Originally brewed by Crown Buckley as Reverand James Original Ale, the brand was kept by Brains when they aquired Crown Buckley in 1998.

The Rev. James is named after the founder of Buckley’s Brewery the Reverend James Buckley (1770 – 1839). It is brewed to a traditional recipe and has been described as having a flavour not commonly available these days. Full-bodied and warming, The Rev. James is rich in palate, spicy and aromatic with a deeply satisfying finish.

2.6 Bottle, 500 ml @ The Old Fishing Shack, CY. This is a very confusing one. Clean brown, thin beige foam. Fodder, hay, wet bread, tart (which gives me some raspberry feeling actually) on the nose. Watery palate, short aftertaste, little bitterness. Featurless ale with a thin body. Not an interesting one, and definately not a one i would drink again.
4.2 Barwa brązowa, gęsta piana długo utrzymuje się na powierzchni. W smaku słodowe i miodowe nuty szybko ustępują delikatnej goryczce. Obecne nuty kawowe, rodzynkowe, nieco karmelu w tle. Piwo gładkie, dobrze zbalansowane.
2.0 Marginally better than the cask offering. Fairly dull and not very exciting "traditional" ale. Historical review, unfortunately no tasting notes.
3.2 440ml can from RusBeerShop in Moscow. Pours clear amber with a medium-sized white head. Aroma is malt, toffee, nuts. Taste is light sweet, caramel malts, fruit, light bitterness.
3.0 It’s pretty good I’d buy it again but one is enough. More than that and I would think it would get a little sickly.
2.3 Sweet, toffee notes, rich , mild hops, chestnut colour, little aroma, white frothy head.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber colour with a frothy off white head. Aroma of caramel, slight bready malts, nuts and some spicy red fruits. Taste of red fruits, cherry, some caramel, slight bready malts, a little nuts and subtle spicy hops. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A dryish, spicy fruit bitterness in the finish. Similar to the cask version. Malty, fruity and a good body.
3.4 Bottle. Backlog rating from bottle collection and historic scoring. Source not recorded. No tasting notes kept, just rating.
3.2 Can. Bronze color, good white foam. Aroma: caramel, a bit of floral hop, fruits and dough. Malty taste, caramel, nuts, light hio bitterness, a little toffee and alcoholic.
5.0 My current favourite. Old fashioned with a great balance of hops and a generous 'loose' head.
2.9 On holiday in wales amber colored body with an off white head and with a spicy malt hop aroma a spicy malt hop sweet taste with a light bitter finish
3.0 Knocking out some quick ratings of beers gifted to me and then left unloved on the side. Had the cask already and have copied it here - turns out no amendments: Sour malty aroma. Chestnut. Good creamy off-white head. Medium bitter. More malts. Sours towards the finish, with a herbal element rearing its head. Slightly watery. Soft carbonation - a pillow for the tongue! However the astringent finish drops a point on palate. Enjoyable enough. Nothing to look at here.
3.0 September 24, 2015 - at Craft (Covent Garden) - 500ml clear bottle from Waitrose - hotel room rate. Clear bubbly copper with a huge lasting foamy off-white head. Skunky aroma - just like thousands of other weak lagers in clear bloody bottles; some heather honey in behind, but ... blech. Taste - no skunk (yay!) - it’s like an extra sweet and floral golden bitter, light, no alcohol, a bit grassy - simple with nothing all that wrong with it other than dullness. Light body, airy, finishes quickly - some caramel in the linger. Start using cans or frickin’ BROWN bottles, breweries.
2.0 Barwa bardzo ciemnego bursztynu prawie czerwona. Piana wysoka dosc szybko sie redokuje . W smaku slodko karmelowe. W aromacie plasmodium malolactic co czuc. Piwo slabe jak woda z soiem.
3.0 Bottle. Reddish Brown in colour. Spicy. Malty; roasty malts, grainy, caramel. Some hop bitterness. Spicy roast malty with a slightly sour fruit/hop edge. OK. Drinkable. (2010-08)
2.9 Bottle from Ash for my birthday. Cheers! Amber with a thin off white head. Toasty aroma. The flavour is more toast with spice and some aluminium. An OK bitter.
2.8 3/11/16 bottle at home. Promises a lot but comes up short. Lacks depth. No real character to it. It's a drinkable bitter but that's it.
2.6 Bottle at RBESG 2016 Grand Tasting Part 1, Brew Pub Le Sec. Clear amber with a ring off white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, toast, chemical and sulphur notes. Flavour is moderate sweet and light to light moderate bitter. Above light bodied with soft carbonation. [09-07-2016]
3.4 Amber pour with a malty, toffee aroma, very similar in taste and easily drinkable. Nice bitter finish but feels like a typical ale. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very nice drink but didn’t stand out from the crowd.
3.3 Bottle. Pours clear copper with a thin white head. Aroma is caramel malt, slightly vegetal. Flavor is caramel malt, mild hops, and a bit more bitter and herbal finish. Not bad.
2.9 500ml bottle. Dark coppery colour with a thin white head. Malt aroma, taste is malty caramel and a little fruit. Ok
3.2 Bottle. Amber colour. Malt and grain aroma. Malt, grain, caramel, sweet taste. Medium body.
2.4 Clear red-amber beer. Light aroma of malt and fruit. Taste is a splash of tangy fruit and.... very little else, in truth. A bit of citrus, some hop but it’s a bit watery and limp. There’s a touch of bitter, malty aftertaste but it really does nothing.
2.4 RBESG 2016 in Barcelona, Grand Tasting. 500 ml clear bottle, ABV 4.5%. Copper colour. Toffee, grain and dust in the aroma. Toffee and too weak hops in the fairly uninteresting flavour.
2.8 Bottle at home - legacy rating. Aroma fruity, particularly dark fruits such as loganberry and plum. Clean on the palate, without the sticky finish that often comes with this type. Lacking a particularly bitter bite, but not bad.
3.0 D’ampolla al RBESG16. Cervesa amb aromes inicials de sofre que deixen pas a mel, galeta i caramel. Llúpol baix. No m’agradat massa.
2.5 Bottle at RBESG16. Clear copper with white head. Some caramel, dust and cardboard. Light sweet and medium bitter. Under medium bodied. Shit.
3.1 500ml bottle from Aldi. Pours red-copper with a medium eggshell head. Aroma of roast malt, toffee, dry fruit. Similar flavor, some sweetness and a slightly dry finish.
3.2 500ml bottle. Amber colour with a two finger off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, fruit, light spice. Taste also of sweet caramel malt, fruits, with a little hop bitterness at the end, it’s really well balanced. Nothing outstanding but easily drinkable.
3.4 Pours a copper red colour with a creamy head. Aromas of malt and fruit. Tastes of honey mixed with caramel and fruit, with just a edge of bitterness. Feels a smooth drink with moderate carbonation. Overall one I enjoyed.
