Boulevard Whiskey Barrel Stout

Boulevard Whiskey Barrel Stout

Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks.

4.0 black color; great bourbon aroma with roasted malt; nice smooth, slightly sweet roasted malt flavor with great bourbon notes; oak comes through in a nice dry finish; warm, slightly boozy finish
4.1 Pours thick and rich. A very deep, dark brown with a nice head that builds from the bottom with large bubbles on top. Aroma of cherries and apricots. Very ripe. Some chocolate and vanilla as well. Rich and sweet in the mouth. Caramel, vanilla, and coffee. Pretty smooth in the mouth and no real noticeable alcohol coming through, other than a bit of a warm feeling on the way down, which is impressive for this beer. Good work on this one.
3.7 March Madness 2021 - A malty, smooth, strong stout. The whiskey barrel flavor is a bit strong.
3.6 Pours the color of oil with oil like viscosity and a compact short lived head; boozy vanilla and oak on the nose; complex, rich palate with a lingering burn in the finish.
3.8 45.5cl blik. Helder donker bruin kleur, fijne romige bruine schuimkraag. De geur is whisky en chocolade. Smaak is zoet, whisky, vanille, koffie en chocolade. Vol body en veel koolzuur.
4.5 Rated in November 2020 and now again in 2021; this is a composite review. 12-ounce bottle pours black with mahogany highlights when held up to bright light, along with a 1/2" creamy brown head and residual lacing. Aroma: dark dried fruits, chocolate-covered cherries, molasses. Flavor: prune juice, fig and date bars, raisin molasses bread, dark brown sugar, super ripe plums, dark chocolate, black coffee, well-roasted campfire marshmallows, burnt toast, wooden char, toasted coconut, vanilla beans, bourbon. Mouthfeel: full-bodied with an oily, yet velvety, finish.
3.1 Bottle. Really deep brown with hardly any head. Aroma is dark roasted grains and whiskey. Taste is dark roasted grains and whiskey.

3.9 355 ml bottle. Pours black color with a small beige head. Whiskey evident on the nose, wooden notes, roasted malts, cocoa notes, dark chocolate. Flavor is roasted malty bitter, alcohol warms a bit, whiskey notes are present, some dark bitter chocolate, grainy notes as well. Okay though a bit rough around the edges. 3525
4.9 Whiskey Barrel Stout has a medium, beige head, and a dark brown appearance, with some ascending bubbles on the side. The lacing is minimal. The aroma is of whiskey and dark malts. The taste is of whiskey, dark chocolate, cream, coffee, and roasted malts. Whiskey Barrel Stout has a high-medium body and a medium-dry finish. RJT
4.4 Bottle as Smokestack Imperial Stout 2014. Sampled in 2019. Black body under a samll but dense beige head. Nice aroma of dark malt and caramel with mild whisky and hint of vanilla. Pleasant alcohol. Taste is smooth, mild roasted dark malt, dry fruit, caramel, wood, whisky and warming alcohol. Fine body and long-lasting aftertaste. Super pleasant.
4.7 Here's my first holy shit beer in a long while. Super rich and chocolatey with molasses and woodiness, the barrel character comes through but does not overrun the beer. It has a bit of heat but doesn't get overly hot. Remains full bodied but still quite drinkable. A near perfect beer. Pours viscous deep brown like melted milk chocolate, but doesn't have that consistency. Very slim ring of light brown head.
3.8 From bottle. Opaque, thin, almost no head. Vanilla dark roast coffee. Sweet and smooth without being boozy
4.5 Bottle in 4 pack. Black and completely opaque. Smells of strong malt and roastiness. Really good. Definitely strong with tastable roast and hops, with a whiskey aftertaste.
3.7 yes I smell whiskey (not bourbon), molasses, dark chocolate. Flavors of alcohol, espresso, brown sugar, vanilla, I like that it’s light on the roast and not too sweet. Sweet finish, with a little tang. Very dark with dark khaki head. Well-crafted but kinda plays it safe.
3.9 Bottle pour from Total Wine & More, Burlington. Appearance is opaque black with no sparkle, finger-width light brown head after vigorous pour with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is strong roasted malt, chocolate, barrel and milder whiskey. Taste is roasted malt, whiskey, dark fruit and tart fruit. Mouthfeel is medium side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste with mildest of alcohol warmth. Overall, nice elements but there is a tart quality that I'm not the biggest fan of. Still good but not great.
3.7 Bottle shared by tfontana, thanks Tom. Aroma is the same as the flavor. Flavor of vanilla, slight rye, in the finish also a slight earthy malt hint. My only beef here is the thinner body. Not the bold full body you normally can find in the style. Overall, still good!
3.2 Pours a deep dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of oak, whiskey hints of cocoa, coffee. Taste is smooth. Cocoa, whiskey. Very nice stout. Alcohol is hidden by the smith taste,
3.4 Lots of sweet bourbon and chocolate on the nose. Dark brown color with a tan head that quickly fades. Sweet up front. Charcoal bourbon with dark bitter chocolate and some molasses. Dry... bitterness enhanced by alcohol burn in an of way. Slick mouth feel with alcohol burn on the finish.
3.9 On tap at Fortnight in downtown Providence, RI. Dark-brown-black with a warm medium-brown medium-fine head. Aroma is milk chocolate, coffee, raisin, caramel, bit of brown-sugar, bread crust, grasses, lighter notes of forest, earth, and cherry. Body is medium-heavy, syrupy-starchy somewhat oily, carbonation is medium-light, lightly creamy (would be amazing creamy, but not very intense). Flavor is cocoa powder, bread crust, dehydrated milk, some light brown sugar, some raisin, touch of blackberry and grass. Nice basic chocolate BBA stout. The BBA really rounds out the flavor, rather than adding much noticeable vannila / oak!
4.1 Fat @ La Trappe, SF. Brun öl med inslag av rött med ett större mörkbeige skum. Doft och smak av karamell, trä, kaffe, choklad, lättare vaniljtoner och alkoholvärma.
4.6 Pours black with a light tan head. Strong bourbon sent with a slightly woody, fig/plum taste. Rich, smooth and easy to drink.
3.8 Bottle, pours very dark opaque brown with tan head. Vanilla, chocolate and whiskey aroma. Strong alcohol taste with chocolate notes. Boozy malt finish.
3.9 Served up on tap at Busters with blonderedhead. Special Boulevard releases tapped today! Pitch black or at least a dark cola brown in color with minimal head. Looks like a winter option. Nose is roasty will chocolate and vanilla. There's also a healthy dose of whiskey peat. Feels like it's going to be a big beer. Taste confirms those suspicions...so much flavor and so many different components. There definitely a large dark fruit element offsetting the coffee characteristics. Vanilla comes through as well. Alcohol presence felt. Finishes like a Belgian dark ale more than an imperial stout. I enjoy this one.
3.2 12 oz bottle. Pours a nice opaque dark brown with a dense light brown head. Scents of chocolate, vanilla and light bourbon. Big bourbon tastes up front with sweet notes and warming alcohol. An odd vegetal middle taste is followed by a dry short finish with a nice chalky mouthfeel. It does not improve through the glass. Wanted to like this one but I don’t.
3.3 Pours almost black, highly contrasted ivory colored head. Nose is chocolate, sweet woodiness, a flash of mint. The bourbon finally comes through on the palate along with lacto sweetness, Kahlua, cocoa nibs, perhaps chicory. Thinner feel than expected. Not bad, could use some depth...a little more roast to balance the sweetness.
3.8 Pours very dark brown to black with little head. Smells old, whisky and sweetness. A bit punchy at the start but a smooth creamy finish. Malty and woody flavour smooth chocolate and whiskey. Hids the ABV quite well.
4.0 Massive and boozy, really dark and really stands up strong in the flight that we had at the tasting room. It's really good - can't really beat it!
4.0 Yummy
3.4 Pours a dark brown to black with a thin tan head. A tad thin but it has some nice roasted malts taste and just a hint of sweetness. Not too boozy. Ok and fairly enjoyable but nothing special.
