Boulevard Love Child No. 3

Boulevard Love Child No. 3

Boulevard’s Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don’t we all?

Oak barrels were used to age the majority of beer used for Love Child No. 3—with beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years. Another portion of the beer spent 11 months in stainless tanks, souring on Lactobacillus. While very tart, the sourness is short-lived and the beer finishes dry with a trace of oak.

4.2 From notes. Finally found the long-lost notebook from the 4 Elf Party at Dark Horse on December 13! So, that’s where this was found. Shared by Haley as I was wandering through the crowd. The pour is a dark reddish ambery color with a quick fading white head, lingering just a collar. No real lace here on it. The aroma is nice and tart with some beautiful sharp fruits. Cherry, grape and orange are real prominent. The taste is pretty sharp and tart cherry with a good orange peel thing going on. There isn’t a great complexity to it as I’ve had with some good sours, but I’m not going to complain. The mouth feel is pretty damn good with a nice subtle carbonation and a lingeringly sour tart finish. Not too bad, but I’ve had better!
3.1 Pours a hazy brown body with a thin head. Unpleasent aroma. Nice sour taste.
4.3 Tart funky lacto and brett. Wild fruit and oak lingers on the palate. Probably better than batch 2 even
3.1 750ml bottle bought a while ago at Vinmonopolet Vika. Shared with Finn. Hazy apricot coloured body under a fair white lacing-head. Lemony tart aroma. Taste of oak, earth and ripe fruits with lemon up front. Tart fruity edge to the finish. Soft in the mouth. Refreshing palate cleanser (Tromsø 11.02.2015).
3.4 Flaske 750ml spandert av Rune. Delt med ham på Nerstranda 11 Feb 15. Gylden rødbrun. Uklar. Lavt skum. Tynn lacing. Aroma av syrlig frukt. Smaken skarpt syrlig med spor av aprikos.
3.7 Pours amber with thin quickly disappearing head. Very sweet and tart with citrusy cherry flavors.
3.9 Sampled at an ESBLS. Light hazy brown with minimal head. A sweet vinous aroma. Very tart fruit flavors. Cherries bring lots of it. Big malts, too. Wood, bark, etc. Very sweet but with that tartness. Interesting and tasty.
4.2 750 mL bottle pour split. Pours a dark reddish orange color with a quick fading head. Sour dark fruit, and slight bourbon aroma. Flavor is tart up front with some sweet fruit flavors and a nice balance of bold bourbon almost hidden in the background. Very sour beer. Delicious, solid sour here. Love it.
4.2 Bottle pour split at home, bought this beer for a friend for picking me up some Fremont KDS, with KDS being as good as it is I’d say this beer is pretty close, from the sour catagorie side. Dark Amber pour, thin head. Strong sour tast to start, then smooths out with a little of the oke barrel tast coming through. Really good sour.
3.7 Bottle shared by DrewFace. Nose is full of fruit especially cherry. Light wordiness. Slightly hazy reddish color pour. Taste is initially puckering with a drying sensation. Pretty tasty.
4.1 Really solid sour. Great balance of fruit and sour and the brown ale isn’t bitter but complements it nicely. Just delightful all around.
4.1 Bottle to goblet Cherry, blood orange, toffee, grape. Cloudy amber, thin creamy tan head. Taste is orange rind, red wine.
3.8 Bottle. Burgundy pour with light white head. Aroma is sour tartness, leather, oak, and funk. Taste is mild funk up front, followed light sweetness, ketchup oak, finishes with a bit of oak and some funk. Really nice.
4.1 Bottle shared. Amber and light hazy appearance. Sour, tart and dank with notes of funky yeast, fruit and light oak. Nicely done, this one has aged well.
4.2 "Pretty aggressively sour, even cutting through the bourbon, which is also more than adequate. This is an in your face beer, but with subtleties and a ton going on nonetheless. Acidic in feel, and a bigger beer abv wise. Lemony sour and bourbon play nicely together. Definitely a memorable one. I’d get this again too, though it was pretty expensive."
3.2 Bottle 75 cl at Sweet & Sour, Sätila, 2014-08-30. Thanks to tkrjukoff! Hazy amber to light brown color, small yellow head. Acidic, currants, vinegar scent, some cinnamon. Light acidic at first, goes a bit sour, some vinegar, berry taste. Sort of fizzy mouthfeel, very low bitterness.

4.2 Bottle. Hazy red/brown body with a medium offwhite head. Aroma of cranberries, raisin, vinegar, light tartness. Taste on the more sour side with an acidic cherry and cranberry taste, mild vanilla, with a prominent bourbon touch in the finish. Getting better and better down the bottle, this is a very nice yet mild sour.
3.9 Lovely amber color with an off white head. Fresh inviting aroma. Mellow fresh sour berry fruity. Even my friend who actually not buy beer like this says: nice. Fine body and a fresh carbonation. Fine sourness together with a balanced sweetness. Balanced and nice flavor. Tasty and powerful sour fruity. Also mild vinegar, some oak and some vanilla. Complex lovely ale. [Bottle from a trade inbreak]

4.3 The American wild ale movement just keeps getting more and more sophisticated. This one blends barnyard and sour flavors as masterfully as the best Belgian red/browns. Great use of different yeast strains as well as the technique of blending different barrels. Unusually high ABV for the style, but you would hardly know it.
3.8 Bottle courtesy of larsniclas. pours hazy brownish red with rather thin creamy reddish offwhite head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sour and slightly malty with dark bread, tart raspberries, moist buttery wood, leather, red wine vinegar, blackberries, toasted coconut and moist soil.
