Brains The Rev James Original (Cask)

Brains The Rev James Original (Cask)

Cask: Regular.

A Taste of the Good Life

Renamed from The Rev James when the Rev James range expanded to include Gold and Rye.

Originally brewed by Crown Buckley as Reverend James Original Ale, the brand was kept by Brains when they acquired Crown Buckley in 1998. Initially still badged as Buckleys, it became unbadged, simply known as The Rev. James.
The beer is named after the founder of Buckley’s Brewery, the Reverend James Buckley (1770 – 1839). It is brewed to a traditional recipe and has been described as having a flavour not commonly available these days. Full-bodied and warming, The Rev. James is rich in palate, spicy and aromatic with a deeply satisfying finish.

3.1 Cask at Owain Glyndwr. Dark amber, clear, velvety head. Light malty aroma. Taste brings some nutty flavors, and plenty more malt. Creamy feel, light sweetness, tiny bitter bite.
3.3 Aroma of malt, fruits, caramel and dried fruits. Deep Amber with a tan head. Medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium body with soft carbonation. Overall a nice Ale. A tiny bit unbalanced maybe.
4.1 Pint of Cask at the Toby Carvery at Cardiff Gate. Pours Light Amber with a white (but thin... think the bartender overdid it a bit) head. Aroma of Liquorice and subtle notes of citrus and hops. Taste is smooth, citrus, and an aftertaste of Liquorice and roasted nuts. Nice lacing on the glass. A really nice drink that would do well as a session Ale. Only reason not full score is it didn't keep it's head to the end... went a bit flat but that might have been because the bartender killed it a bit when he poured it. It's probably an acquired taste and not for everyone but for the afdventurous real ale conneseaurs would definitely recommend to give it a go
3.1 Draft at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours fairly transparent, reddish brown, with limited white foam, very fine. Aroma is malty, caramel, with a nice old school English hops aroma. Body is kind of thin, with very limited carbonation. This is truly British in style... Taste is medium-high sweet with delicate bitterness. Finish is average.
3.1 Pint at the Gate House JDW. Thick creamy white head. Clear Amber pour. Light bitterness
3.0 Cask beer served at the Last Post JDW Southend. Looks dark and creamy but has a particularly strange initial taste, alright after that but nothing to write home about. I suspect a few pints of this will cause a Massive flatulent Attack. Ooh ee, chirpy burpy, cheep cheep.
3.1 copper/ red colour. thick head. sweet aroma. taste is caramel, raisins, nutty. nice enough
3.5 18-04-2019; cask; White Lion Royal Hotel, Bala, Wales. The looks of the beer are nice. The colour of the beer is a lovely amber, almost turning brown. It is a dark shade of amber. The beer is again crystal clear. On top of the beer there is a lovey layer of soft, velvety white foam. Foam retention is good. A nice velvety drape stays on the beer for some time. Looks tasteful. The aroma of the beer is nice. The malts give nice aromas of light toffee, some nutty notes and a nice overall maltiness. Quite aromatic malts. The hops are light. They give a note of some herbal notes. There is the ever so slight hint of liquorice in the back. Yeast gives nice aromas if some fruity esters and a spicy note. The taste of the beer is nice. The malts give quite a nice warming sweetness. Besides the sweet malt aromas, there are also some nice slightly bitter malts aroma, caused by maybe a tiny roast. Also a hoppy bitterness is there. Lovely. Well balanced. The palate of the beer is alright. The beer has a medium-light body, smooth texture and light carbonation. The beer really is velvety smooth. The finish of the beer had some slight slight touches of liquorice and a nice note of some nutty malts. A really nice beer it is.
3.1 On cask. Quite a yeasty, bready beer. Very sweet, very flat and smooth. No real bitterness. Still well rounded.
3.0 Cask @ red lion , earlswood , Birmingham pale amber with a thin head with a hoppy malty taste , a rather thin beer and not much taste
3.1 Tap at The Hop Poles, Hammersmith. Aromas are malts, earthy notes and a little caramel. Not very prominent aroma. Clear amber brown body and cream white head. Taste is malts, bread, earth and possibly something else (forgotten). Creamy palate. Good overall.
1.9 Brought to me by mistake by the waitress at the “gastro-pub” we were in. Too polite/lazy to send it back (lol). Middle of the road, cold to the point of tasteless, nitro’ed-to-death old man fodder. Sh*t, sh*t, pure sh*t.
3.0 Traditional bready ale. Kinda watery. Has some subtle fruitiness that becomes apparent with more sips. Not that I did - quick guzzler on way home from work. Unfortunately served traditionally flat and vinegary - might have been better in a better condition (better pub)
3.1 Pours clear amber with low white head. Aroma of citrus, nuts, light malt. Taste is mild sweet and roasty with a medium bitter finish. Light and creamy body with soft carbonation.

3.5 Cask @ The Masons arms, Warkworth, Northumberland. Clear light brown body with nice solid off white head, good lacing on the glass. Not overly bitter, tangy and fruity, well balanced Nice beer.
3.0 07/03/17 at Mr Bumble, Blackwater. Sour malty aroma. Chestnut. Good creamy off-white head. Medium bitter. More malts. Sours towards the finish, with a herbal element rearing its head. Slightly watery. Soft carbonation - a pillow for the tongue! However the astringent finish drops a point on palate. Enjoyable enough. Nothing to look at here.
