A fury of dots and dashes come trough the receiver. The translator turns in amazement. "A Zero IBU IPA by two breweries separated by sea?" His commanding officer lays a grizzled hand on his shoulder as his eyes narrow toward the horizon. "No bastard ever won a war by playing it safe, son."
The International Arms Race is a new type of battle collaboration between hardcore American craft brewery Flying Dog and BrewDog.
’Zero IBU IPA’ is an ale brewed with berries and herbs.
2 IPAs that rock.
Hunt them both down and see which beer you think deserves to win the battle and the war.

2.2Aroma - has eucalyptus, floral/medicinal herbs, some honey notes, and spices that are confusing.
Appearance - body color is an orange amber; the liquid is slightly hazed with decent nucleation; off-white head sets up at about 1/2" and quickly subsides into a ring, and eventually totally dies out.
Taste - initial flavor is Ricola cough drop, with a little eucalyptus. There are other confusing spices - it seems to be a compilation of things like elderberries, honey, sage, coriander, and just bizarre combinations. Nice for an incense, not for a beer. Unpleasant.
Palate - body is light; texture thin; the carbonation is average; the finish is herbaceous and medicinal mostly eucalyptus ~ not a fan.
Label says a "Zero IBU IPA" ~ it’s a S/H/V no doubt, nothing about this remotely touches on anything IPA. It has no re-purchase factor to me at all. I got duped. Sucks out loud!
2.0Very slightly hazy bronze and copper coloured body with almost no head at all - a few large bubbles on top. Aroma of pine, spruce, juniper berries, figs and hints of sage - very interesting. Medium-bodied; Assertive herbal and very aggresively showing sage and rosemary with a little alcohol and medicinal tastes coming through at the end. Aftertaste shows much more restraint than flying dog’s version, but still a very herbal and woodsy flavour that is a pure gruit. Overall, not a very good beer, period. Tasting this horizontally, I prefered this version over the American Flying Dog’s version, since this is a bit more herbal and showing some less aggressive flavours making it more of a natural flavour instead of being forced. Regardless, this isn’t a great beer and isn’t worth finding or trying at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle adjacent to the American (Flying Dog) version of this beer on 23-March-2014 at home in Washington with this specific 33 cL bottle purchased at Half Time in Poughkeepsie, New York on 26-December-2012 for US$4.99 (Batch #164, best before 23-May-2013).
2.5Rating from the memory banks... Bottle from the Brewdog online shop. Developed a weird, ropey sediment in the bottle... Pours hazy amber, thin white head. Aromas were herbal and minty, light spice. Taste went a bit medicinal. Interesting experiment, but not very nice.
Drukket hjemme 11 Jun 13. Gyldenbrun. Lavt luftig skum. God aroma av nåletrær. Smaken er skog: Einer, furu. Blir for ensforming. Mer original enn god.
2.8Flaška: Honeyish-golden, a bit unclear, quickly collapsing loose off-white head, sweet herbal-spicy nose - some caramel detectable - very similar to cough-syrup; moderate to solid bitter and sweet flavour, medium bodied; warming sweet-bitter finish. A Jägermeister-like brew, who really needs such "beers"...
2.8Pours hazy amber into a pint glass. Tan head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet and sour herb satchel aromas (yarrow, lavender). Medium bodied with lavender and twigs front to back. Lasting perfume finish. The marketing gimmick of a zero IBU IPA definitely brings it down a notch or two.
3.0Bottled. Hazy deep orangeish amber colour with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma is spices, citrus, spruce and caramel. Flavour is spices, citrus some herbs and mild notes of spruce. Balanced. IMO a bit more spicy than the FD/BD version.
... Aún me lo estoy preguntando.
3.0(Bottle) Amber colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, spicy nose with ginger, honey, heather, clove, ginger-bread cake, dark bread, orange peel and a touch of mint. Malty, spicy taste with notes of ginger, cardamom, clove, anise, rye bread, orange and a perfumy finish with low bitterness. Medium body, with a certain herbal sweetness. Strange beer, but quite interesting. More interesting than brilliant actually. But quite enjoyable.
3.2Dark amber/copper, small white head. Low carbonation. Floral aroma, nose of spices (anise). Bitter taste with sweet notes. Weird beer, but interesting experiment.
3.5Collaboration bryg mellem brewdog og Flying dog. 7,5 %.
3.6Bottle side by side
Pours a bit darker than flying dog no real foam
I like this label better
Smell is sweeter , and fuller than FD
Taste is bit sweeter ( sugar ) and slightly less weird than FD . So this is less ’ special ’ but in a way better . Not in the aftertaste , wich is to perfumed , but i think brewdog won , even though its close , they mostly won cause of the better atrwork , i guess ;-)
3.133cl bottle. Pours a amber clear color with a small off white head. Fruity aroma with a sweet background. Smooth and slightly sweet flavor with a decent dark fruit and herb backbone. Medium body and medium carbonation.
3.1Deep copper with a disappearing beige head. Smells of sweet Unfermented malt, lots of spices like ginger and cinnamon, with some perfume and caramel. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Sweet with a spicy finish. Body of caramel with pepper and herbs. Lots of ginger in the taste with nice spices and a dry finish with a lingering liquorish. A decent work that hides the 7.5% well.
3.3330 ml bottle. Deep copper. Clear. Fizzy tall head that falls down quickly, like soda leaving only a little around the edges. Spicy herbal aroma. No hops in sight, but the beer is well balanced, though leaning towards the sweet. Rich malty flavours that are cut with a nice flavourful perfumey herbal note. Interesting experiment, but not really an IPA.
2.30,33L bottle from Vinmonopolet. Dark golden/bronze colour, with almost no head. Aroma: Gingerbreaddough, spicy and malt. Taste: ginger (ale), spicy, caramel malt. If I had tasted this blind, I would have guessed it was a ginger ale. Too much ginger in this, and kinda....dull.
2.3Bottle from BarleyWine, Copenhagen - Gold pour small white head. Very herbal nuances in both taste and aroma, some dark fruit and woddyness. Certainly different to the norm, but didn’t get on well with this.
3.4Bottle. Bronze with a small head and quite lively on opening. Ginger and spices dominate leaving a lasting aftertaste. Weird and not one of their best.
2.7Amber color, small head. Aroma is thin with some malty, sweety with some sour notes. Taste is smoother than “0 IBU IPA” from Flying Dog. Herbal notes are low that makes this beer definitely more drinkable than Flying Dog. This one is better balanced. IMO Brew Dog is the winner of International Arms Race.
2.8Color: amber beer with small carbonation and small white foam. Smell: coriander and tomato. Taste: sweet and spices taste. Aftertaste: dry fruity taste.
2.2330ml bottle from Vinmonopolet bestillingsutvalget. Diminishing off-white head to a bright, golden-brown body. Dotted lacing. The aromas are reminiscence of dough with spicy herbs, ginger and clove (pepperkakedeig). Ginger, bread and raisin to the taste buds. Sweet and dry endnotes. Masked alcohol. Flat in the mouth. Alright as a kind of soft drink, but I won’t buy it again (Tromsø, 27.07.2013).
3.2Bottle, OP. Body is orange with debris and no foam. Aroma is spicy, little bit sour. Taste is orange fruits, fruits, floral, honey, herbs such as elderflower, juniper. Light bitterness, probably from the herbs. Interesting beer. Body is medium, oily, with light carbonation.
2.6Bottle from BarleyWine, Copenhagen. Pours golden with a white head. Malty and dark fruits aroma. Taste is sweet dark fruits, herbal and some alcohol notes. Light bitter finish.
2.6Pours deep orange almost red orange with head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is sweet floral but medicinal almost. Some sediment in bottle. Taste on initial sip was full of carbonation but this reduces. The beer is a strange one that almost tastes like a sweet dry white wine. It is very dry and bitter on the palate. This is an IPA thats missing some balance and it is odd. Still there is something I like about it which I cannot put my finger on.
2.0ivory white head that disappears fast without lacing. amber clear colour. aroma of clove, and clove, and even more clove and some detergent/dish washing soap. taste of soap and .. surprise .. clove! medium carbonation and body. makes me wonder if in the pre-hops era beers with gruut tasted like this .. i hope not! imho the best thing about this beer is the nice label ;) bottle 33 cl
3.133cl bottle from Vinmonopolet, Vika. Pours clear amber with an off-white head. Herbal aroma with ginger, caramel and something that reminds me of common wormwood. Quite sweet and flavoursome, but a bit strange. Certainly a bit different, but I’m not entirely convinced. Quite decent brew, but nothing I feel an urge to drink again.
2.617.06.2013. 0,33l Bottle. Vinmonopolet Bergen Storsenter. Golden colour with white head. Aroma of berries and herbs. Lots of herds and other spycy flavours. Mild malty body. Strange bitterness. Its dry and bitter but its not hops. Good flavours of hearb, but I cant determine what herbs it is. At the end its more like wood or spruce with flavours of some kind af tree or resin acids. Dry tounge. Interresting beer.
