Breakside / Lompoc / 10 Barrel Passionfruit Sour Ale

Breakside / Lompoc / 10 Barrel Passionfruit Sour Ale

One of the two beers brewed specifically for our second anniversary is a collaboration between Breakside’s Sam Barber, Lompoc’s Irina Bierzynski, and 10 Barrel Brewing’s Mayme Berman, all alums of Lewis & Clark College. It is a sharply sour German wheat ale made from a 100% sour mash, infused with the tart and tropical flavors of passionfruit.

3.7 On tap at Kombinat. It's an unclear orange colored beer with a small white head. Passionfruit, cellar hints, tartness, some pale malts, orange zest and some generic fruity notes in the aroma. It's full to medium bodied, smooth and nicely carbonated, with flavors of passion fruit dominating. Orange, tartness, generic tropical fruits and a piney touch in the flavour. Lasting finish. A very refreshing and tasteful beer that would do well on a hot summer day. 170923
3.3 Tap @ Kombinat, Kristiansand. Hazy yellow body with a small, but lacing white head. Aroma has lemon, passionfruit minerals and yogurt. Flavor is pretty much as expected from aroma, rather sour, light and refreshing. Medium to light bodied with mostly acidic aftertaste. Nice and easy, but a bit too much of a lightweight for my taste.
3.1 ''Tis beer had a little more ABVs & a little more sourness. Nice beer to transition into the fall season.
3.4 Soft straw gold pour with two fingers of white head. A touch buttery in the nose/flavor, some fruit, tart. Buttery fruit in the flavor, a touch grainy, tart, crisp. Off flavors show more and more with time/warmth.
3.7 Hazy yellow gold in color... Aroma of passion fruits, wheat malts... Flavor is juicy passion fruits, wheat malt, light funk... solid
3.5 From tap. Hazy golden-orange with a frothy off-white head. Tart tropical and citrus fruit nose. Tangy sour fruit-forward flavors. Somewhat light bodied with dryish finish.
3.7 Tap sold by Yellow Ape at the Beer Zen Salt Valley Event. Breakside Passionfruit A cloudy matte brass color with a tangy passionfruit aroma. Light bodied and zesty wheat plus lots of acidic sour passionfruit. Refreshing and the cleanest sour I had at this event. I liked this alot.
3.7 Bottle. Hazy orange golden beer with a small white head. Aroma is fruity with notes of passion fruit, peaches, oranges, apricot and rosehips. Flavor is fruity with notes of passion fruit, peaches, apricot and oranges. Well balanced.
3.6 Sample at abf. Pours cloudy orange. Smells like orange. Tastes sour. Decent.
3.3 The Eighth Beer of my #6000 celebration (#8 of 13 - six beers on either side of 6000 and the milestone itself). Completely clear orange and copper coloured body with a large pure white head, about six centimetres tall that fades quickly, just like soda and just like real Berliner Weisses do, in Berlin. Aroma of sour grapes, yeast, bread, light grass and a bunch of tropical fruits, but passionfruit isn’t the strongest. Light-bodied; Yeastie and bready flavours at first that show some mellow fruits, a lot of malt flavours (without the body) and a dry, almost saison-y like finish of flowers and grass. Aftertaste shows some flowers, dry malt, tropical fruit sweetness and a very mild sour lactic and funky flavour with a good deal of effervescence. Overall, a decent beer, but nothing too special, and definitely not one I should have kept for so long and saved for a ’special’ rating. Nice to try from Oregon by way of Hawaii and back to the other end of our fair country to sample at home in [the real] Washington. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Tamura’s Market in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii on 31-December-2015 for US$7,49 sampled at home in Washington on 20-March-2017.
3.7 Bottle at Imazato. Tart fruit, passion fruit, grapefruit, lemon. Some yogurt, lightly lactic. Well integrated, nice level of tartness., Nice.
3.6 A gift: pours orange with a purpleish hints with a white head. Aroma is passionfruit and funky sourness. Taste is fruity and somewhat sour. Nice aftertaste. Some complexity. Easy.

3.7 Pours hazy gold into a tulip. Bright white head quickly recedes to skim surface. Lactic passionfruit aromas. Sharp and sweet with passionfruit and mango upfront turning mildly tart before the abrupt marshmallow finish.
3.7 TAP. A light version of passionfruit nectar, minimal head.. Passionfruit & a slight acidic nose.. Tart start leads to passionfruit nectar, finishing with a solid sour bite, lingers on the lips.. Sourced breakside
4.4 Decent acidic passionfruit smell. Nice passionfruit taste with a nice bready aftertaste. Medium body, high carbonation, and some foam.
3.4 Strong fruity passion fruit guava aroma. Smells like juice. Pours a cloudy orange amber color with disappearing wispy white head Tart sour acetic fruity flavor. Passion fruit throughout with bready wheat malt mixed in. Light bodied with high co2, lingering sour and sweet fruitiness. Aroma had me worried, but after tasting, this is quite good and refreshing. Definitely heavy on the passion fruit.
3.6 Bottle to tulip Consummation: Sour stone fruit, lychee, wheat, and lemon. Adjunct: Hazy, light amber with a heavy effervescence, and a 4 finger, frothy white head; aroma is passion fruit papaya with lemon, bubblegum, and a hint of malt; medium bodied and on the verge of puckering; nice beer, but the C02 is way off the chart
3.5 Appearance: hazy pale gold with a massive unwieldy and fizzy white head settling rapidly to a thin ring, no lacing. (3/5) Aroma: tart stone fruit, tropical fruit, zesty lemon, wheat malt. (7/10) Taste: high tart, moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (7/10) Medium-light body, lively carbonation, dry tart finish. (4/5) The huge fizzy head followed an enthusiastic decapping, but then settled down rapidly to almost nothing, and left no lacing. The big sour is very nearly unidimensional lactic in nature, but the added tropical fruit flavours (presumably passionfruit, but I wouldn’t be able to identify a passionfruit to save my life, so hell if I know) make it nearly interesting. Decently good fun and a light ABV make this an “any time” beer, but it would excel as a thirst quencher on a hot beach (under an umbrella, of course - the sun hates me, and I return the sentiment). (14/20)
3.8 650ml bottle. (4.0% ABV) Pours a cloudy golden with a large, fizzy, short lived, white head that laces. Sweet, fruity aroma of passionfruit, stone fruit, lemon and wheat malt with sour notes in the background. Sweet, fruity flavour of passionfruit, lemon, wheat malt and yeast with a crisp, dry, sour, slightly acidic finish. Light body with an oily texture and lively carbonation. A delicious, refreshing, easy drinking Berliner.
3.6 Draft pour at Bambinos Seattle, seen this for a wile now and have had it in a bottle though I’d rate on draft, there wasn’t much better on draft sadly. Cloudy lite golden pour, sour passion aroma, flavor is tart passion fruit. Not a lot of bite, but the tart flavor stays on your tong. Interesting sour.
3.7 Sampled from a 22 oz. bottle in line at Zwanze. Pours hazy, yellow, with a small, foamy, white head. The nose is grapefruit and mango, cloves, white bread, and honey. Sweet and mildly fruity, with a mild, easy tartness. Light body, efferevescent, crisp, and acidic. This is a fun, fruity, light sour.
3.5 650ml bottle pours a hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger white head that has decent retention and leaves no lacing behind. Aroma is dark berries with some lemon and funk. Taste is a berry tartness with a lemon sourness and a dry finish. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a nice sour ale that represents the style well and is tasty.
4.1 Rich and lively passion fruit nose on a ruddy gold low foam pour. Its rare for something to truly make good on its name but this does. The tart passion fruit comes through and washes down easily by the sour ale style. Fantastic.
4.1 Bomber. Sweet passion fruit aroma with fruity sour and wheat malt notes. Pours cloudy pale golden colored with a thin white head that has no retention or lacing. Starts with sweet passion fruit flavor that tastes bright and fresh with a nice light body. Finishes smooth and refreshing with slight sour fruit flavor as well as a some wheat malt. Excellent summer brew!
3.5 On tap at Darby’s Gastown with Jonny. Pours a hazy straw color with a white head. Aroma is sour and fruity. Tart taste with fruity notes. Refreshing stuff.
3.8 22 oz bottle purchased from Roths Sunnyslope Market. $5.79 Pours a cloudy but bright yellow with a lovely creamy and thick white head. Good and pleasant aromas of passion fruit , citrus and hay. Very nice flavours.sour but not to drying..the fruit is well done and not artificial. Well carbonated and smooth at the same time..semi dry in the end leads to easy drinking. Very nice lighter drinkable Berliner.
3.6 Draft. Amber beer with a cream head. Tart/light sour aroma with passionfruit. Passionfruit and light sour flavor. Medium bodied. Tropical fruit/passionfruit lingers with light sourness.
4.5 Huge delicious floral passion fruit aromas. Very hazy orange with a thin white head. Thin and light a soft zippy wheat let’s the fruit grow out of it gaining and acidic sour. Then they all blend and fade.
