Boulevard / Sierra Nevada Terra Incognita (Batch 1 & 2)
Situated at opposite ends of the California Trail, pioneering breweries Sierra Nevada and Boulevard have embarked upon a journey into the unknown, to a land where adventures in brewing and flavor await. Terra Incognita is, fittingly, an earthy beer, celebrating the unique terroir of the two locations. Beginning with Sierra Nevada’s estate-grown pale malt, and combined with amber malt, wheat, and malted wheat, it is then assertively hopped with Bravo and Styrian Goldings, dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings, and finally barrel aged with Brettanomyces in Missouri oak.
Originally brewed at Boulevard and released exclusively on draft at SAVOR Fest 2012. Batch 2 was brewed at Boulevard and re-released to the general public in bottles on 6-18-13.

3.6Bottle@Yespr’s - dark brown beige head. Aroma and taste is medium sour fruity, sweet malty, bourbon infused wooden notes forwards the finish.
3.5clear dark red, smooth offhite head.
aroma is flowery, sweet malty, nice balancing floewry hops, flavor is wood, flowers, yeasts.
3.875 cl, bottle. Dark brown colour with an off-white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, hops, spice, yeast and brettanomyces.
3.9Got in 11/2014. Aged at 55 degrees until 6/4/2015. Pours dark with light lacy head. Lighter carbonation. Nice light fruit with some biscuit flavor. Some raisin and wheat flavors. The hint of bourbon and wine barrel notes makes it a really nice finish. Wish I had more than one bottle.
3.3Batch 1 bottle. Pours a cloudy brown amber with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is funk, wood, dark fruit, and wheat. Medium mouth with sweet malt, raisin, light funk, good.
3.8Bottle. Highly carbonated, with two inches of sandy tan head. Deep chocolate brown hue. Smells like the inside of a stone church. Slightly musty, like granite. The flavor is similar -- minerally, with a slight funk. Maybe a little too subtle.
3.9This beer pours a dark amber color with a medium thick light beige head that diminishes gradually. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of oak, vine fruits and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of mildly funky fruit, vinous oak, earthy malt and mild hops. The finish is dark fruits and oak with a funky yeast aftertaste. Pretty good all around.
3.7Bottle. Pours almost black with a small, slightly off white head. Aroma is of chocolate, molasses, dates, sap, some woody barrel, light funky notes. Taste has lots going on, caramel, chocolate, soil, barrel, wood, light boozy notes, dried fruits, subtle funky almost plastic brett notes. Aroma was eh, but the taste more than makes up for that.
3.6Bottle, corked and caged, from Pear Delicatessen & Shoppe, Seattle
Dark brown color with generous compact head. The aroma is very bready, and moderately sour. Good body strength; the flavor is muddled, a bit funky and Bretty, too much wood, too much yeast.
Good, but very dirty.
3.4It poured a brown color with a big brown head. The aroma was of bourbon, chocolate, sugar, lemon and dried fruit. The taste was sour with notes of sugar, fruits, lemons and some barnyard. It had a medium body with medium to high carbonation. Tasty.
3.6750ml bottle in a teku. Pours dark brown with a big, lacy, beige head. Aroma of light Brett, some caramel malts with sort of a toasted note, light oak, hints of floral hops, and light notes of fruits. Flavor the same with a decent blend. Average texture, lots of carbonation. A decent beer, better than I expected, but still a little off.
3.5Brown pour, light tan head. Aroma has leather, funk, wet hay, ripe fruit. Flavor is leather, lightly tart, some funk and earthy/dusty flavors. Nice light sour. Cellared 1,5 year.
4.3The deep burgundy colored body was not highly carbonated, and the one finger thick head was short lived. The smell was very wine like, with sour, fruity, woody aromas dominating the nose, and this was backed by a rose like floral aromas. The taste was that of raisins up front, with a followup of cherry. There were some hints of chocolate and toffee in the finish. The aftertaste was oak, vanilla, and a touch of banana. The body of the beer was a little thin and the feel slick. A nice creation, but a bit pricey for the quality.
3.7Bottle (75cl) from Vinmonopolet, Oslo. Dark mahogany colour. Huge, light beige head, slowly cracking up, leaving thick lacing and a stable foam island. Aroma of malt, forest fruit, barnyard, almonds, bitter orange. Medium body, average/soft carbonation. Taste is malty-acidic, lightly tart, nicely balanced by a fruity sweetness, but appears somewhat restrained.
3.6Very dark hazy brown. Thin with no head. Sweet plummy berry aroma. Smooth full bodied fig, berry, wine flavors
5.0Love this style. Brown amber type of sour barn peach plum funk. Lightly carbonated, very vinous just a great wonderful flavored brew. Hop they make more collab stuff of the two breweries.
3.8Bottle - Soured dark malts with a hint of cherry. Dark jet brown with a light brown head. Light tart dark malts with some cherry notes and a dark burnt chocolate finish.
3.7750mL bottle, pours a deep dark amber with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out lots of brett, dark soured fruits, oak, and light vinegar. Flavour is quite complex, with the brett showcasing front and centre, oak barrels, dark soured fruits, and wood. Complex, woody, bretty and only light tart. Great stuff.
3.3Dark brown with a lot of carbonation and a thick slow fading pillowy head. Nose of bourbon, some vanilla, wet oak. Bitter dark roast malts and tart finish. Don’t think this is what it was supposed to be...
4.3dark brown color with a decent head; aroma is rather complex - mostly dark fruit and wine; complex, earthy flavor: dark fruit and caramel malts with notes of red wine and oak and maybe just hints of bourbon; well balanced; bitter, fruity finish
3.8Dark brown maybe some red in there. Tastes of red wine, cherry, dark fruit, very earthy hops, a little spice, darker malts and a little bread crust. Variety of hop flavors, citrus, earth, pine. Medium body. Very refreshing brew and very aromatic.
3.5Aroma of bourbon and alcohol, pours a dark brown with a short tan head. Phenolic slightly sour taste of spoiled fruit. Medium body with a sour finish.
3.1poured from a bottle. Medium caramel color, medium off white. Mild malt aroma. Medium body with a sweet tangy flavor and a medium finish.
3.3Poured from a bottle. Part of a blind taste test. Medium Brown color. Sweet aroma. Almost tangy. Kind of fruity.
4.6Sierra Nevada-Boulevard Terra Incognita 3 has a thin, beige head, a turbid, dark brown (think of prune juice) appearance, and little-to-no lacing left behind. The aroma is strong and bold- white wine, vanilla, sugar, brown bread, dark fruits, brown bread, and coconut. Taste is of all those elements, with shades of coffee, baker’s chocolate, bread crust, and shaved coconut. Bitterness is fairly low. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Sierra Nevada-Boulevard Terra Incognita 3 finishes on the dry side and surprisingly drinkable. RJT
4.0Bomber at a tailgate thanks to RespertFTW. Large head. Color of the blue solo cup. Tart root beer.
3.8Bottle, shared with Parksy, Grippitis, JJ. Muddy brown with a lively beige head. Heavy lactic-sourness aroma, a bit musty, underlying tart fruits. Flavours of raisins, cherries, yohurty sourness, seedy bitter finish. Yum!
3.1Pours brown with not much of a nose. Nutty taste - reminds me of a brown ale - with a slightly more complex finish of slight bourbon. Given how much I like Sierra Nevada, this one is a little disappointing.
3.4Dark brown to black with light tan head... Aroma of earth, light funk, nuts, light tartness... Flavor is earthy and grainy, light tartness and spiciness, bready and earthy finish... Interesting
2.8Bottle from Douglas. Thanks!
A: Dark mahogany color with a creme colored head. Lacing.
N: Grape, cocoa, tobacco, leather, grapefruit, acetone, toffee, and diacetyl.
T: Semi-tart, weird bittersweet mixture.
M: Creamy carbonation, medium mouthfeel.
O: Strange duck. This isn’t interesting, unless you feel like you should be picking out brewing flaws, and given the pedigree, it’s quite frankly disappointing.
