"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower, a cautionary tale. Our quadrupel ale is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the contents of each successive glass, they grow ever more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

3.3Bottle from Feb 2016, cellared for 3 years.
Attack: crisp-thicker heavy
Mids: brown sugar malt, boozy alcohol, lvl6-sweetness, caramel toffee malt, raisin
Finish: alcohol heat, persistent heaviness
Overall: Too alcohol forward for my taste. Decent malt flavour, but not quite rounded enough.
3.3Prune and cherry. Deep dark maroon with a small white head. Prune, earthy and cherry with a touch of booze and some pits in the finish.
4.1Aroma of belgian candy and spices. Big foamy head. Hazy dark raspberry colored. Taste wheat, belgian candy, malt, dark fruit, fluffy carbonation, holiday spices.
3.8Botella grande. Hazy amber brown colour, medium off-white head, steady, good lacing. Sweet aroma, lots of dark malts and caramel/brown sugar with dark fruits, yeast and alco notes. Good filling palate. Sweet flavour, dark malts, well toasted caramel / brown sugar, dark fruits, yeast with a good medium bitterness though rather covered up by the sweetness and along comes some alcohol (nicely warming).
3.8Pours mahogany color with small head and slight lacing. Malt and cereal notes with very slight sweetness. Malt front end and slight burn to cut through with a smooth bread like finish. Nice drinkable quad.
3.5Bottle. Medium copper color, cloudy. Spicy, sweet flavor. Very overcarbonated. Erupted out out of bottle when opened. Quite good. Does not taste as strong as it it.
3.7Bottle pour into tulip glass from Total Wine & More, Danvers. Appearance is gorgeous red-amber with tons of sparkle and lots of fine, white (and a few larger, dark) floaties--looks a bit like a snow globe--with finger-width beige head with good retention and trace lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel, candied sugar, fruit, alcohol. Taste is as aroma. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with frothy texture, fizzy carbonation (akin to champagne), pleasant alcohol warmth and dry, crisp finish. Overall, good representative of the style.
3.2Raisins, alcohol, spice. Not a beer style I'm really into but noticed I never rated one so I gave it a try. Ok, slight alcohol warming but hidden pretty well.
3.1Bottle (0.0075hl): A bit unclear, deep golden to light chestnut-amber coloured, small and stable off-white foamy layer, sweet - mainly - caramelly nose with certain traces of dried fruits and a very well hidden citrussy-hoppy touch; moderate to solid sweet and mildly bitter flavour, full - as expected- bodied, not overly soft; raisins and caramel in the slightly lingering sweet finish, some bitterness and a mild alcohol-burn in the aftertaste.Pretty well drinkable, but not a too complex Triple...
3.6Hazy dark amber, creamy beige head. Aroma has dried fruit, sugar, malt. Sweet flavour, malt, dark sugar, dried fruit. Slightly sticky with nice alc warmth.
5.0An american, copper, very foggy Abbey Quadrupel with very high, light brown head. Aroma is malt, caramel, prune, tabac, coffee, oak. Vineous. Taste is bitter sweet. Pearly.
3.5Hold it up to the light and you’ll see a gorgeous clear ruby liquid. Given the ABV, it is understandably rich and a little boozy. Taste reminds me a bit of cherry cordial, but in addition to cherry I get some prunes or other dark fruits. Rich malts, not too sweet. Maybe a hint of licorice at the end. Good, but not sure it all comes together.
3.1Pours a nice cooper color with a huge tan foamy head. Aroma is slight. Taste is smooth. The high alcohol content is well hidden. Hints of dark fruit, finishes nicely.
3.5Bottled 355ml from Beer & More, Brussels. Clouded brown to chestnut with beige head. I'd forgotten about this one, not sure if I bought it here or it was a gift, if so then thank you. There is a rich, malty, caramel character to this, really fairly sweet, boozy alcohol notes. Fruity, peachy hints with a pear note. Pretty reasonable.
3.8Pours a sort of purple color. Lots of floaties in there, lots of stuff in the bottom. Solid two fingers head, good retention, great lacing.
Aroma is dark fruits, cherry, alcohol. Sweet. Potent.
Taste is surprisingly sweet. I taste alcohol. Dark fruits, malty. Apple peel. A touch of funky yeast.
Mouthfeel is heavy and full bodied. Alcohol comes in on finish for sure, so it's burning going down.
Overall, this is quite good. It's a big beer, so I expect a lot. I would recommend it, and I would buy it again.
3.712 oz bottle. Pours a hazy nut brown. Scents of malt and yeast, plums and raisins. Surprisingly light tastes of dried fruits with a nice umami sour. Very lively fizzy moutfeel which is unexpected and a lingering alcohol heat that is nice. Good quad.
3.8Very good American imitation of a Belgian ale, but it is an imitation, to be sure. There are strong notes of roasted coffee that do not belong, and a lack of sweetness one would expect in an ale of this style. Still, it has a crisp finish, a creamy body and a head-banging hit of alcohol after even half a glass. A fine product for an American brewery, but still falls down compared to many European ales.
4.6We have this bottle at home in August 2018 it was a very nice quad. I especially like the creaminess and even though it is 10% it did not taste like too much alcohol
3.6750ml bottle at home. It pours a brown red with a yellow tan head, the aroma is sweet and malty. The flavor is sweet caramel with some nice Belgian yeast flavor. It is nice and smooth for being over 10%
3.7Pours dark, ruby amber with a one finger tan head with some reddish tints. Aroma is dried fruit, caramel and light Belgian yeast. Taste is light raisin and caramel, moving to roast, nuttiness and Belgian yeast. Finish is light bitterness. A good Quad.
4.57/6/18
Got at Total Wine today and had while watching Stripes.
Poured from bottle. Deep copper with a huge foamy head. Almost over-poured.
Smell is malty with dark fruit and spicy Belgian yeast.
Taste is tons of dark candied fruit and yeasty spice. Quite a bit of caramel/dark maltiness too with some light banana/bubblegum yeast flavors. Sweet with almost no bitterness. Tastes amazing!!
Big palate with tons of carbonation. Easy drinking for a 10% beer.
Overall, my first Quad and it’s awesome! Has the dark/candied fruit flavors of a dubbel with the lighter banana yeasty flavors of a tripel. This is an amazing beer!
3.5Less fruity than the bourbon barrel aged quad, this is less sweet as well. Still. A stlye thats lost its hold on mr.
4.6The body a cloudy appearance with some sediment and a light mahogany color. The head builds up quickly and fades slowly. The aroma has loads of classic Belgian ale yeast notes. The favor is full of layers of sweet malt, fruit like figs, dates and apricots and peach. The 10.5% is mellow and deceptive and it adds nice boozy notes and character. This is an excellent example of the style.
4.0355 ml bottle bought at Q Club in SoHo, Central.
Looks: Clear amber ruby colour with a cloud of dirty yeast particles; One finger head with off-white foam which lasts for 1 minute; Good sticky lacing with fizzy carbonation.
Aroma: Very fragrant and sweet full malt, with strong raisins and dark fruits, strong caramel, sticky toffee, floral, sugar, cloves, strong spices, bread, strong Bel yeast and light grass.
Taste: Strong sweet full malt, with strong caramel, toffee, strong alcohol, strong liquorices, dark fruits, floral, strong sugar, strong spices, herbs, bread, strong Bel yeast, lemon and mid to strong bitter grassy hops.
Body: Full body; Thick and slick palate.
Mouth Feel: Full maltyness in a thick background. Loads of tasty caramel and strong booze which hides the dark fruits. Flowery with strong but nice sweetness. Very spicy and herbal with expressive Bel yeast throughout. Lemon to round. Fantastic!
Alcohol: The 10.2% abv (yep, Westy scale) and accompanying liquorices are in-your-face, Gin-like and surprisingly pleasant all the way. Tasty, no warmth or knock-on. Great stuff!
Hoppiness: Floral, spices and light grass in nose. Herbs, floral, strong spices, lemon and grass in taste; Bitterness - hops and liquorices - is fairly strong for an abrupt, mid to high astringent sweet-bitter caramel malty finish.
After Taste: Slightly dry. Boozy spicy and bitter to mouth.
Comments: This one is nowhere near the hearty Sint Bernardus Abt 12, nor close to the silkiness of La Trappe Quadrupel, but on its own, it is simple but very tasty, with the big caramel maltyness, clever strong Bel yeast, strong but tasty Gin-booze and sweetness all fall into the right place. Charming and loveable. Recommended!
3.9Amber/bronze pour, off white head starts strong but retreats quickly. Nose is burnt caramel and dried fruit. Middle is currants, plums, caramel, medium kilned malt, and run soaked cherries. Finish is warm, little boozy, dark fruit. Dessert.
4.1Dark brown /redish color-hazy. Nice, big beige head.. Beautiful aroma of malt, brown sugar. Malty sweet taste, but in the very good way though. Some roasted nuts, figs and raisins. Medium to low carbonation - however beer was stored for some time. Very well balanced. Alcohol - extremly well hidden - apperce as nice warming feeling in the throagh. Very good beer.
3.7Pours a hazy reddish brown with a relatively creamy head that sticks around as a thin layer. Smell is candy sugar, belgian yeast, and dark fruit. Taste is expectedly sweet, but there's a bit of a white grape tang to it as well. The small amount of hops is dominated by the sweetness, but it provides a nice bite at the end.
3.6A dark and hazy amber pour with a nice head. Smells like candied sugar, alcohol, and dried fruits. The booze isn’t that well hidden on this one but the sweetness is balanced with some notes of dried fruits, a little spice, and a little bitterness.
3.6Et ganske godt øl, passer til det meste av mat. Også behagelig som tørstedrikk.
3.5I smell alcohol, ginger, pears & caramel. Thick, light golden head over clear golden amber—pretty. I taste confectioner’s sugar (one reason i usually avoid quads & such, but I enjoyed the last two boulevard smoke stacks I had), strawberry, alcohol (my digestive tract starting warming with the first sip) and maple. Sweet, boozy finish.
