Boulevard Smokestack Series: Nommo Dubbel

Boulevard Smokestack Series: Nommo Dubbel

The Nommo are ancestral spirits worshipped by the Dogon tribe of the West African nation of Mali. The name is derived from a Dogon word meaning ‘to make one drink.’ No, really. Nommo, usually described as amphibious, hermaphroditic, fish-like creatures, were created by the sky god Amma, who caused them to multiply by splitting them into doubled sets of twins. Seeing a trend here? Maybe it’s farfetched, but we think the story of the Nommo makes this whole enterprise a little more fun and interesting.

Our Nommo has a brilliant deep amber color and a sweet caramel malt profile. This beer showcases the coriander, cinnamon, and star anise used in the kettle, complementing them with clove and banana notes contributed by the Belgian yeast. The rich complexity of Nommo’s flavor makes it a worthy partner to a variety of meats and game, as well as aged or aromatic cheeses.

3.6 750 ml bottle shared by Tmoney99 (2011 notes). Pours a lightly hazy caramel brown color with a large off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel, lightly toasted, mild spices, with dark fruit. Not overly complex, but worth trying.
3.9 Nice murky brown pour, little to no head. Slightly yeasty chunks. Nose is dark fruits, sweet malts, touch of booze. Great flavour sweet dried fruits, some booze really nicely balanced!
3.4 The appearance of this beer is a reddish orange color with a large off-white head and some fine-grain sediment throughout the liquid, and the aroma is reminiscent of sour fruit and yeast. The taste is mildly sour and slightly sweet, and the palate combines a medium body, average carbonation, slick texture, and a long finish.
3.7 Refrigerated corked and capped 75 cl brown bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours translucent dark amber with medium brown/reddish hues and medium fluffy beige head. Aroma is dark candy sugar, medium body, medium carbonation, and nice big bubble lacing. Taste is dark candy sugar spice (mostly cinnamon), a little anise, and some dark fruit. The spices don’t add anything positive from my perspective, I prefer several other dubbels.
2.9 Bottle. Pours a mostly clear very dark brown color with a moderate off-white head on it. Nose is somewhat sweet with elements of molasses to it and implies a rather sweet drink. Taste is fairly sweet, but not overly so. Slightly heavy and not overly drinkable, but passable.
3.4 mostly clear copper with an enormous off-white head. seriously enormous. be careful when you pour it. caramelized sugar, stone fruits, raisin, barnyard, spice. very sweet, light bitter. medium body, lively (nearly excessive) carb. honestly I tend to avoid belgian styles because they all seem to be way too carbonated and taste like theyll give me diabetes, but i could manage this one.
4.9 Not too subtle sweetness of this delightfully complex Dubbel brings thoughts of Stilton and grape pairing
3.2 If you’re unfortunate to get the bottom of the bottle, you’ll get a good glass full of yeast sediment that muddies up the beer. Otherwise, the beer is just medium/dark brown in color with a bright white head. My first thought upon smelling this… “steak sauce”. It smells so much like steak sauce that I can’t get it out of my head. Some earthiness, possibly wood, and strong cinnamon and cloves decorate a roasted, sweet, caramel-heavy malt bill. This is just as obvious in the aroma as it is in the flavor. This is a pretty heavily spiced beer, but still soft, and offers a potent experience without a heavy body. The relatively light weight of the beer, combined with the up-front, but still palatable spice presence, makes this pretty drinkable. Some yeast takes over in the finish. Otherwise, this is pretty enjoyable. Sweet, but not too sweet… spiced, but not too spiced.
3.8 aroma is big prunes, brown sugar. copious, mountainous head that refuses to recede. deep burnished ruby body, translucent but shadowed. flavor is pleasantly sweet but not cloying, luscious soft caramel, fluid and unrelenting. ABV buried without a trace besides the quickly warming sensation it provides. some hint of fusely booze plays with the deeply advanced sugars in later samples but remains pleasant. pit fruits - deeply developed apricots brushed with nearly soured balsamic and charred on the grill. wonderous.
3.2 750ml caged and corked bottle. Poured an amber color with an off white head. Aromas of toasted caramel, some spices, and a trace of dark fruits. Tastes of caramel, spices, dark fruits, and dried banana chips. Lively and somewhat over carbonated body.
3.9 Deep amber, white pancake head. Nose is dark fruit, spice and alcohol. Sweet on the tongue. Dates, caramel, and piney hops in the middle. Soft, creamy carbonated finish. Solid.
3.6 Bottle shared thanks to Tim and Rachel! Pours a hazy copper brown with thin tab bubbly head that doesn’t really stick. Aroma of Belgian yeast, sweet caramel, and dark fruity esters. Taste is mostly the yeast and esters with a hint of smokiness. Not too sweet like most dubbels, solid.
3.3 Thanks Tim and Rachel. Clear brown amber with off white head. Sweet caramel aroma. Sweet caramel effervescent slight yeast character.
3.6 A - Pours a brilliant reddish brown with a Terminator khaki head that will not die. S - Big spice aroma, banana bread crust, pears, golden raisins, muted brown sugar. T - Spicy right off the bat along with a bouquet of fruit - Plums, apples, pears, persimmons, bananas, and honey dew. Dry toasted malt stays in the background and finishes earthy and dry. M - Moderate carbonation, smooth and creamy, medium to full bodied. On the drier side for the style. The fruity yeast is the forerunner and almost drowns out the malt. Nice yeast profile and the dry finish is welcomed. Serving type: bottle 12-20-2011
4.2 Dark brown color with a thick tan head. Aroma is a little bready with notes of raisins and other dark fruit. Flavor is malty and thick with a pleasant sweetness. Just a touch of bitterness in the finish and a little rich, dark fruit in the aftertaste. Really nice. Wife: 4.6
3.5 Bland aroma leads to surprisingly complex taste. Heavy chocolate. Fizzy palate. Clean finishing.
3.5 Pours amber in color with frothy white head. Presence of cinnamon, cloves, and mild banana aroma with tastes of the same.
3.2 Pours a reddish brown with a decent tan head. Nut and caramel dominate the flavors but it falls a touch flat. Could use a bit more carbonation. Chewy grain malt flavors and mouthfeel.
3.5 Pours cloudy mahogany. Nice head and some lacing. Smells of molasses. Carbonation slightly below average, nice for style. Molasses smell increases as beer goes down. Finishes with light sweetness. Nice. Thanks to Steve for sharing.
3.5 Light brown and orange body with a big head. Cinnamon, herbal, and yeasty. Hits the style. Pleasant as not too sweet, making for drinkability. Medium plus mouthfeel, smooth.Stephen’s bottle.
3.7 Nice, cheap bottle from Sam’s, Durham. Faintly cloudy, deep brown pour with amber tints. Lively carbonation, fluffy head, soapy lacing. Nose is immediately appealing, with a little more thoughtfulness than the average dubbel, including not just Belgian yeast and nerts but ripe dough, figs, and a touch of toffee. Full and luxuriant mouthfeel, just enough carbonation to keep things lively. Fruity and malty enough to pass the style test, but what I enjoyed about the flavors was the addition of spicy and dry/hoppy notes that gave this a complexity and personality that I find lacking in lots of dubbels these days. Pretty good, especially at 7 bucks.
3.5 750ml bottle, caged & corked. Pours chestnut brown color, rust colored foam. Aroma of fermented molasses, distant spices, dark fruit. Dry body, molasses flavor, some dark fruit. Finishes with a spicy tingle. (3674)
3.8 Ruby red off white head. Aroma is creamy cinamon. Feel is creamy. Taste is mild cinamon. Rate d too many tonight.
2.4 Slightly hoppier than the norm. Slightly thin. It just doesn’t come together for me.
3.9 deep ruby pour with a 3+ off white finger head. light nose with spices and banana. med body with light oak, dark fruits, sugar and light spices. sweet finish with dark fruits and spices.
4.5 Dark burgundy-brown, good lacing. Juicy, winelike scent. Grape flavors. Juicy, sweet, and light caramel malts.
3.7 Draft at Jerry’s. Clear brown with decent, creamy, beige head / Nose of banana, chocolate, cinnamon, and other baking spice / Medium body, creamy, a touch thin with low carbonation, sweet but with good balance and lightly bitter finish / Flavors of banana, semisweet chocolate, cinnamon, clove, star anise / Nicely done, but has a dessert in a glass character which would make it difficult to have more than just one.
3.3 Aroma of dark pitted fruit and spices. Pours a deep amber with garnet highlights with a mostly diminishing tan head and no lacing. The taste is slightly sweet. Bananas, cloves, dark fruit, and cinnamon notes. Medium- light body with moderate carbonation. Light mouthfeel. Overall, enjoyable but on the light side for a Belgian Dubbel.
3.6 Sweet molasses aroma. Distinct banana, bubblegum, and toasted biscuit flavor. Finish is slightly tart.
3.3 It poured a reddish/brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of raisin, toffee and plums. The taste was of bread, nutty and fruity. An overall good beer.
