Boulevard’s Love Child Series of "wild" ales are barrel-aged with such boisterous cultures as Lactobaccillus and Brettanomyces. These wayward offspring can prove so complex that we employ gauges on the label to convey the intensity of three key personality traits, Funk, Sour, and Fruit, presenting a picture of the ale at the time it was released. It will change as it ages, but don’t we all?
Oak barrels were used to age the majority of beer used for Love Child No. 3—with beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years. Another portion of the beer spent 11 months in stainless tanks, souring on Lactobacillus. While very tart, the sourness is short-lived and the beer finishes dry with a trace of oak.

4.3750 mL bottle shared in line at 4 Elf. The pour is a murky reddish brown with a nice tan head and lace. The aroma is huge cherry. There is a little barrel to it, and a crisp tart sourness. The flavor is really nice and tart cherry skins. There is a good barrel and a nice sourness. The mouth feel is light and crisp with cherry skins and a light funk. Carbonation is well done and the carbonation is lacking. Good beer
4.1750ml bomber best by 3-2016: This one ours a murky amber color. There was a good sized off-white head that dropped off to nothing rather quickly. No lacing. Interesting aroma. Some funk, a bit of red wine, some oak, maybe a touch of apple cider. The taste is good. Definitely tart and sour. Perhaps noted of strawberries and cherries. A touch of the oakiness. Alcohol is hidden completely. Surprisingly none of the whiskey barrels have imparted a noticeable flavor. Very nice.
3.5Bottle at home with friends. Pour is hazy Amber with a small white head and decent lacing. Lemony, green apples, some biscuit, bready, lightly spicy, and pears In the aroma. Big sour apples, lemon juice, oaky, light spice, pears, and acid with a huge sour finish. Medium body with high cabronation. Ok, but more sour than I prefer.
3.7No retention and no lacing. Smells of sour berries, vanilla and oak. Tastes of sour fruits, vinegar, vanilla and oak. Real sour aftertaste that gets more sour tasting the longer you drink it.
4.4Appearance: cloudy orange brown with white head
Aroma: Funky fruity with whiskey barrel
Taste: Rye whiskey meets a vinegary sour punch with orange peel and pineapple
Overall: if you are fan of whiskey barrel beer and a sour lover than you will really enjoy this marriage
3.92013 bottle I believe. Pours a murky dark orange color with a small film of off white head. The aroma has notes of tart red berries, big oaky vanilla, some sweet malts in there. Very vinous. Flavour goes along with notes of red berries, tart green apples, cherries, big oak barrel character, vanilla, bourbon, bit of marzipan, also here, very vinous, getting some maltiness aswell. Very round and complex flavour. Not a whole lot of carbonation, medium body, quite oily texture and a dry finish. Really nice stuff!

4.2750ml bottle pours a brown color with a bit of head. Nice balance of mild sourness with oak and malt. A hint of flavor found in the best lambics.
4.0June 19, 2015 - bottle from somewhere. Light brown pour with limited head. Nicely balanced with the bourbon, sour and fruit.
3.6Vegetal nose of star fruit and tomato. Clear copper, medium yellow head. Tart currant. Medium body, soft carbonation.
4.1750 ml bottle from Systembolaget. Hazy amber, white head that sink fast. Aroma, fermented red apples, funk and lemon. The taste is sour, red currants, sour fruit, grapes, oak casks, bourbon. Long sur lovely Aftertaste.
3.4Pours a clear, red-brown glowing color, with a small, dense head.
Smells of balsamic glue, topped by yogurt and peas. The aromas come well together, thanks to the wooden barrel, apple peel and a whiff of sour lemonade, together with a high acidity and sweeter honey. This promises to be a very sour beer.
Has a well fitting medium carbonation with a slightly metallic touch to it, among a medium body.
Tastes of an uncompromising bitterness, built out of funky bretts, old creamy cheese, glue, fermented milk and young apple rind. Its wooden, leathery malts build the balancing foundation of this beer, while they exhibit just enough balance to handle the tart onslaught. Its apple sourness matures during the finish, adding a ripe, sweeter fruitiness to them, while the brew remains its acidic tartness.
While the beer is indeed utmost acidic and sour, it features a decent range of flavors, finishing with a well fitting malt sweetness. A straight forward sour, struggling with not becoming too one-dimensional, due to its dominant sourness, threatening to swallow all other flavors.
3.8Bottle. Pours crystal clear burnt umber/orange, medium white head, dissipates fairly slowly, good lacing. Aroma is oak, lemon, light funk. Flavor is medium tart, oaky, caramel, lemon, light funk, some whiskey. Light plus body.
3.3Bottle, shared with the cool people at 3 Fonteinen. This beer pours reddish ruby with a nice steady light beige head. Nice sweet sour cherry notes, apple vinegar. Medium body and an immediate attack of apple sourness. Taste is tart joghurt and rhubarb sourness.
4.6750 ml corked and caged bottle. Aroma is vinegar, lemon, seedy dark berries. Pours hazy dark amber with a medium beige head with good retention. Taste is mouth-puckering sour (10/10 on a sour sale), lots of acidity, with lemon and seedy berry flavors along with a medium oak presence. Carbonation is restrained and average (not too foamy). Delicious!
3.0750 ml bottle. Clear Amber color with no head. Aroma is apple cider vinegar and traces of sour plums.
The flavor shows tart lemons, again vinegar and a big lacto notes in the back end. Secondary flavors of cherry and mild oak. I’m glad I didn’t buy this bottle because honestly it everything about a sour ale that I dislike. Rather tart with strong notes of vinegar. Really just not my thing.
3.9Strong aroma of fruit, funk, oak and alcohol. Nice color and lacing with a medium body. Big flavor matching the aroma with the alcohol coming out. Another winner.
3.8A winner. The fruit in the nose is immediately overwhelmed by the tart funk. The taste is the reverse, the big tart funk up front mellows into soft fruit and a dry finish. nice.
3.9Some floral aromas, a little nutty, some caramel, red berries, tart apple, lemon. Hazy red with a fairly lasting small, white head. Dry, stingingly tart, acidic. Light-medium bodied.
4.2Moved in!! Pours out a moderate ruby red color with a small off white head. Aroma is of sweet/tart berries, some sweet fruits, light floral notes, funky tartness, light barrel. Taste is complex fruity berries, floral notes, mild tartness, grape, wine barrel, earthy oak,. Tartness is there and never over the top. Really nice beer.
3.5Pours medium Amber, mild funk nose, solid acid and sour from beginning to end. Some oak, underlying sweet. Acid burn lingers long after finish. Break out dem tums.
4.0750ml bottle thanks to GrandaddyKC
Pours hazy red/amber with a small beige head, some lacing. Aroma is woody, tart, berries and vanilla. Taste is tart, oak, grapes, fruity with a sharp dryness
Very nice
3.3Den andra i Boulevards Love child-serie jag har smakat. Bärnsten med inslag av orange och rött. Minimal skumslöja. Syrlig doft av citrus och grape. Hittar ingen brett i doften.
3.2Shared large bottle poured with ahazy amber body and a semi-durable head.
Quite sour and lightly funky. Way more wood (barrel) effect than whisky.
3.9Corked and caged 750 ml bottle from Tipples. Pours deep reddish orange color with a nice fluffy off white head. Aroma is muted with some metallic and cardboard notes, oak, some light sour funk, sweet fruit and a vinous presence. Flavor follows as a beautiful combination of sweet fruit, red wine, sour lacto, dry oak. Wow this is really nice. No sign of the whiskey here, but I am OK with that. The wine barrel and sour notes really take over. Medium heavy body, medium plus carbonation. Really nice beer overall.
3.9Bottle 750ml @ Christianssand Brygghus, Kristiansand
Pours clear deep amber with a small off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, red berries, vinegar, dried fruits, funk and hint of alcohol and oak. Taste is light sweet, light bitter and medium sour with a long slightly warm, sour, berry fruity finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is sllightly fizzy
3.8Bottle, 75cl corked, at Christianssand Brygghus. A clear one, amber in color, with a small, dense off-white head. The aroma is very fruity, with red berries, some caramel malts and vinegar. Hints of alcohol both in the aroma and the flavor. Berries, some almonds and dried apricots, a funky touch and some vinegar. It’s more or less full bodied, with a soft carbonation, quite dry, lightly tart. Lasting fruity finish. A very pleasant one, refreshing and tasteful, although I prefer the aroma over the flavor. Just slightly though. 150328
4.0Bottle. Rich amber beer with a dark cream head. Tart and dark fruit aroma with light wine and light oak. Sour and light acetic notes with wine and lemon. Medium bodied. Sour and light acetic notes linger with wine and lemon.
4.3Pours a hazy blood orange color with a foamy tan head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of sour cherries, horse blanket, apricot, and strawberries. The flavor is tart cherry and a lot of sourness up front with a long, dry and oaky finish over a medium body.
2.3Pours dark golden. Exciting fruit and berry aroma. Unfortunately the taste is way too sour for me, like drinking lemon juice...
