4.0Bottle bbe 31.12.15. Strawy golden colour (filtered? no particulate material at all) with a nice white head. Aroma of grass, light malts and some citrus. Taste is different to the other Kölsch beers you get in Cologne: citrus fruit and more than usual hoppy bitterness, well balanced with a nice light malt/caramelly body. Pretty good Kölsch, should have discovered it some years earlier.
3.4On tap at Pizzeria Paradiso Dupont. Hazy golden body with huge head. Nose is malty, toasty, with some grassy notes. Taste is malty as well with grass, hops and some malts.
3.3From tap at Braustelle. Hazy yellow color with white head. Light malty aroma, some straw and grassy notes. Sweet and bitter taste, grassy, bready, light citrusy. Medium oily with soft carbonation.
3.3Strohig gelb trüb, leicht säuerlich in der Nase, schlanker Körper, fruchtig trocken bitter, sehr lecker
3.1500ml bottle pours a hazy yellow gold color with a finger of white head that retains well but only leaves a few spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is grassy and grainy with some light fruits. Taste is a grassy and spicy hop bitterness with a light fruity and malty sweetness. Light bodied with decent carbonation. Overall, has a little more taste and body than a typical kolsch. Nice.
3.5Tap, gold pour, white head, nose is banana, taste is lemons, citrus, pretty decent
2.8The color is dirty cloudy yellow with solid foam layer. The smell has some malty cereals. Taste is bitter in the finish and has a slight sweetish cereals-cookie note. Quite refreshing though. Slightly different than other kölschs, but I like it more.
3.3Woody, herbal, sweet grain nose. Flavor is same plus lemon marmalade, spicy hops on the finish, mild bitterness, light butter feelz. Interesting, slightly sloppy take on kolsch.
3.3On tap. Pours a cloudy old with a white head and some lacing. The aroma and taste are both biscuit and malt, with a mostly dry finish and some slight spiciness over a light body.
3.4Hazy yellow color with no head. Aroma of caramel, yeasts, fruity, buttery. Taste id similar. Finish has quite some bitter hops. Smooth and refreshing. Not bad.
Update: From the tap at the brewpub. Very hazy orange-yellow color with white head. Aroma is citrus fruity, yeasty. Taste is light, citrus fruity, with a bready body. Bitter finish. Nice!
3.2Bottle as Freigeist. Unfiltered grey-orange body. Semi-buttery, reminds me of US Kolsch. Bright, but the butter tones are unacceptable to me. Doesn’t really capture the style. Neutered hospital Kolsch. The lack of filtration gives it some body. Overall not that impressive of an offering.
3.2lightly cloudy gold-orange with 1-inch egg-shell head. Aroma is sweet corn grain, some sweet grass/hay, and a bit of light brushy growth. Touch of clean caramel sugar in there. Body is light-medium-light watery, slightly starchy. soft, light, medium-coarse carbonation with a medium-soft burn. Flavor is dried grass, slightly metallic, touch of short-lived bitterness in the finish, bit of dried (none-sweet) grain. Not a whole lot else. Overall, an excellent smelling Kolsch with an OK flavor and lacking body.
3.2Bottle to pilsner glass. Cloudy deep yellow with a huge everlasting pillowy head. Lots of sediment at the top of the bottle, which is a new one for me. Clean crisp and bready. Classic hops in the middle and a bitter dry finish that makes me want another sip immediately.
3.4Some grass. Golden pour with good head and lacing. Light bitter finish. Good and easy drinking. Lots of barley. Tap at pizza paradiso.
3.4Has a cloudy, yellow color, with a small head.
Soapy yeast, grass and subtle citraic notes define the aromas.
Light-bodied beer with a dough wheat foundation, on which crisp, bitter hops with hints of citrus peel settle. Malts are foremost bready, with a toffeeish hint to them, which creates an interesting counterpart to the refreshing sour and bitter characteristics of the beer. Soapy notes from the nose are well integrated into the strawy body of the beer, illustrating the moderate bitterness very well. Easy drinkable, with an enjoyable complexity.
3.8On tap @ Braustelle. Hazy yellow with small white head an good lacing. Aroma is hoppy and grassy with citrus notes, light spiciness and floral presence. Taste is also grassy with biscuity malt, floral notes, citrus and light spiciness. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Fluffy mouthfeel. Light bitter finish. Dry and grassy too. Quite different than the tradtionnal Kölsch served in town. It’s quite tasty and super easy to drink though.
3.1Bottled as "Freigeist Ottekolong".
Shows a hazy orange with a medium sized spongy white head on its top, which diminishes to a thin film.
Mild citric-earthy smell.
Lemony aroma escorted by bread and earth underpainted by some hints of honey, mouthfeel is slick.
Citric, bread-crusty finish.
Good.
3.6Clear gold pour fluffy head. Aroma of bread yeast, hops. Tastes bitter honey, hops bread. Slight sour. Very dry finish.
3.5Vom Faß in der Braustelle, Köln-Ehrenfeld. - Orangegelb, sehr trüb, sahniger weißer Schaum. - Nase erstaunlich verhalten, schwach zitrusfruchtig-hefig. - Antrunk kräftig hopfenbitter mit Orangenschale, eingebettet in weiche Hefe. Mild rezent.
3.4500mL bottle as "Freigeist Ottekolong." Nose lightly sweet of the candyish variety, juicy grassy and herbal hops, light citrus and grain. Pours clear golden with an abundance of very fine carbonation and a sizable sudsy white head, looks beautiful in the Stange. Very pleasant, soft maltiness with spike of candy sweetness and grain, pale malt and light citrus. Hops exude a bit more perfume on the tongue, maintain faint grass and juicier aspects. Clean if a little hot, light bitterness revealed by the end. Pretty good one, seems to have withstood the trans-Atlantic voyage pretty well.
3.5Orange/amber hazy colour with a medium compact head. Smell is hoppy with bready notes. Taste is dry, with a definite hoppyness, I would say also licorice.
A nice beer.
3.8Bottle pours hazy gold with rich foamy head. Nice lacing. Melon, earth, straw, biscuit. Light bitterness and sweetness. Medium creamy body.
3.9Hazy light orange - thick, frothy lace - very tasty and interesting take on the style - full, frothy texture in the mouth - dry, toasty maltiness (a mixture and bready and crackery character) - light tangy acidity through the middle is followed by a mild balancing sweetness - moderate earthiness and crusty bread is followed by a complex finish of hop character (peppery character, moderate bitterness, tropical fruit) - my words are not really doing this justice, but this is one tasty beer - I love Freigeist!
3.2Pour is a cloudy yellow with a large white head. Aroma is a bit of doughy malt with some grass and lemon. Flavor is pretty decent. Big chewy, creamy, yeasty malt with some grassy hop to finish things off. Very malt heavy for a lager style but they make it work. Not my favorite style but this is one of the better ones. I guess an un-filtered kolsch is the way to go.
3.9Dobry kolsch, z bojna piana i przyznam ze pierwszy raz niefiltrowanego kolscha pilem. Przyjemne tresciwe, a jednoczesnie orzezwiajace. Piana naprawde spora i trwala. Mglistosc i metnosc porzadna. Skromna buteleczka kapslowana z jedna tylko etykieta.
3.1500mL bottle purchased at City Beer Store. The aroma has some sweet graham cracker notes present. Light mineral without much else. Seems a little on the sweet side. Unfiltered, moderately hazy golden body with a nice, strong, fairly large white head present. Starts with a pretty grassy, herbal, and aggressive hop bitterness. Light malt biscuit character in the middle, before the hops become way overbearing later on. Quite herbal, and much more bitter than I would expect a Kolsch to be.
3.7On tap at Braustelle, Koln, Germany, Friday 28th March 2014 Pours yolky yellow very cloudy with a slim white, clean head. Soft mouthfeel but good bitterness, hoppy and with a lovely citrussy (but not pushy) tang, lemony, mmhhh...great stuff just the right amount of bite. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.7
3.6Pours golden orange with a good sized white head. The aroma has spicy / grassy hops, mild caramel malt, modest toast, hints of bread and cereal. It has a medium body with decent amount of gentle carbonation. The flavor starts with dry caramel malt, paper, earthy/spicy hops and crackers. The finish adds some minerals and a bit more hops. There is a lingering dryness. Pretty nice.
