Brau Brothers Moo Joos Oatmeal Milk Stout

Brau Brothers Moo Joos Oatmeal Milk Stout

Moo Joos combines the full body of a Milk Stout with the silky smoothness of an Oatmeal Stout. Lactose sugar in the boil contributes a full and creamy mouthfeel while toasted and flaked oats in the mash round out the beer with an oily texture. A deep malt bill builds layers of roasty notes with hints of chocolate, coffee and anise. A traditional British Cask Yeast is then pitched, which leaves us with a fruity, malty ale.

3.7 Nearly black. Two finger of tan bubbles. Aromas of coffee, black malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Light sweetness. A little less dimensional than the aromas. Roasted malts, and light licorice, and ash. Still a nice brew. 5/12
3.5 12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with decent tan head. Nose is chocolate and coffee. A little watery in the mouthfeel. A little too bitter for a milk stout.
3.6 Had this one multiple times and noticed some changes over the years. This review is based on the 2016 version. Picked up a single 12-oz bottle from Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, Minnesota. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with an average sized tan head that quickly dissipates and leave behind some spotty lacing. Aroma of chocolate and light Hawaiian BBQ sauce with some floral hops and a touch of cream. Taste is where the oatmeal and lactose is better detected with flavors of chocolate, lactose and floral hops. Finish is semi-sweet with a short chocolate and vanilla after taste.
2.6 Delicious and creamy. Rich malt and incredibly smooth and decadent. I think the word is unctuous to really capture what is going on here. Lots of coffee, too.
0.9 Initially tastes sour and like an ash tray. Then realized it was supposed to be esspresso and roasty. Guess I learned what that tastes like. Its alright. Definitly takes some getting used to if you havent had this type before. Watery as well. Dumped it .. maybe I got a bad one
3.5 Bottle into glass. Pours black with a moderate somewhat foamy tan head. Pleasant aroma of roasted malt along with a bit of chocolate. The flavor is roasted malt with chocolate malt followed by some ash. A bit dry and ashy at the finish with a little sweetness. Not as creamy as I would expect in an oatmeal milk stout.
3.8 Aroma is strong chocolate. Taste is sweet milk chocolate with some watery seltzer. Good.
4.0 Pretty much just a straight -forward milk stout. Clean afttertartaste, great body.
3.8 Bottle, Fargo, ND, USA. Xmas road trip. Black, dark head. Ink and prune aroma. Thick with a nice sharpness. Some resin mixed with dark chocolate and a spruce finish.
3.1 12 oz bottle to cervoise. Pours cola black, brown dissipating soda head. Aroma of cocoa, coffee, roasted oats. Taste of same with dark fruit sweet finish.
3.9 Stellar oatmeal milk stout. Aroma of roasted grain and some dairy. Very light bitterness and soft milky flavors. Really well balanced and easy to drink. Pours brown. Had in the dells
3.4 Nitro on tap at the brewery (Marshall, MN). Poured black, with a nice silky brown head and nice lacing all over the glass; thick. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts. Taste is coffee and caramel, some hops towards the end. Great beer; enjoyable and very drinkable.
3.8 Draft @ Dudley’s. Nice roasty aroma. Jet black color with a tan head of tight bubbles. Roasty flavor, with a little bit of a citrus taste. Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Overall, very drinkable!
3.0 Bottle @ Deyholla’s. Deep brown with a khaki head. Nose of nuts, cream, carameised espresso beans. Rich and sweet. Flavor is similar. A bit creamy. Somewhat tinny. Coffee creamer. Medium body, soft carb.
3.8 12 oz. bottle from Woodman’s Market, Waukesha, WI. Dark brown cola-like pour with a short khaki head. Expected dark roasted malt aroma of dark chocolate and roasted coffee with faint floral hops. Taste features dark roasted espresso and light smoke with a chocolatey finish. A nicely done milk stout.
3.1 12 oz. bottle. Pours black/cola colored with small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Taste was roasty and sweet.
3.9 What you’d expect from a good milk stout. Sweet and chocolately with a nice sourish finish. Thick and creamy mouthfeel.
3.4 Sampled at Northgate Andover beer tasting. Smoky, with oatmeal up front, and coffee coming in late.
3.9 Draft at Local Beer in Omaha, courtesy of jbuskirk and HuskerTan, than you gentlemen! Also listed as Red Velvet. Clear maroon color, beige head. Aroma of cocoa powder and subtle peppermint. Taste has hot cocoa, peppermint, marshmallow. Very tasty.
4.4 While I appear to develop a speech impediment whenever I try to talk about this beer (even though I know Joos is supposed to sound like "juice" as a clever way of rhyming with Moo, I keep saying it phonetically like "Jews"), I have no hindrances when it comes to enjoying the stuff. Some Stouts take a little time to grow on me. I liked this one as soon as I smelled it. Toasted oats, light coffee, and hint of vanilla-like sugar. Taste is redolent of chocolate, cream, rich malt, and a bit of black licorice. Moo Joos is one of my latest favorites among other awesome Sweet Stouts. Now if only I can learn to say its damn name.
3.6 Pours black. Aroma and taste are sweet chocolate, some roasted malts, and a smooth finish.
3.5 On tap in Minneapolis (MN) The dubious selection at the hotel bar at least offered this novel sounding oatmeal stout. The results were not nearly as bad as I thought they might be. While I would probably not pick up more it does merit at least a couple of ounces if you run across a bottle and want a respectable Minnesota tick. Aroma / Appearance - A rich black base supports waves of beige head. Cool oatmeal cookies on a ledge blend with smoke in a dry sweetness. Flavor / Palate - Cooling oatmeal refreshes the tongue. Ash, cold campfire residue, and then a malty finish brings to mind the shadows of Founders Breakfast Stout. It does not belong in the same class as the best of breed but as a local offering this could make a solid daily drinker for colder months.
2.6 355ml bottle. Brown pout. Thi sis really not stout-liek at all and to me a very poor stout. Very mish-mashed between flavors and lacks any semblance of body.
3.5 Bottle->nonic, thanks GenDV138! Black with small tan head. A: chocolate malt, oats, lactose. T: cocoa, malt, soy, lactose notes. Ok.
3.3 12 ounce bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of malt and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, milk chocolate, vanilla, and some lactose. Missing something.
3.5 Drank warm. Dark black. Creamy chocolate. I pick up on the anise, but only after reading that it has it. I’d like to try others from this brewery.
4.4 Probably my favorite milk stout yet. A sweet start with a slightly bitter finish, pairs perfectly with any burger or pork sandwich.
3.7 12 oz bottle pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, vanilla and chocolate. Taste is malts, coffee and some vanilla .
3.0 Opaque black with a rapidly quelling beige head. Delectable aroma consisting of chocolate milk, caramel, and roast. Light bodied for a stout. Chocolate, caramel, and roast present themselves in the flavour with a slightly bitter and roasty finish. Pleasant, but can certainly offer more. I was hoping the chocolate milk present in the aroma would be detectable in the taste.
2.5 First bottle to a tulip glass. Even though the pour was moderately aggressive, no head at all, just a tan ring. No visible carbonation. Second bottle to a pilsener glass, very aggressive pour, to better cause a head and view any carbonation. 2nd time, a 1 inch tan head, bubbly, dissipates relatively quickly with lacing. Carbonation is virtually nonexistant; an occasional bubble is visible rising up, and I have to hold it to the light to see that. After a few minutes, no visible carbonation at all. Dark brown to black color. Very nice roasted aroma. Taste follows the aroma, dominated by roasted malts, transitioning to sweetness and a touch of bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and only slightly bitter. Body is a bit thin and flat. Very flat. Overall, this is a very blah beer. Not very good at all. It is not drain-pour bad, but there is nothing special at all in this beer and the lack of mouth feel makes it really a struggle to try to enjoy. Given the reviews, I expected a lot more. I gave this beer 2 full bottles before writing this review. While the 2nd made perhaps a slightly better impression than the first, this does rank as the worst stout/porter I’ve had to date, admittedly not a huge sample population, but I definitely won’t be buying this one again.
