BrewDog Clown King

BrewDog Clown King

bottled and keg, special
The infamous Clown King is in town, with his twisted circus of salaciousness. Ready to corrupt the senses, he’s brought together two show-stopping acts in a riot of flavour and aroma. In this two-ring extravaganza, an imperial pale ale and a barley wine come crashing together, and left standing in the sawdust is an American Barley Wine.

This freak of nature might be red, but that’s where the similarities with a normal clown’s nose end - on Clown King’s nose you’ll find all the fun of the fair, with caramel and toasted marshmallow aromas, but also raisin and dried fruit. With toasty malt and sweet dark fruit flavours, and a smooth, chewy mouthfeel, you’ll be lulled into a false sense of security, before the Clown King springs up and flings a bucket of spicy, fruity hops right in your face.

With such complexity and flavour packed in, like a tiny car full of clowns, you’ll soon be on your feet, joining in with the thunderous applause, when suddenly the Clown King is gone, leaving only a fleeting sense of warmth, and a desire to follow him onto the next town, where the show will begin all over again.

Roll up, the King is back. And he's brimming with bitter-sweet bold flavours. Clown King delivers chewy toffee malt, overlaid with a driving bitterness, sticky fruit character, and a surprisingly light finale.

2.1 7/20 quite a dull taste, caramel little vanilla, then an aggressive alcohol burn, doesn't really taste like beer
3.8 Wheat wine by BrewDog, draught at BrewDog Brussels. Creamy, regularly shaped, yellowish-tinged egg-white, dense head, lightly hazy deep copper red robe with vermillion hue. Aroma of hard butterscotch, candy apple coating, dried prunes, fresh figs, cognac, white port, wet toast, pine nuts, whisky, brown bread, pumpkin seeds. Sweet onset with light sourish accent, candied figs and yellow raisins, blue plums, refined but still too stinging carbonation, full and rather creamy body. Caramelly malt sweetishness, rich and thick with a thin toasty bitterish tail accentuated by brandy-ish alcohol, a bit astringent in the end but tempered by the malt sweetness; some late spicy hoppiness as well, but clearly subordinate to the malts. Nice wheat wine, but a bit clean and 'young',lacking a bit in the depth this style can offer; should improve with further bottle aging.
2.2 Can at home. A deep dark brown in the glass and quite a good head. The first sip brought the words "slightly fishy" to mind and that was not what I was expecting. Luckily that disappeared after a couple of sips and must have been something from the canning process. The taste was rich malt and not as sweet as I feared. The problem was that there wasn't really much taste. It was a bit insipid. The alcohol was very well hidden in what was, to me, a cross between a barley wine and a Belgian beer. The last in my collection from Fanzine and I have to say I am glad I cancelled.
3.8 330ml can from Fanzine issue 7. Pours clear dark amber red with a small beige head dissipating quickly. Aroma of malts, raisin, toffee, fruit cake, alcohol. Taste is sweet, malts, toffee, caramel, raisin, dried fruits, fruit cake, pine, alcohol. Medium bodied, smooth, soft carbonation. Nice one.
3.3 Can fanzine. Pretty tasty - toffee apple, caramel. Pretty heady alcohol. Sharp but smooth finish
3.4 Can from BrewDog Fanzine Pours reddish with quickly disappearing head. Aroma is bit of grapes, red fruits and raisin. And alcohol. Tastes sticky, red fruits, marshmallow, not that high on alcohol. It's fine, but with this voltage the show should have been more complex.
4.5 Can from fanzine. Medium ruby caramel brown with a thin tan head in a ring. Scent is somewhat strong notes of lightly musky, dusty, old ale. Grapefruit. Toffee. Cocoa. Licorice. Taste is big, intensive raisin, caramel, and whisky cask. Oily. Somewhat intensive bitterness alongside warming ethanol, maybe 60 ibu. Finish is a little bit sticky and residing flavors of rye, resin, ethanol, and bitterness. Very great.
3.5 33cl can, fanzine edition. #7. @NBF 2018. Pours mahogany coloured with an small white head. Aroma has raisin, plums. Warmth, bit stingy. maybe to fresh, guess wld be better when aged
4.4 Drink at Btewdog in Stirling. Tap Clear dark orange colour. Nice persistent beige ring. Small aroma of alcool and grain. Taste of burn toffee and pells of orange. Overall a good and different usual style.
3.7 Can from BrewDog Fanzine. Very excited to receive a barley wine in Fanzine. Clear dark auburn with a huge beige frothy head. Sweet aroma of toffee and stone fruit. Tastes sweet but sadly not sweet enough! Toffee apple, figs, bitter stone fruit. Mildly disappointing. Earlier Rating: 7/18/2018 Total Score: 3.8
3.6 14Jul2018 Intense caramel, molasses, sweet grain and cereal malts, biscuit. Clear, dark gold, tiny, creamy, white head. Medium sweet. More sweet grain and cereal malts, caramel, molasses, toasted brioche, light bitterness coming up, soft carbonation, full bodied. Decent. Keg at BrewDog, Soho.

4.0 Wypite przed kilkoma laty, nie jest już produkowane… Ocena przepisana z notatek.
4.0 Kicsi, gyorsan elillanó hab, barna szín. Gabonás, meggyes, szilvás, karamelles illat. Erős édes karamelles, gabonás ízekkel indít, majd meggyes, szilvás, szedres aromák emelkednek fel, lecsengéskor pirosgyümölcsös és kissé konyakos, kesernyés komponensek bukkannak elő. Nagyon testes, enyhén szénsavas és közepesen keserű. Intenzív és gazdag ízvilágú, jól összerakott, szuper sör.
4.2 [Leżak 4 lata] W smaku bardzo słodko, multum karmelu i suszonych owoców, nieco miodu. Bogato i intensywnie. W smaku podobnie - intensywnie karmelowe, także suszone owoce, nieco kwaśności owocowej - jakby winogrona. Sporo ciała, goryczka max średnia, wszystko doskonale ułożone, ukryty alkohol, sporo ciała. Warto było trzymać!
3.7 Bottle: Deep golden to copper coloured, hazy, small - but stable - tanned foamy layer; moderate sweet-raisiny and malty (molasses?) nose with a tinge of wood/vanilla and sherry, hops in the background, but hardly detectable; moderate to solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied, quite smooth; warming alcohol in the sweet fruity-malty and bitter finish. Very good, surely not too exciting...
4.8 0,33l bottle. Hazy copper/red colour with a quickly shrinking small tan head. Aroma: Oh my. Very intense. Raisin, honey, caramel with coffee notes but also has a strong matured cheese and a sourish fruity tone. Also has some serious rum/cognac caracteristics. Very complex and strong, I’m impressed. Taste: Very sweet thick malty start (banana bread) with a light pleasent bitter (coffee) mouthfeel. Very spicey (vanilla, clove, black pepper) and has a real tasty and silky rum tone with nuts. Creamy texture. Full body with soft carbonation. Long, strong bitter finish. Amazingly complex maybe a bit messy from the dozens of caracters but than this should be the worst problem of mankind. Great beer.
3.5 (bottle, 33cl) Hazy, amber to brown colour with a short and tanned foamy layer. Sweet malty aroma with notes of dried and ripe fruits, such as raisins and dates, accompanied by hints of caramel and alcohol. Moderately sweet and mildly bitter flavour, full bodied with a soft carbonation. Delicately sugary dark malty start with present notes of dried fruits, slightly vinous taste with spicy notes and herbal hops in the background; sweet-bitter, mildly vinous fruity finish with warming alcoholic notes. 16.XI.16
2.9 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer.
3.0 Bottle. Dry soy, spice aroma. Ruddy brown, no head. Sweet, roast sugary, soy, Selery salt. Meh.
3.2 Hazy dark amber with amost no head. Aroma is cedar wood, dark fruits, some wheat, caramel. Taste is intense bitterness, with intense syrup sweetness. Too heavy for me. Oily and heavy. Low carbonation. Phew.
3.6 Hazy amber reddish color with almost no head. Aroma has mostly dried fruits like dates and raisins. Taste starts sweet, sugary, with caramel and dried fruits. Earthy bitterness on the finish. Medium body and carbonation. Slightly boozy for my taste but overall it’s quite good.
2.7 (bottle) hazy deep amber colour with a frothy light-beige head. aroma of brown sugar and cherry juice, with a hint of caramel, some soy sauce and baked apples. flavour is mostly caramel, brown sugar and treacle, heavily sweet, with a light touch of roasted malts and a medium-bitter ethanolic finish. heavy-bodied with soft carbonation.
2.5 Aroma: not very intense. Caramel, malts, hints of honey, dried fruits, raisins, alcohol. Appearance: deep amber color, very hazy. Thin beige head with low retention. No Brussels’ lacing. Taste: medium sweetness, low bitterness, no sourness. Palate: full body, oily-to-creamy sticky texture, low carbonation, very long warming semi-sweet finish of malts, caramel, raisins, dried fruits, with overtones of wood, alcohol. Overall: good appearance, not very intense aromas but a lot of complex flavor here. Very hazy and dense. Strong beer. This is my first Barley Wine, so i’m in shock right now.
3.9 Bottle. Pours a murky orange brown beer with a nice off white head on top. Aroma is malty, caramel, sugary and rather boozy. Also some woody notes in there of some sort. Flavor is fairly bitter, more hoppy than malty. The alcohol is noticeable, but not too overly sweet. Some herbal notes in the background. Softly carbonated, fairly easy drinking. Very nice.
4.6 Bottle shared at home. Hazy dark amber colour, small white lacing. Nose is strong dried fruits. Taste is medium sweetness, low bitterness. Rasinins and other dried fruits. The only downside is the strong alcolic feeling. Complex and lovely.
4.1 Bottiglia, fermento cipro 08/06/2016. All’apparenza si presenta come una tunica di frate con venature da pelo di volpe. Note di malto, caramello, liquirizia, gorgonzola, noce, mandorla, prugna, lampone e qualche lieve nota di luppolo. In bocca si presenta setosa, caramello, liquirizia, frutta sotto spirito ed una possente nota alcolica alla bocca dello stomaco. Molto particolare.
4.0 330 ml bottle. Dark brown colour with unstable head off. Aroma is sweet, malts, wood. Taste of caramel, higher % of alcohol, light fruit notes. I love this style of beer.
