Brekeriet Funkstarter

Brekeriet Funkstarter

This pale and slightly bitter farmhouse ale has a funky and fruity taste thanks to the secondary fermentation with brettanomyces yeast.

3.4 Bottle. Teku. Golden, medium hazy with white, medium, semi-densed head. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma is very yeasty (barnyard, leather, wet animal hair) and spicy (pepper, herbs, clove). Secondly light to medium floral and lemon peel aromas, broken by some baked bread, crackers and delicate honey notes. Funkiness is lightly present. Taste is lightly bitter and nothing more. Light to medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Finish is dry, yeasty and mild. In general not that bad as it is described by some guys here. Surly it has yeasty and spicy notes, but nothing very interesting. So I’d say that this is rather average saison with solid base for improvement.
3.3 bottle at brewbot highly carbonated hazy greenish yellow, lightly funky, mouldy hay and a touch of manure. Citrus, light bodied, dry bitterness, could do with being a bit older to let the brett come through more but its already overcarbonated; so would hate to think how fizzy it’d be then!
3.1 Bottle at home, bought at Bierhalle Deconinck. Wattery, lemon sour, like a bitter grape feel, it’s ok not special.
3.8 330ml bottle from Salt Horse. 5.0%. Pours golden with a light haze and a huge, ever-growing white head. Aromas of floral hops, sherbet, fresh lime, straw. Taste is light bitter, some brett yeast character, light spice, more lime rind, hay. Almost lime pickle, but without the heat. Surprisingly gentle carbonation and mouthfeel after the burst at the start. Bitter finish. Good.
2.0 330 ml. bottle sampled. Bottled JAN 2016. Bright clear golden, fizzy egg-white head. Nose is metallic, faint butter, faint spoiled eggs & some funk. Fizzy taste, overly metallic, carrot, low butter, dirty barnyard, fizzy, dirty ditch, awful brett, low calky, faint mold finish, plaster,… This is their Brillant allover again, I do not know which yeast strains they used but this is not fun at all, metallic, butter, granted very dry but also chalky, plaster,… etc. Very dry & fizzy so there is that but so many flavours I do not really want in a beer. Brekeriet has made some really good beers but I opt out of buying bottles given this one & Brillant. This is like a very poor Belgian with added brett which is more or less exactly what this is I suppose.
3.6 Bottle at home. Completely clear golden with a bit fizzy off white head. Hay, cloves, spicy yeast, white pepper, lemon peel, light wet dog, pineapple, lots of dusty bitter herbs that lost most of their aroma, fresh baked bread. Light sweet and almost medium bitter. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Bit all over the place but quite nice!
3.9 Bottle, batch 4, Jan 2016, drunk 5/25/16. Thanks, cogo! Lightly hazy body is a pale, straw-golden and is topped by a small, but well-retained white head. Awesomely understated funk in the nose slowly builds up with tons of basement, light barnyard and some slightly more bright, fruity brett notes. The heavy, but mellow funk slowly burns off (or the nose accustoms to it) and is replaced by dry, wheat-like cereal notes, delicate honey and cracker. Pleasant fruity esters have just a hint of pineapple-like brett daintiness and there is no alcohol or flaw. Dry but with a soft, wheat-like texture (or maybe just dextrines). Just enough honey-like malt sweetness to balance the beer without taking away from the dryness. Lemon-lime-like brett notes are delicate and complement the soft, peppery phenols. Herbal and peppery hops linger on gently, with easygoing fruitiness and a hint of tartness to clear the palate. Delicious, modern saison!
3.1 Flaske 330ml fra Vinmonopolet Tromsdalen. Drukket på Bergstua 4 Mai 16. Lys gyldenbrun. Litt uklar. Lavt luftig kritthvitt skum. God fruktaroma. Lett sitrus & appelsin. Smaken mest appelsin med hint av mandler. Avslutter tørt. Bunnfall igjen på flaska.
2.1 Prawdopodobnie trafiona butelka.
3.2 Shared bottle at Cardinal, Stavanger. Pours light amber with little white head. Aroma of fruits, horse stable, hay, some spices. Tastes slightly sweet, but bitterness dominates.
3.3 330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.0%. Golden colour, moderate white head. Nice funky aroma of farmhouse, horse stable, fermenting apples. The flavour is less sour than I expected, with a more pronounced hoppy bitterness than in any other "farmhouse" ale I’ve tasted. dry, moderately funky and yeasty / peppery, but first and foremost bitter - too bitter for the style, I think. Not a bad beer though.
3.8 Bottle at Churchkey. Hazy yellow color, big white head. Dirty earthy aroma. Taste is herbal fruit and straw. Nice.
3.8 33 cl. bottle. Hazy orange colour with a white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, brettanomyces, spice, yeast, grape and sourness.
3.3 New Beer Distributors, NYC bottle: pours golden with a white head. Aroma is floral, bretty, with some light fruit. Tste is slightly bitter and quite tangy. The brett is powerful in this one, but it does not make it too sour or earthy or anything. Not bad.
3.8 Bottle Batch 9. Expeted more character. Hazy orange frothy white head Nice aroma of citrus and flowers, hint of honey. Taste slight bitter, honey. Fizzy feel.
3.5 basement aromas, earthy, leaves, caramel, hay, amber, hazy, white foam, heavily sour, lightly bitter, light sweetness, light body, oily feel, soft carbonation, long finish,
3.6 Aroma is citrus/lemon, spices, strong tartness and a relatively small hint of dark bread. The flavor is fruit/lemon, medium sweetness, malts and a mildly warming finish.
3.0 Bottle, nearing BBD. Myrky, dirty orange with stable white airy head. Funky citrus aroma, malt also. Funky, malty flavour with sour orange and something strangely artificial or chemical - I think it might be burnt plastic. Dry and fluffy but this chemical thing just goes on and on...
2.8 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, fizzy/frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium to dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (grain, corn starch), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly yeasty (basement), with notes of lemon/lime zest/juice, band aid, concrete. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation, lightly alcoholic. It’s kind of hard to think of this as a saison, but whatever. It’s like a light Bretty blonde ale that’s been mixed with lemon-lime soda...sour-ish and very fizzy and lemon-limey. So it doesn’t come across as particularly serious.
3.6 Bottle share during RBESG2015, Day 2, Malmö, Sweden - golden orange coloured pour with a white head. Aroma and taste is citrus fruity with prominent lemon, some orange, bretty, barnyard yeast, grassy and floral nuances, light palate, dry fruity finish.
3.5 Bottle to glass. Pour is hazy light orange with a full off white head. Continues to form lily pads of bubbles throughout. Aroma is quite dry and funky with light wood notes and notable acidity. Flavor is aggressive up front with funky acid and wood which gives way to a really nice dry barnyard flavor. This grew on me with every sip. Not quite as balanced as the others i tasted but definitely worth a try.
3.4 Bottle split at Beer Ditch, Malmo, 21/08/15. Very lightly hazed golden orange with a decent off white covering. Nose is dank wood, lemon rind, tarte orange, earthy, brett notes. Taste comprises light soap, bitter citric shreds, orange, light brett, funk, barnyard, yeast esters, trace of spice, damp hay. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok.
3.5 Sample from 33 cl. Bottle. Clear, golden colour with a thin, white head. Sour aroma with sour fruits, citrus, bretts and yeasts. Taste is lightly sour. Medium body with a creamy texture. Finishes dry and fruity. Good.
2.9 Sampled at SBWF 2013. Lasting white head. Opaque golden color. Fubnky aroma with a low lactic acidity. Pepper and spicy taste.
3.5 funky aroma with loads of grassy notes. Brett is a bit overpowering, a bit lacking everything else but pretty thirst quenching and easy saison.
2.9 How : bottle Appearance: hazy light orange, small white head. Aroma : honey, herbs, floral, oranges. Palate : light body, fizzy carbonation.
3.7 Bottle @ home. Pours a hazy yellow to light amber liquid with a stable white head. Dry, clean aroma of hay, dough, yeast, light brett, oak, grass. Funky and moderate tart flavor.
