Rye on Rye begins life as a brawny, tawny rye ale before being aged in freshly-emptied Templeton Rye barrels. Deep amber in color, this celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey features notes of charred oak, vanilla and a delightful boozy sweetness.
3.9Bottle from LCBO pours a clear tawny coat. What a nice brew, unabashed rye richness in the base Ale topped with gently boozy texture from the barrel, and there is some oak barrel here. I feel this could use ageing to explore the complexities and tone back the figgy– toffee-vanilla richness.
3.6Brown pour, smaller head, dissipates fast. Aroma of cola, rye, raisin, caramel. Prominent rye barrel taste, fairly sweet, dark caramel, raisin, light woodiness. Medium body.
3.7Bottle now listed at 12.9%. Best by Feb 10, 2021. $5.39 bottle, TWSP. Pours clear brown with a small beige head. Aroma is whiskey, rye, caramel, cola. Flavor is whiskey, cola, wood, caramel, booze. Nice.
3.9Pours a dark copper with a white foam head that slowly dissipates to nothing. Aroma is sweet toffee, caramel, banana, spicy rye, vanilla, and whiskey. Flavor is sweet toffee, caramel, vanilla, and some spicy rye. Full-bodied and smooth. Good stuff.
2.9Bottle of #6 from Horse Brass. Does it HAVE to be so sweet, like liquid brown sugar, yeah I sense the alcohol but not much more can get through. Fuller malt aroma—toffee, molasses, alcohol, some distant bitter note., serious reddish brown with thin whitish head. Sweet cloying finish. Have had some excellent boulevard's but a couple not so.
4.0rye whiskey with full body a bit of butter and nicely smooth. some caramel and light carbonation.
3.9On tap at Hogshead Tavern. Pours rubescent brown. Caramel, vanilla, pepper, sweet syrup, biscuit. Good body. Tasty.
4.2If you enjoy whiskey, you will love this beer. No chocolate or coffee, but easy to drink. And a good alcohol burn.
4.2Bottle, 2017 vintage. Sweet caramel malt aroma with notes of rye malt, bourbon, vanilla and oak. Pours opaque copper-caramel colored with a thin tan head that has decent retention and some lacing. Starts with sweet caramel malt and rye malt flavors. Finishes smooth with nice bourbon, vanilla and oak flavors as well as a little bit of warming booze. Nice strong ale.
3.9Holy shit that's good. You can taste the whiskey too. It's got this great bread dipped in egg taste.
3.5Draft at Barrelman's Room.
Cloudy reddish brown color. Thin ring of foam in my 5 oz. glass. Smell has alcohol and a bit of rye spice, but is hard to pick out.
Taste is pretty smooth and thick. I get an initial note of cinnamon, then a slight rye whiskey sensation. It is kind of like a less strong Templeton Rye, same viscosity, but not as alcoholic or “>Choke!< >Gasp!< SMO-O-OTH!”. Nice, but I’ve gotta say, not an OhmyGod beer. Meaning the alcohol will likely catch up to me if I have more than this 5 oz. taster. Some vanilla after a few sips, and an oaky sensation.
3.612oz bottle pours semi clear dark reddish brown with medium tan head. Nose and taste are malt heavy, sweet caramel, charred dark fruits, grain, bread, crust, leather, bitter cherry, oak. Finishes sweet with lingering malty cherry oak.
3.8Amber brown pour with a thin off white ring of head and light sticky lacing ..... aroma of spicy rye, caramel malts, vanilla, sugar plums, boozy whiskey and brown sugar ... taste is of spicy rye, caramel malts, vanilla, sugar plums, toasted malts, warming whiskey, brown sugar and dry oak ..... lingering sweetness and spicy rye in the finish along with dry oak, and vanilla .... abv hidden well for 12% ...bit sweeter than I’d like in my opinion but good rye whiskey flavors that linger for a bit
3.3One big rye short of its bigger, better brother. Not much for the nose or the taste buds. Plain ok.
3.3Pours dark murky copper with a tan head. Aroma of brown sugar. Immediate taste of malty rye whiskey sweetness. From bushes with a alcohol lingering. I appreciate the effort but it was too much to finish the glass.

3.7Draught. Pours a murky dark red with a quickly fading light beige bubbly head. Aroma is of dark fruits, plum, sherry, rye, bourbon. Taste is of caramel, plum, dark fruits, brown sugar, rye, cinnamon. Sticky, light oily mouthfeel, soft to medium carbonation.
4.0It pours amber with some orange hues. The head is a very light brown. Head retention is low. The first aroma impression is that of high levels of rye and rye whiskey. There are also aromas of cherries and low bread in the background. There are very low hints of other dark fruits that are distinguishable. The flavors are high in rye with a good dose of whiskey and alcohol. There are cherries that are in the background with maybe a small hint of blackberries. There is also a bit of spice. It has a full body with smooth alcohol warming. It is moderately bitter with a hint of sweetness in the finish. Overall, this beer is excellent especially if you love rye.
3.5Pours copper bronze with a billowy head and huge boozy, oaky, vanilla, bourbon nose; nice smooth palate with a edgy alcoholic burn to the finish. Nice.
3.9Pours a clear dark amber with a slight off white head which is gone quickly......aroma of rum, brown sugar.....taste is booze, then booze, then dried figs, slight rye grain spiciness near the end, quite dry with mild bitterness. Interesting item, I may have another as I'm not driving.
1.3Draft sample. 12.0 ABV and 47 IBU. Clear amber color with a small off-white head. Nose of heavy whiskey. Taste follows the nose. Way too strong alcohol and whiskey flavors. No beer flavor here. At least it's smooth. Tick.
3.8Thick rye aroma, strong bready taste with a bitter kick, lots of cherry cedars after notes. if you like rye beers, you'll like this one, bottle.
3.312oz bottle from Three Cellars in the Falls. When in St Louis, why not try a Boulevard ... even if bought out of state. Unclear amber brown pour with a beige head leaving little lace. Aroma has sweet and rye malts, a touch of fruit and booze. Taste is of sweet whiskey, rye malt with some toffee. Medium to full bodied, the blend is fine, and this is boozy. Finishes sweet with whiskey. The whiskey is fine, but a bit one dimensional. Would have liked a stronger rye graininess in the mix. 13.5
3.7Taste: smooth smoked rye, woody, slight whiskey booze bite. Wood barrel nose. Brown hue, slight opaque, tan head with rings of lace. Medium/full body. I had the 2018 Vintage and it sneaks up on you.
3.712oz bottle. Pours copper-caramel with a small beige head. Aroma is rye spice, boozy whiskey, caramel, brown sugar, light oak, and just a tiny bit of apple. Taste is fruit (sort of like a less sweet fig), whiskey, spice, caramel, toast, some oak, a tiny bit of toffee, a little brown sugar, and light red wine notes (dessert wine). Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Creamy and slightly sticky mouthfeel. You can feel the alcohol, but for 12% it isn't overly boozy. Sort of like an American barley wine version of De Struise Tsjeeses.
4.5On tap at The Ginger Man, the famed beer shrine, in New York City. Pours clear copper-amber with a trace of creamy off-white head and lacing. Aroma: brown sugar, pepper, plums and peaches.. Flavor: light brown sugar, butterscotch, wood, pepper, toasted rye bread with maple butter. Mouthfeel: full-bodied, slightly creamy, lingering warming booziness.
3.8On tap at HomebrewStuff. Cloudy medium brown with a slight reddish hue. Thin but dense and lasting beige head and even sheets of lacing. Toasted malt dark caramel flavors. Some of the sharp rye bite. Some mellow brown sugar sweetness as well. Tastes like it’s been sitting in a cool basement for a long time.
3.3Pours clear mahogany, almost cherry, with a thick and fairly persistent buff head. Aroma delivers caramel, toasted malt, woody, and subtle bready notes. Flavor gives a surprisingly strong boozy note, more what one would expect from a barleywine. Woody, caramel, whisky and toasted malt notes continue to play their part. Mouthfeel offers firm, smooth body and OK fizz. Get your rye on - rye.
4.0Great rye flavor for an American strong ale. Also good rye Aroma with a little bit of booze and malt. Flavor is like nose although the sweetness is overpowering. Thankfully there is enough carbonation to help balance. Body is decent but the finish is hampered a touch by the sweetness. The booziness is present throughout.
