BrewDog 5AM Saint

BrewDog 5AM Saint

Can/Bottle
American Red Ale

5am Saint is The Holy Grail of red ales.

We live in a world of disposable deities. Someone, somehow has managed to press that big, flashing moronic override button and we’re hard wired straight into the pockets of false idols trying to make a quick buck.

Sadly, for a lot of people the same mentality applies to beer. But who’s to know what’s worth worshiping when monolithic advertising budgets have you sucked down the rabbit hole in the blink of an eye?

At BrewDog we are on a mission to open as many people’s eyes as possible. Cast away any aspersions and let the crook of BrewDog be your guide in a whirlwind of conformity and mediocrity. Once this ruby liquid forms a foamy halo around your glass, you’ll never want to look back.

Malts: Maris Otter, Caramalt, Munich Malt, Crystal and Dark Crystal Malts
Hops: Cascade, Amarillo, Nelson Sauvin, Simcoe, Ahtanum, Centennial
Twist: Loads of late hops and bucket-loads of dry hops

3.7 12.02.2018 AR: Frucht, Harz, Erdbeermarmelade, Zitrus, Blutorange AP: trübes bernstein/kupfer TA: Zitrus, (Blut-)Orange, Harz
3.8 From notes, rated at 2018-02-17 How: bottle, fridge cold. Head: thin. Off white. Colour: amber. Aroma: American hops, resin, citrus fruits, caramel. Taste: thin to medium body, lively carbonation, tropical fruits, grapefruit, resin, some caramel. Easy to drink, yet quite rich. Really nice.
3.9 Interesting, nice in colour and in taste, was sort of extra-ordinary to pallate/tongue. But not such big satisfaction as what is expected when the beer appears. Still nowdays rare.
3.4 Rød øl. God tilpas malt sødme, men frugtig bismag. God eftersmag
3.7 Malty with caramel and dried fruits notes. Gives everything that a decent amber ale should give.
3.7 Mild Aroma of bitter hops, malt and slightly sweet Very nice red amber colour with small short lasting head Nice taste of dominating malts with sweet hop and fruit notes Nice thick mouthfeel with mild carbonation Nice!
3.5 Nice red colour. Light carbonation. Almost no head. Light smell of malt. Taste of malt and a hint of black barriers. Nice bitterness.
5.0 My favourite of the regular offering from Brendan
2.0 A scottish, copper, light foggy Red Ale with light head. Aroma is caramel, malt, hops, light cheese.
3.7 not bad.
4.2 Pours an orange coloured beer with a beige coloured head Notes of citrus fruits and berries fruits fresh fruits and berries
3.1 Aroma : Medium roasted caramel & chocolate maltiness, bags of autumnal red fruit with a damp fusty earthy note. Taste : As aroma. Medium bitterness throughout, dryish finish. Much more character in this 'red' than most of the style. Decent
1.8 Orange-amber, rather clear with notes of caramel malts, red fruits and cardboard notes. Light sweet at first and then a bit fruity with some acidity and the cardboard not wanting to let go of you. Disappointing.
3.9 From tap at Melkebaren with OSB people after concert at Hotel Residence 15.02.20. Cloudy chestnut amber. Dense and persistent off-white head and lacing. Excellently balanced aroma and taste of sweet crustal malt, pine, mango and Sevilla marmalade Good!
3.2 Fruity, sweet, malty aroma. Red color with reasonable head. Light body. Bit sourness.
3.8 Poors red, wisp of a foamy head and medium carbonation. Aroma of The Fall encapsulated in a beer, also boiled sweets, rustic pine and medicinal herbal notes. Tastes like a crisp blanket of autumn hoppyness. Light bitterness.
3.7 Very nice red ale, not getting all of the flavours stated on the can, but there is a definite fruitiness if you look for it. Nice carbonation, fairly unique flavouring
3.3 Copper coloured and hazy with a one finger wide head. Fruity, hoppy smell. Malty taste of nuts with a little acidity, slightly metallic. Medium carbonation.
3.6 330ml can brewed in Scotland at 5%. Smallish, dissipating head. Dark ruddy amber. Typical Brewdog mineral/soap aroma. Lowish carbonation. Delivers the promised berry and marmalade citrus hop notes, somewhat suitable for a Christmas seasonal, and likewise quite noticeable thickish caramel and biscuit malt. A nice little red ale, even somewhat richly flavoured if a little compressed in turn, and with only minimal notes of the Brewdog house style mineral water flavours. However, I must point out that this is supermarket beer dressed as craft. Brewdog should be embarrassed about the hyperbole on the side of the can, and I don't even mean the flowery language. At this price, don't think those 7 different dry hops are going to be strong or even distinguishable, or that you're going to get a particularly rich and indulgent experience from the 5 malts either (compare it to Ayinger's spiffing 5-malt Altbairisch Dunkel to see the difference). It's more money for less beer than Spitfire or Bishop's Finger. The liquid inside, however, is just about the same level of drinking quality - and make no mistake, that's a compliment. This is by no means bad beer. But perspective is needed: you won't find value here, despite it being economy brewing, and you won't find craft excellence, despite the label's pomp and pretense. I won't knock the liquid inside this can, but ultimately, you can either get the best of the supermarket bunch (Shepherd Neame, Fullers, etc.) or shell out extra for the true craft experience (Cloudwater, Burnt Mill, etc.). Brewdog is bottom-of-the barrel craft...or alternatively, overpriced supermarket fare. Don't be fooled!
3.2 I was never actually able to taste this on the day it was purchased for me. My close friend Lewis frank all 3 of the 3 bottles than were in my fridge. So instead, I’m going to list all the emotions I felt that day. Anger, hurt, betrayal, jealousy, rage, furious, irate, seething, infuriated, incensed, livid, apoplectic, murderous, steaming, at the end of my rope, breathing fire, fierce, hopping mad, splenetic, wrathful, woeful and disappointed. The rating I give for this ale is the amount of times I’ve asked for Lewis to reimburse me.
4.1 Frais, belle couleur rubis, robe opaque. Tons de caramel et leetchi. Finale peu présente...quoique. Le nez est ravissant
3.2 Ok but I’m obviously not getting the hype
