Stadsbrouwhuis. Slight hazy golden with white head. Light sweet malts, lactic notes, maybe some hibiscus though I don’t really know what that would taste like. Soft caramel sweetness and light lactic sourness. Under medium bodied. Decent stuff.
3.9 Tap; pours clear gold with a white head; floral aroma with some citrus and salt; taste is mildly tart with some citrus, salt, and floral notes; finish is dry and tart; solid sour

3.4 Bottle sample at a tasting at troubles’s place. Thanks troubles. Clear gold with a white head. Sweet and lightly floral with notes of watermelon in the nose, sour, tarty, a little citrus taste. Light body, fizzy, tarty and slightly salty finish.
3.9 From draft, poured a hazy light yellow colour with a white head. Nose of lactic tartness, yoghurt, salty, orange, crackers, fresh citrus, refreshing light tart finish. Nice
3.7 Lightly hazed, pink grapefruit color and light pink head. Light floral and acetic nose. Light honey, pale malt, rose petals, raspberries, and just a hint of sea salt. A bit too much berry, but a pleasant surprise. 10/14
3.2 Bottle:   Pinkish hue pour, thin sudsy white head, spotty lacing.   A bit of a floral nose, hibiscus, rose petals.   Up front its a touch floral, soft sweetness, with a background that turns tart and then dry.   Not a traditional Gose, but fairly interesting.   Background gets a little wheaty and mealy.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Soft mealy dry finish.   Tart too.   Decent, but it gets a bit too mealy as it warms up.   Entertaining at least.
3.6 Draft... Clear ros-colored pour with a fleeting white head. The nose is grainy, dusty and slightly herbal. Medium-bodied with a mildly creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. The flavor is lightly tart and mildly fruity with a tiny pinch of salt. Finishes crisp, tangy and refreshing.
