3.94 oz pour on draft at ChurchKey. Dark amber with light beige head. Aromas of caramel, malt, nutty notes. Tastes of caramel, nutty notes, toffee, malt, subtle dark fruit. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Very nice.
4.0Bottle - Clear reddish brown colour with medium sized beige head, fair retention. Fine aromas of cocoa, dried fruits, woody and earthy notes, herbal hops and a touch of smoke. Taste is sweet malty with roasted nuts, dried plum, red berries, chocolate, wood, cardboard. Medium body, soft carbonation, silky texture, smooth finish. A very nice, smooth, balanced beer.
3.3From tap at Braustelle. Hazy copper color with off white to light beige head. Malty aroma, light roasted, smoked notes, bacon, bread, caramel. Sweet and bitter like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.
3.1(Bottle) Brownish amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, roasted nose with toast, dried fruit, crisp-bread, a touch of chocolate and a distant hint of sweet gale. Malty, roasted taste with notes of dried fruit, crisp-bread, some orange, chocolate, toast and a balanced, slightly metallic bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Tasty and well balanced. Quite enjoyable.
3.5Aroma is malts, nutty and a hint of sweetness. The flavor is malts, mild sweetness, fruit and a tart/slightly sour finish.
3.3Bottle @ home, picked up at Supermarket Liquor for $5. Pours a dark reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. The aroma obviously shows age - there’s some cardboard, caramel, dust, yeast and bread. Medium/thin body. A touch of smoke. Kind of burnt flavor. Caramel, burnt wood / ash, a little doughy flavor. Not in great shape now but shows some promise.
3.9Rating refers to Freigeist Ehrenfelder Alt. Pours deep copper from bottle with thin tan head. Caramel malt aroma. Sweet malty flavor with roasted complexities of semisweet chocolate, coffee. Dry finish with nicely balanced hoppy aftertaste, though somewhat smoky. Medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation. Unique and unusual beer. A very clean, bitter, dark amber ale.
3.4Bottle, Göller. Light fruity licorice roast. Dark ruby red. low head. Medium full sparkly body. Solid fruit base, salt licorice, roast, herbal and grassy hop bitter backstop. A hint oxidation retronasal, otherwise pleasant licorice beer :)
2.6Muddy blackish brown color. The smell is mainly roasted. The taste is dominated by malt aromas that are a little bit too roasted for my taste. The aftertaste is a lot milder. Solid beer, but not my style.
3.4Strong flavors of cocoa, dried fruit and caramel malt. Bitterness and body are light and overall this Altbier is quite drinkable. Half liter very worn returnable bottle labelled Freigeist Ehrenfelder. Picked up an a whim at State Line Liquors.
3.3Bottle from Systemet.
Pours a very cloudy, darkbrown with a firm brownish head.
Has a distinct nose which is not entirely nice, a slight tinge of manure.
Very nice taste with heavy maltiness and a distinct hoppiness.

3.6Brown color with reddish highlight and small tan head. Aroma of malt, but not the sweet irritating malzbier smell. Dry bitter chocolate. Taste is cocoa powder, malts, but not sweet. Medium body, bitter. Wow, I like this very much.
2.8Light on the tongue, but nice and more complex in the aftertaste. Smells and looks really appealing!
3.931/I/15 - 33cl bottle @ Nieuwjaarsreceptie Gentse Biervereniging - BB: 13/VI/15 (2015-122) Thanks to Bartlebier for sharing the bottle!
Clear dark brown beer, irregular beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: quite some chocolate, caramel, malty, bit sweet, grains. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: roasted malts, some coffee even, pretty bitter, metallic touch, caramel, cocoa powder, some overripe banana. Aftertaste: bitter, caramel, chocolate, little fruity, bit grassy. The Düsseldorfers will not like me saying this, but one of the best alt beers I’ve had. Ok, ok, it’s totally out of style, I realize that. ;-)
2.8Pours garnet brown with a small beige head. The aroma has murky caramel and bread, some toffee and a bit of mushy dirtiness. It has a light crisp body with a light amount of carbonation. The taste is medicinal, metallic, astringent and comes across like drinking pennies. The finish quite offputting. Very strange it would be this way, I’ve like everything else I’ve had from the brewery.
3.0Pour is a very dark brown with a very small tan head. Aroma is sweet caramel and some cocoa. Flavor is more of black bread with some char malt. Not much of a hop presence but the malt carries this one. I don’t have too many alt beers but I guess this fits the category. Plenty malty. Bottled as Freigeist Alt.
3.033cl bottle from Systembolaget, Strömstad (as ’Freigeist Ehrenfelder Alt’). Pours slightly hazy dark brown to copper coloured with an off-white head. Malty aroma with notes of dark fruits, roasted malt, caramel and hints of herbs and wood. Sweet and malty with a balanced bitterness. Easy to drink and quite nice.
3.3a) Old rating, 0.5l swing-top bottle. Best before 05.12. Brewed in Cologne. Nice roasty-smooth Alt, not as bitter and roasted as the Düsseldorfer beers, but characterful, malty-roasted, nice.
b) 33cl bottle, brewed at Göller. Very dry and malty beer. A bit dusty, fresh. Easy to drink but dry and dusty. Slightly sweetish, very dry. Nice not too bitter aftertaste. Not too bad.
3.10.33l bottle. Hazy reddish dark brown body, quickly disappearing white head. Aroma of grains, caramel, cocoa and some cloves. Taste of grains, cocoa, floral hops with a slight metallic character. OK beer.
3.1Mørk brun med tynt med hvitt skum. Lukter kaffe og mørke frukter. Smaker litt vørterøl. Tynn, lettdrikkelig. Noe bitter avslutning.
2.9Pours dark brown with low off-white head. Aroma of malt, toffee, hazel nuts, cherries, slightly roasty. Taste is sweet with lightly roasted finish. Light, smooth body with soft carbonation.
2.8Taste of roasted malt, not sweet, not bitter, a middle of the road plain taste, suited for session drinking. If it wasn’t from the alcohol strength. A flaw in the aroma: cooked vegetables.
3.3Trade with McTapps
Couleur brune, mousse qui disparait. Nez chocolat, malt toasté, café, caramel (on dirait une porter). Gout malt toasté, moult de café, note de houblon, caramel et épices. Corps assez leger. Fin longue amère et note grillée. Pas mal
3.5Bottle 33cl kindly shared by Calisky. A brown beer with medium heady, nose is nice on caramel, toasted malt, chocolate. Aroma is on dry toasted caramel, licorice, spice, chocolate, honey, good body, excellent aroma, good hops, long bitter and toasted after-taste, excellent.
3.6Bottle @ home. Aged 1 year. Dark copper to brown color with some haze and a creamy beige to off white head. Sweet and dry aroma with lots of plums, raisons (delicately vinous), caramel, cocoa, herbs, marmalade, nuts and some ash. Nice!. Dry and big bodied for an alt, with a smooth grainy palate. Flavors of chocolate, ash, yeast, some caramel, grains and dark fruits. Mid taste has increasing nuttiness & herbs. Dry earthy and ashy bitter finish with some lingering marmalade.
3.2mørk rødbrun noe tåkete med lavt beige skum. Lakris, malt, karamell og mørke frukter. Søt, salt lakrissmak.
3.1Bottle (Freigeist/Goeller labeling).
Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium to dark brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (toasted nuts/bread, caramel, roasted grain), lightly hoppy (herbs).
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly alcoholic.
Pretty uneventful...decent enough aroma but kind of simple. Not particularly enjoyable to drink...flabby mouthfeel and mild flavors. Instantly forgettable.
3.3Bottle. Exploits the darker aspects of the style. Caramelly and floral aroma with lots upon lots of fresh cut grass. Light sweetness and a nice, residual sticky mouthfeel. Quite a chocolatey flavour finishing with an underlined bitterness. Tasty.
3.4Really nice crisp malty caramel toasty flavor. Perfect fall beer. Would pair well with grilled meat as well.
3.9500ml bottle. Bottle is misspelled "Ehrenfeider". It ahs a very dark pour and a murky brown appearance. The head is small and sudsy off-white. The smell is cocoa and roasted malt, fruity hops, very much like an american brown ale. This is a thick-bodied altbier right form the get-go. It is crisp and dry though with ashy roast notes, licorice, and a heavy-handed hop bitterness that is almost puckering, heavy herb and grass bitterness notes. Really nice meaty malty altbier.
