3.712oz bottle. Pitch-black color, minimal brown head. Very little lace. Looks like a stout, pretty much. Black is right. But this is not a stout. There’s no chocolate / coffee stoutness found here. The first thing is the bitterness -- this is bitter. Probably from the huge resiny hop flavor, with a licorice note. There is a bit of alcohol heat here, too. It’s a big brew for sure, really big body, but a nice light and crisp carbonation, and a good, long aftertaste. No complaints about the texture, it’s great. The flavor is powerful and assertive, but I’m not sure how much I can say that this brew is enjoyable and tasty. I mean, it’s great... but not something I would care to get on a regular basis, especially considering the $7 paid. It’s unique, certainly a good novelty and an interesting departure. Extra point for that. [Note: Found this bottle at Dutch’s last week -- had a white residue near the cap, definitely looks like it has been sitting in their walk-in cooler for quite a while.]
3.5Bottle:   Deep brown, nearly black, large foamy beige head, sticky lacing.   Has a slight Bourbony
vanilla nose.   Not what I expected.   Soft hop bite, a little black malt, softer Bourbon and Vanilla.
Hmmm... interesting.   Hop bite that lingers, with a little bit of a Black malt flavor.   Nose and start of
this beer suggests Bourbon and Vanilla, but doesn’t translate much onto the tongue.   If this is indeed a 10%
beer, it hides its ABV very well.   As it warms it gets a little hot, or should I say shows some heat.   Comes
across as a Black Bier with a minor hop bite, aged on Oak.   Interesting take on a Pilsner/Black Bier.   Not
have bad, better than I expected.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Oak lingers well after the finish.
3.6At a tasting, thanks Ariel, pours black with some red taints and light brown creamy head, aroma of chocolate, mint and nuts, flavor of smoke, mint, coffee, wood and liqurice, medium to full bodied, nice
3.5Bottle at a tasting. Thanks Ariel. Very dark brown to black-colored. Roasted aroma with some licorice hints, a bit of chocolate hints, herbal notes and some fruitiness. Roasty flavor with licorice, chocolate, faint coffee notes and some bitter hoppiness in the finish. Medium to full-bodied.
4.4330 ml bottle. dark brown color. amazing aroma of dark chocolate, mint, roasted malts, dark fruits and herbs. complex flavors of coffee, chocolate, spicy hops and tropical fruits. medium body and extremely long finish.
4.3Found this still in the fridge of a local bottle shop! Have one sitting in the fridge from a six pack I bought when it was first released. I was really excited to see how this newy acquired bottle would be with more then a year on it and from a random store!
Poured in my duvel tulip. Nice inch of brown coffee head with lots of bubbles on the side.
The scent is sweet yeasty goodness. A bit on the sweet side.
The taste is amazing. A strong dark/sweet malt flavor upfront. Then goes into a buttery creamy bitter finish...if that even makes sense. Then finishes with a strong bitter hop bite! WOW the hops have really held up over the past year!
Think I am going back to get some more bottles!
3.5Tasted on 5/31/11 from a 12oz bottle purchased at Sun Devil back in the day. Pours an opaque very dark brown with a massive taupe (I’m told that is a color) head that slowly recedes to rocky and uneven lace, leaving a ton of sticky residue along the inside of the glass. The nose has an interesting herbal, soapy aroma with lemon basil along with a dark chocolate malt aroma as well. The flavor is herbal sage, and lemon basil, both bitter and earthy, along with lightly sweet dark chocolate, bittersweet orange peel, and over-steeped tannic and bitter coffee. The body is full and very oily with average, but very smooth carbonation and a long herbal and coffee bitter finish.
4.1The beer pours light black with a light tan head that only rises about 1 finger, if that, is gone quickly. The lacing is very light.
The aroma is medium and very malty. A ton of bitter chocolate shines through with a touch of vanilla and alcohol.
The taste is nice and complex. It starts light with a little alcohol then finishes with a huge bitter chocolate taste. Its very bitter but dark chocolate, not hops bitter, there is a huge difference between the two and its very nice. Very similar to chocolate truffle.
The feel is great and very drinkable.
I had no expecations for this beer and came away very impressed. It has a unique feel I have yet to come across and very intriguing
3.412oz bottle pours dark brown/black with red highlights and a small tan head. Aroma has a roasted malt sweetness, molasses, floral, hops, and caramel. Taste has strong flavors of juniper and pine with a bitter hoppy finish. Interesting but not very into this one.
4.1Bottle from Bevmo: Once poured a thick frothy head develops and will linger around for a long time afterwards while the liquid is a dark brown color near opaque. In the nose, a delicious aroma of roasted malt and signature Stone style yeast is quite apparent and does begin to start salivation. The flavor is well balanced with a hint of tangy citrus fashion of hops added with a black roasted down malts which kind of makes this beer similar to Stone’s 11th Anniversary ale a.k.a. Sublimely Self Righteous Ale.
3.0Thick and dark in the glass. The aroma is of dark chocolate and cherries with a hint of hoppy bitterness. In the mouth it is thick and strong. It has rich coffee/chocolate flavours which would be delicious if they weren’t so concentrated. The hops are pretty overbearing in the finish. Tongue tightening. I’m not sure about its ’Black Pilsner’ title either.
3.5bottle shared by murphym - arouma is vanilla nad molasses, dark, baking chocolate, coco powder, roasty malts, full bodied, motor oil. finishes with boozey heat.
4.1On tap at the Stone Bistro in August 2009.
Pours a near-black with a nice tan head and a decent amount of lacing. The aroma is of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and a nice hoppiness. The taste is very similar, although everything doesn’t blend together as well with the taste as it did with the smell. The roasted malt and hops don’t quite fit together like they do in a well-designed Black IPA. The mouthfeel is moderate with fairly-large amounts of carbonation. Definitely drinkable, but a little pricey for what it is.

3.9Bottle.
Dark brown and clear with a bit of tan head. Aromas of alcohol, molasses, toasted malts, smoke, vanilla, and a hint of some dark fruit. Vanilla comes out more on the palate. Surprisingly smooth for the high alcohol, got just a bit of heat. Light bitterness, dry malty finish. Very tasty.
4.0Bottle from Healthy Spirits. Pours black with a nice tan head and a chocolate and licorice aroma. There is a hearty treacle and chocolate flavor with some anise and a dry bitter finish.
3.3bottle in brewdog bar ... thin tan lacing ... that big american malt nose ... soft sweet toffee malt ... medium carbonation ... juicy malts ... little toffee... and that american malt
4.1BrewDog Cambridge Stone Juxtaposition Black Pilsner. That was a mouthful. This is a great brew that pours out a dark brown hue with an off white head. The aroma was of roasted malts and vanilla. I also smelled a slight chocolate undertone beneath the primary aroma of the malts. It smelled very nice. It had a very nice flavor of caramel malt and hops. The hops add a strong bitterness to the brew that works well with everything else. The 10% abv is well hidden and I didn’t even notice it. This is a great beer and one that you would definitely sip slowly instead of downing. Enjoy this brew.
4.1Pours murky chocolate with brown edges and tan head. The aroma is floral hops, grapefruit, pine and then lesser amounts of black licorice, black strap molasses, earthy black tea and a mild level of burnt malts. The taste is bold with pine hop bitterness, some grapefruit and then milder notes of floral hops. By midway black licorice, black strap molasses and burnt malts creep their way into the picture. This is full flavored goodness surrounded by yum.

3.6Black pour with a loose off-white head. Fresh citrus and pine aroma with notes of juniper, dry biscuit and a very mild roastiness. Lots of grapefruit in the flavor with notes of juniper, pine, sweet tree fruit, chalky toasted biscuit, cloying honey and light molasses. Creamy, medium-full body with moderate carbonation.
4.012oz. bottle, cellar aged for one year. Interesting and pleasant aroma, roasty and very lightly sweet with notes of red grape, black olive, licorice and molasses, along with some faintly burnt grain and substantial, earthy, floral, citric hops. Clear dark brown in color, nearly black, with a very fine, light tan head. Flavor profile is quite interesting as well, with strong darkly roasty, nutty, sweet malts, notes of dark, dried fruit and a nicely balancing, drying, strong hop character, contributing plenty of bitterness, vaguely herbal, citric flavor, and finishing with lighter suggestions of black bread, tobacco, and fine dark chocolate. Low-moderate amount of effervescence on the palate, which is smooth and very gently warming, body is medium-full. Alcohol presence is minimized almost fully, which is impressive. Really a tasty experiment. I wish I had a fresh bottle to compare it to, but with the balance displayed I think a year old is just right for this stuff. Mostly I just wish I had another bottle.
3.0Thanks IBrew2or3 for the share. Pours brown with an off-white head. Nose is grass, hops, slightly roasted malts, and some caramel. Flavor is similar- messy, yet interesting. One of the better beers that BrewDog has touched.
4.3what a fun unique brew this is. it actually manages to share some qualities with Stone’s 13th (big malt, fresh hops) while also being significanylt different. sweet and intensely hoppy at the same time, dark and deep. the only difference in scoring between the 13th and this is an evr so slight spice character that isn’t bad, but takes away from the overall fresh hop onslaught just a touch...but it also has a unique dry roasted finish that the 13th and other similarly hoppy beers do not. This is a great beer and worth every penny if you can find it!"
3.7nice dark beer, head is substantial. clings to the glass, malty nose with a touch of hops. well balanced and interesting flavors letting the dark malts play a very prominent role with coffee really coming through
3.4Bottle. Pours a dark brown/black color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel and licorice aroma. Roasted malty licorice and chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty malty finish.
3.7unusual beer, its black. I smell dates and molasses. bright hoppyness, to balance with malty. full flavor, better for later in the night. tobacco in the finish along with alcohol. I like it, but its expensive.
3.3Never tried a black pilsner before. This one was pretty good. Not the best from this brewery, but still good.
3.6On tap at Stone 14th Anniversary - Aroma had some caramel notes, but mostly the grapefruit and aged-cheese-like Citra hops. The taste was exactly the same. Not a bad beer, but kind of a disappointment after I first heard about this beer. The hops dominate and stomp on a malt profile that I would really like to taste more of. What it does have going for it is that the 10% ABV isn’t nearly so detectable.
3.1As you can see from the name this is a collaboration brew between three different breweries. It had a flavour of caramell, very dark bread, sweetness, syrup, sugar, smoke, burned sugar, dill and crawfish. It had quite allot of dill which reminded my of crawfish, so maybe this would be a nice beer with this years crawfish fests?
