In this northern German style retro altbier, we’ve dialled down the dry-hops to zero, but cranked up the malt to create massive aromas. Toasty, toffee and floral notes duke it out for supremacy in the headspace of your glass.
When this alt hits your palate, the steely bitterness combines with the rich dry malt and the subtle alcohol warmth in a full throttle attack on your taste buds.

2.8The closest thing to a trad ale that Brewdog make. It makes sense why they don’t do more. Bilgey maltwater with an earthy musk. And yet also quite bland. Odd and dull.
3.6Flight from BrewDog Roppongi. Light clear brown color. Sweet but balanced malt, wood, hop and floral. Really nice sipper. Alts scare me but this is solid.
3.3September 22, 2015 - at BrewDog Clapham Junction - Keg draught (I think). With theydon_bois, lagerloather and JerCraigs. My voice rate says "BrewDog Shepherd’s Bush" but that’s clearly wrong - we were on a crawl of the Battersea area so yah, Clapham it is. Deep clear amber pour with a small drool of off-white head. Smells of scorched wood and alcohol, somehow sweet but don’t ask me how or what manner - just a bit sugary ... I suspect my palate may have been a bit fried at this point. Taste definitely more alt-on-steroids; sweet, herbal, woody with some mineral tang to it, some dried moss. Light body, solid carbonation, quick finishing, with dry herbal woody notes in the aftertaste, which is not as sweet as the actual taste. Yay for functional taste buds again!
3.3On tap at Brewdog Barcelona. Copper colour with white head. Malt and cereal aroma. Malt, sweet, caramel and cereal taste. Medium body.
3.1bottle a amber colored beer with a whtie head aroma malts citrus fruits spicy and hops flavor malts citrus fruits spicy dark fruits and bitter hops
3.1Draft - Lightly toasted grains and some caramel notes. Clear Amber with a decent white head. Toffee and some toasted malt. A little too toasty and burnt sugars but OK.
3.1Bottle from More than Beer. Hazy amber coloured with an off white head. Nose is caramel, grassy, bit of toffee. Flavour is caramel malts, toffee, light grassy hops. Medium-high carbonation and fairly dry. Maybe a bit on the sweet side for an Altbier.
2.8Aroma: malt, toffee, caramel and wood.
Taste: malt, caramel, notes of grape. Taste intensiveness below expectation.
Bittersweet aftertaste
3.1Probably keg at Leicester Dog in January 2016. Bit twiggy for The Dog, this. Slender capped ruby. Aroma of dank English wood, shrub and cherry stone. MOR big regional English flavour; Tunes, aniseed sprinkles, caramelised sugar and biscuit. Well made, but....
3.7Biscuity aroma. Frothy brown head. Nice dark brown colour. Smooth palate. Some hints of toffee.
3.6Bottle enjoyed at home
Dark, quite clear, creamy white head. Smell of caramel, hay, toffee, fruity dark malts and hints of chocolate. Moderate sweet, clean malt flavors, caramel and toffee, quite enjoyable, hints of cocoa. Moderate bitter, hay in finish
3.2Bottle at The Red Lion, Leek (Hydes) Pours a clear amber colour with a medium white head. Aroma of bready malts, toasted malts, nuts, some fruit, slight coffee and subtle spicy hops.
Taste of bready malts, toasted malts, nuts, some caramel, slight dark fruit and subtle spicy, earthy hops. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A dryish, bready malt, spicy bitterness in the finish. A good Altbier, bready, toasty, slightly fruity with good spicy hop flavours. Not amazing but decent for its style.
3.3Bottle from CBB. Candy caramel nose, ok malt, minerals. Brown-orange, low head, clear. Caramal malt, minerals, earthy hops, nice balance and bitterness. Somehow nice, though not really special.
2.7Probably the only brewdog to date not enjoyed dark murky plummy drinkable but not pleasent
3.9Bottle 0,33L. Had this one under the name "Prototype Alt Amber". Clear, amber red color with small, frothy, light brown head. Aroma of nutty malts, espresso, milk chocolate, caramel, toffee. Medium bitter taste with caramel and nuts. It’s actually very bitter, although there is only 45 IBU. Light to medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation, metallic finish. I’ve tried some German alt beers before, but none of them wasn’t even close to this one.
3.6Bottle from my ex-colleagues. Thanks! Pours clear copper with nice thick white head. Aroma is candy, smoke, yeast. Taste is sweet with malt, candy, smoke, yeast.
3.4(backlog Xmas 2015) 33cl, Maruhn. - Holding back (for Brewdog) rendition of a dry toffee Alt, just nicely hopped to fit the style to let the sandblasted precise amber malts (dry toast, toffee, wood bough, red berry peel) shine, showing great lupuline restraint from the punk renewers. Maybe ventures into ESB territory, but sign me up for ESB/Alt crossovers anytime.
2.6Bottle. Hazy amber color with tiny white head. Aroma - Malty, raisins, toffee. Taste - Bittersweet, malt, caramel, bread.
1.8Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer.
3.2Ciemna brunatna barwa.
3.0From Labirratorium. In Teku glass. After dinner. Nutty, some caramel. High carbonated feeling, more than good. Dry end, with lots of traditional hops. Very classic for brewdog.
3.1Hazy, ordinary light brown liquid, average head. Aroma of yeast. Light body, strong carbonation. Taste is sour and a bit bitter; very dry.
2.8Botella. Clásica alt Alemana. Nada a destacar. Correcta dentro de su estilo. Tostada ni amarga ni dulce.
3.1Amber hazy. Small bubbles and remaining nice lace. Quite plain: roasted malts perhaps some caramel hints. Bitter hops. Dry end. I believe it is not a bad beer, but not my style.
3.1Bottle. Hazy brown color with tan head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, quite delicate. Taste is the same. Quite delicate. Nearly a true-to-style Alt.
2.9Murky brown with almost no head. Toffee, malty stuff, raisins, some wood. Taste is sweet and bitter, two dimensional as every Alt, some sour grapes. Finish of some roast. A mix between roasty and light fruity. Awkward but not bad.
3.5Bottle. Dark brown Amber, offwhite lace. Herbal hops, roast, Bready malt. Chewy, very pleasant.
