Boulevard Smokestack Series: Two Jokers Double-Wit

Boulevard Smokestack Series: Two Jokers Double-Wit

No. 8 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. "Double Witbier"

Conventional wisdom holds that there are two sides to every story. Though our new Two Jokers Double-Wit is hardly conventional, there are in fact two distinct pieces to its personality. On the one hand, it’s a revival of the classic Belgian “wit,” or “white” beer, a style dating back to the late 1800s. The use of lactic fermentation and ingredients like coriander and orange peel are hallmarks of the style, as are the cloudiness and the pale color that give the beer its name. On the other hand, it’s a modern, uniquely American specialty brew; big, flavorful, and spiced with cardamom, lavender, and grains of paradise. Two Jokers has a refreshing tartness, nicely balanced by a well rounded malt bill graced by notes of caramel. Belgian yeast brings floral aromas with hints of banana and clove, and a citrusy zing to the tongue. Two Jokers Double-Wit pairs well with the lighter fare of spring and summer, such as grilled fish or chicken, feta cheese, fresh garden salads, and fruit compotes.

3.6 Bottle (75 cl) from Systembolaget. Hazy deep golden with some floaters. Fruity and spicy aroma, some lime and lemon, a bit like sprite soda. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Semi dry, low bitterness.
3.9 This is a really nice strong witbier. Pours orange gold with a nice white head that leaves lacing. Aroma of orange peel, banana, bread, funky Belgian yeast. Very refreshing with the right amount of tartness. Nice sweet/sour flavor, very drinkable for the 8% abv. Would repeat.
3.8 March 6, 2015. Bottle at home, best by may 2015. Very light hazy dark golden with a medium sized small bubble head. Aroma is lots of citrus with lemon, lime and orange, also holds notes of coriander, lavender, floral honey. Taste is light tart, citrusy, light sweet, finish is very spicy with citrus, coriander and floral notes. Medium bodied, small bubble carbonation.
3.8 Lemon, lime, and tart persimmon aroma. Cloudy golden, medium head. Lime, and the suggestion of coriander. Medium body, tangy, easy carbonation. Very nicely done, tasty and refreshing, somewhat lacking in nuance. Paired extremely well with my avocado and cilantro burger.
4.1 On tap at Bier Station in Kansas City. Arrived in a tulip glass. A: Arrived a cloudy orange-gold, with a decent pale head that left some appreciable lacing. S: I was sitting right next to an open kitchen, so my sense of smell was a little muddled. However, citrus notes leap out of the glass with this beer, primarily orange, like walking through an orange grove a bit past harvest time. Some spice and herb notes are also present, though well below the citrus. T: See the description of the smell. This beer packs a serious orange-citrus punch, alongside a pronounced spicey-herbal presence. Orange juice and peel tastes abound, mixed with heavy coriander, lavender, and hints of white pepper. As the beer goes along, a slight touch of lactic sourness makes itself known around the edges of the citrus blast. M: Lively and sparkling, this has the right amount of carbonation sharpness to it. O: A very enjoyable experience, and the first Boulevard offering I’ve liked out of what I’ve tried. Had I been able to find a case of this, it would have come home with me.
3.4 Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Cloudy gold with a tall white head. Strongly spiced aroma with citrus, big wheat and yeast notes. Taste is sweet malt, wheat, candied fruit, spices, citrus zest and yeast. Body is medium with lots of prickly carbonation. Ends with more spices, candied fruit, toasted grains, sweet malt, yeast and citrus.
3.3 .75 bottle. Hazy yellow golden. Spicy nose- coriander, citrus lemons, malty yeast. Good bodied, wheaty, thick malty, lots of citrus again. Feels bit acidic, dry bitter. Almost a tripel, but too bitter lemony. -- bb
3.3 Bottled: Pours hazy golden with a thick head. Aroma is lemons, lime, corinder and wheat. Fat mouth feel. Sourish flavour with notes of coriander, lemons, wheat and some alcohol.
3.2 750 ml bottle. BB 02/2015. From a trade with jcnielsen. Thanks a lot Justin! Cloudy golden colour with a small white head. Really strong spicy aroma. The flavour is yeast, mild tartness, citrus and a lot of spices. Some alcohol there too. Too much spices for me. I like more traditional Witbier.
3.3 Medium sourness, lightly bitter, light sweetness, grass, citrus, light body, lively, long finish, pale, hazy, frothy. I think it’s a bit too sour for the style and that lingers a bit too long. The aroma is really striking, complex, yummy.
3.7 750 ml. Bottle pours a hazy golden color with a nice white head. Aromas of light citrus, coriander, spice. Light bodied, very good.
3.4 God för att vara en veteöl. Men jag gillar inte veteöl.
3.7 750 cc from Capone’s. Pours hazy golden with fizzy white head. Nose was limey citrus, hops, coriander. Tasted lightly yeasty, champagney, with heavy carbonation, notes of lime, citrus hops, and pale malt, and a crisp finish.
4.0 Pours a dark bronze color with a quick fading white head with no lacing to be seen. Aroma of citrus, funk, and banana. Taste is forward with a tart sour fruit followed by a nice sweetness that finishes clean and leaves a certain effervescence on the palate. Really enjoy this one
3.6 Pours cloudy golden amber with fairly tall frothy white head. Aroma of honey, wheat, light citrus, tropical fruit, light spices. Taste is lightly sour and funky up front, heavy with honey and citrus. Lightly sweet finish with lingering honey. Body is medium to rich with soft carbonation.
3.7 Appearance: Hazy yellow color with a nice white head that leaves a fine lacing. Aroma: Spruce, citrus and coriander. Palate: Medium + body. Moderate sweet and a mild bitterness. Average carbonation. Taste: Spruce, fruity, wheat, mild citric and some coriander. Overall impression: Nice refreshing and tasty Wit. Personal stats: Bottle from Systembolaget web order, Sweden
2.1 The double wit seemed a little too sour for my palate. If you like a sour beer this will make you happy.
3.5 Cloudy yellow with a thin white head. Aroma is mild coriander with hints of something similar to white wine. Flavor is mild spice with a bit of bready wheat. Finishes a bit dry with notes of white wine and a touch of anise. Wife: 3.6
4.1 Bright citrus and spicy aromas, floral. Hazy orange, fully lasting white head. Dry, fruity, spicy. Medium bodied.
4.0 Very light aroma with orange, and lemon notes jumping out, with some other spices in the background. Pours a clear light straw with a thin white head and very visible carbonation. There’s a lot going on in this beer, it starts with notes of lemon, which quickly changes over to lavender and cardamom. The alcohol is really well hidden, and the carbonation keeps the palate clear. This is an excellent beer.
3.6 Bottle to glass. Pours a cloudy yellow with a fluffy white head. Aroma was fruity, floral, and spicey. Taste was tons of spices, orange, lavender, coriander, and tart. A bit sour, but good. A bit too many spices for me, but not a bad beer at all.
3.7 Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. Pours cloudy blonde with an attractive white head and a floral fruity aroma. There is a fruity wheat an caramel flavor with finish of multiple spices. More like a mildly sour beer than a witbier. Pretty tasty though.
3.5 Sample at a Systembolaget tasting. Spicy and fruity smell with coriander and citrus. Similar taste. Fairly sweet. The taste and smell reminds me of "glögg", I wonder if they used similar spices.
2.9 Cloudy yellow with a foamy white head. Light lemon aroma. Hardly any carbonation and tiny body. Lemon peel finish.
4.1 Appearance is light golden, cloudy, with a thick white foam cap. Aroma is an amazing combination of citrus, coriander, and grass, with clove yeast phenols and a slight lactic funk. Taste is multi-layered starting with a rich malt sweetness, giving way to citrus flavors of lemon and grapefruit. There’s a slight hint of coriander and clove, and it finishes with a moderate lactic acidity and tartness that perfectly balances the malt sweetness. Mouthfeel is might to moderate with a bit of creaminess and a moderate carbonation. Finishes fairly dry with a nice acidic tartness that balances the malt. A lot going on here, and a great beer
