Brash The Bollocks Imperial IPA

Brash The Bollocks Imperial IPA

We love ipa. Especially big hoppy ones. This west coast style imperial India pale ale is not messing around. At 12% abv and 110 ibu’s, it’s the liquid equivalent of Lenny in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Gently tending rabbits then suddenly….snap, it’s a whirlwind of crazy. Big citrusy aromatics, solid bitter backbone, and candy-like finish.

4.0 Bottle: Pours cloudy amber-gold with a short, light tan head. Aroma of old wood, earth, caramel malt. Resiny, breadheel, bitter wood, apricot flavours. Gets better and better the warmer it gets. This is a BIG beer....the earthy tones are amazing.
3.8 Caramel malt, tropical fruit dominate this beer. Alcohol is very well hidden. Not bad at all.
3.5 Bomber from Bieropholie, served cool in a tulip glass, shared. Hazy deep amber with a small, tan/yellow head. Rich maltiness, floral, woody, citrus hops, boozy, tons of caramel and dark bread crust. Medium+ body with moderate carbonation. Much like the nose with somewhat more hops and plenty of booze. Unapologetic.
3.8 Ins Glas ergießt sich ein orangegoldenes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr intensiv fruchtig malzig herb. Geschmack sehr hopfig bitter, fruchtig, klasse!
4.0 Lovely white head soft medium carbonation misty rusty amber pour the aromas rich caramel pine honey grapefruit stone fruit earthiness floral the flavours resin lovely pine apricot medium to strong bitter honey caramel grapefruit cumquat sweetness is so good a soapy note no problem the finish love a good imperial this is up there only one fault could be crisper otherwise good hops and malt lingering bitter pine finish very enjoyable
3.8 This brew is slightly cloudy with a yellowish head. The aroma is this ones highlight--it has hints of caramel and grapefruit. The taste was a letdown because it wasn’t as complex as I thought it would be--it had a citrus taste and hints of bubble gum. Mouthfeel was ok but it left my palate pickled in alcohol. It is worth a try.
3.6 22 oz bottle from the Argonaut into a pint glass. Accidentally left this in my car and it froze. Dark orange/amber and pretty clear (2nd pour was cloudy) with a frothy, lasting, off-white head, thick lacing. Aroma of sweet malts, citrus fruit, resinous bitter hops, light alcohol, pine, sugar and floral notes. Similar flavor, strong bitterness, sugary and sweet with light alcohol. Full body, goopy, sticky, dry feel and a lingering bitter finish.
3.6 Malty fruity aroma with high alcohol content easily detectable. Pours cloudy orange with a white head. Fruity nutty flavor with a long alcoholic finish.
3.7 22 oz Bottle. The beer pours to a deep orange color with slightly off white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of pine, earthy hops, bread. The taste has similar notes with of ctirus
(Rating #5415)
3.4 Decent beer. Never thought I’d say this, but this beer is too bitter. I love bitter, hoppy IPAs but this was too soapy and one dimensional. The aroma was fantastic. Strong and heavy earthy hops with lemon, light malt and grapefruit. Very thick and strong. Pour was a nice cloudy burnt orange with no bubbles and just a patch of bubbles for a head..Taste was big, strong and bitter. Soap, resin and window cleaner (or what I would imagine window cleaner tastes like). Not much going on other than an extreme bitterness. As it warmed it actually got better, but it was a little too medicinal for my tastes. More bitter than hoppy. Decent carbonation.
4.1 Solid DIPA. Beautiful nose and lovely hoppy flavours, nice balance also. Worth a try.
3.5 Probably a little heavy for the first beer on Xmas but great hoppy flavors. Beautiful color that browns lovely with thicker parts of the glass
3.4 Pours a nice gold color with nice white head and lacing. Good looking beer! Aroma of caramel and hops. The taste is a hopb kick in the face. This beer needs to sit for a year or two. It’s not bad just ok
3.8 Fin duft av friske citrus frukter. dekkende skum Fin gyllen farge. Smak av gode sitrusfrukter som sitter.
3.7 Pours dark gold with large white head and nice lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, Orange peel, and citrus hops. Taste is the same, but with burnt sugar, caramel malts, and booze.
4.0 12/12/2013. From bottle. Amber color with a white head, Pine, citrus and malty aromas with fruity and hoppy flavors.
3.9 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/21/2013. Pours very hazy orange copper color with a 2 finger dense cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, pineapple, orange rind, candi sugar, caramel, floral, grass, pine, bread, and floral earthiness; with a bit of booze. Nice and unique aromas with good balance of malt and hop notes; with big strength. Taste of big tangerine, pineapple, orange peel, grapefruit, orange rind, caramel, candi sugar, floral, grass, pine resin, bread, and floral earthiness. Good amount of pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, pineapple, grapefruit, orange peel/rind, caramel, candi sugar, floral, grass, pine resin, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hop flavors and malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a slick, sticky, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is fairly well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice and unique DIPA. Good complexity and balance of the big hop and malt flavors; and pretty smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
3.5 Bomber bomber. Hazy light copperish orange color. Aromas of floral/citrus hop and caramel. Medium bitterness. Slightly sticky texture. Medium to heavy body. A big beer. Big malts and big hops. Slight oaked flavors. Pine also.
Unterdurchschnittlich!
3.9 Bottle 22fl.oz. Clear medium amber orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, moderate to heavy hoppy, orange - citrus, dried fruit, light pine, light grapefruit. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and light heavy bitter with a long duration, dried fruit, hoppy, dry, woody, fruity hops. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20130828]
3.6 22 oz. bottle. Color is hazy amber with small bubbles of head. Nose and taste is huge West Coast influence. Whole cone hops, pine with plenty of resin, garlic notes with lots of caramel malts to give it a sweet fruity balance. Candy sugar note for sure. Medium to full in body, oily texture, with a effervescent carbonation. The commercial description is really spot on since after rating it I wrote damn near the same thing. This bottle is a few months old so I would love to see this on draft because it is pretty solid. I would like to re-visit this if I can find on draft in Massachusetts.
3.2 22oz bottle from Whole Foods Redwood City, CA. Pours soupy honey slicked with white. Peach bomb aroma of flan, tinned fruits in sugary syrup, chipshop battered sausage, orange oil-infused milk chocolate, dried flowers and Cointreau. Thick, tangerine-drenched, warmly floral brew implying menthol, mint Humbug and powdered ginger before finishing on an almost smoked almond malt suggestion. Big gulps of peach and honey throatsweet. Irrespective of whatever tonnage of hops it contains, it’s not hoppy or especially bitter despite the proclaimed IBUs. More than anything it tastes like orange Smarties. Reaching the conclusion that DIPAs are not IPAs at all and I don’t actually like them. Wish I had another Kipling to take the taste away and remind me what hops actually taste like.
3.8 22oz bottle-thanks jtclockwork for sharing-thin white-cloudy gold. A-dank/peach, lt/med malt. T-dank/resin hops with some bite, 3nd sweet lt/med malt-caramel.
3.6 Cloudy, almost milky burnt orange pour with a 1 finger, soapy, stick beige head. Aroma is loaded with citrus and resinous hops, some sweet malt, a little caramel, lots of sweet candy-like fruitiness. There’s a little earthy woodiness when you really get your nose in it. Flavor is loaded with sweet candy-like fruity notes, kinda berry and stone fruit, seems like it might be some sort of additive, lots of sweet caramel and sugary rum, a little dry wood, hay, sweet citrus, marmalade, a touch of vanilla, and some spicy booze with a little heat. Man this stuff get boozy pretty fast outside of the fridge, mostly in a good way, but nearing room temp=fiery hot booziness, almost like what I imagine a hop liqueur would taste. Medium to heavy body, with a syrupy entry, medium, somewhat sharp carbonation and dry, hot and boozy finish. Pretty good overall, but definitely on the "harder to approach side" of the IIPA spectrum. Starting into a 12% IIPA, one should probably expect such a thing. I might have given it a little more on the aroma and taste, since there is a lot going on here, and most of it is enjoyable, just not all together.
3.6 Bottle: Poured a bright beige/orangey color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of fruity and citrus hops with light sweet notes. Taste is sweeter than expected with some light fruity notes and some citrus hops also easily noticeable. Body is about average for style and no apparent alcohol. Enjoyable but a bit too sweet for my taste. I would suggest dropping the ABV which would also help drop the residual sugars.
2.5 Bottle and served in snifter: Pours a light amber hue with big fizzy head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of caramel, bread, pine, light tropical fruits, and a bit of medicinal vapours. The taste is sort of sweet for the genre, while the hops do try to offer balance they ultimately failed. Light pepper and clove finish. The mouth feel is somewhat sticky and very warming, boozy, metallic and medicinal. Not much of a fan, perhaps the bottle is too old?
3.4 Bottle. Pours amber with off white head with nice lacing. Aroma of citrus and and hops. Taste of floral hops and malts.
3.5 22oz bomber while visiting Albany, GA. Hazy orange pour with a good khaki head that sticks and laces well. Mild hop aroma, floral, a hint of citrus, lots of caramel, maltiness, bread, etc. Mildly bitter flavor, lots of sweet malt backing, caramel, touches of pine and citrus, but lots of malt.
1.6 Bottle: Thanks, Mike! Bright orange & amber, fairly opaque with some light translucency. Gray-tinted head reduces to a thin collar in record time. Aroma is extremely malt forward; caramel, buttery toffee, & only a faint onset of some lightly leafy hops. Sticky sweet nose, actually, and only one month old (fresh). Taste is mostly malt as well. Sweet caramel, toffee, butter & some baked bread. Hops show up a little more; peppery with mild bitterness, but nothing compared to the malty sweetness. Huge, heavy, & sticky body. Lots of residual, unattenuated malt sugars. Not really my thing... not a big fan of malt-heavy and/or sweet DIPAs.
