BrewDog IPA Is Dead - Citra

BrewDog IPA Is Dead - Citra

The Pacific North West of America is home to the Citra hop. America is not just about cheer leaders, a silly version of football, elastic top jeans and cheeseburgers. They grow remarkable hops and Citra is a killer example of this, embodying all that is good about American hops and then some. A relatively new hop on the block, it may even seduce you into thinking the American Dream is not just a catch phrase to sell movies and elect Presidents. Fearfully hard to resist, this beer is loaded with brash citrus, grapefruit orange, hints of resinous pine and touches of black currant. Devilishly moreish. I am a little bit too obsessed with this beer for my own good.

3.6 Keg at Brewdog Birmingham; clear dark amber pour with a thin broken white head, citrus and pine aroma, taste had some skunk along with pine fresh toilet duck, well balanced bitterness, some green tea.
3.5 Tap at Brewdog Birmingham. Poured a clear medium amber with a round white head and a little broken lace. The aroma is grassy Citra. The flavour is moderate bitter with a grassy orange citrus light spice Citra hop palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation. Nice, but they skimped on the Citra!
3.9 Keg at Bottle Cap Bar. Clear amber body with a thin off-white cap. Lively carbonation. Thick lacing marks. Aroma of lemon, passionfruit and grapefruit. Flavour of sweet biscuit and lemon drops. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. A lovely IPA. Citra FTW.
3.3 Keg at Brewdog. Dark amber orange, hazy, small white head. Aroma is pungent orange, rotten fruit mustiness. Body is medium, slightly foamy, low carbonation. Taste is very earthy, floral, smooth toffee malt. Fairly average, citra not being showcased the way it can be here.
4.0 Bottle at home. Pours amber, nose and taste are grapefruit, orange, sweet citrus.
3.7 Bottle from the brewery, drunk at home 11th June 2011 with tashi - IPA is Dead set #1 tasting. Lovely orange & grapefruit flavours. Little did I know back then how much I would go on to love this hop once I moved to California!
3.5 Backlog, vertical tasting of all 4 in the Beer Temple (tap), shortly after release. Golden to amber color, dense white head. Aroma’s: resin, citrus, piney, even acidic retronasal. Flavor is bitter with a moderate citrussy sourness. Medium bodied. Finishes with malt/grain and moderate bitter
3.1 Backlog, tried at a Brewdog tasting. Bottle from Systembolaget. One of the weaker that was offered in this 4-pack (Citra, Nelson, Sorachi and Bramling.)
Geruch intensiv malzig, fruchtig herb. Geschmack sehr mild fruchtig bitter nach exotischen Früchten.
3.6 Bottle from mane liquor. Had this one a while back forgot to rate. Nice orange pour with a frothy white head. Nose has loads of grapefruit and orange peel - citra hop specialty! Taste is a fruit bowl backed by a dry sweet malt bitterness. Pretty good ipa.
3.5 Bottle 33cl. A hazy golden colour with an off-white head. An aroma of mal, caramel, orange and grapefruit. The taste is medium sweet and bitter.
4.2 330ml bottle at Brew at the Bog. A golden pour, delicious white head. Superb blast of hops in the nose, orange notes and a slight caramel taste. Delicious.
3.7 330 ml bottle sampled in 2011. Pretty clear, golden body with a nice, dense off-white head. Fine citric aroma a hint of caramel malt. Flavor is nice and refreshing citric fruit, pine and balanced bitterness on a fine malt base. Hint of caramel. Medium body and bitter aftertaste. A nice one.

3.9 19th February 2011 Hazy amber beer, little white head. Crispy palate. Orange and orange marmalade. Trace of grapefruit. Minerally sharpness. Gets a little sweeter toward the semi dry finish. Refreshing fruity IPA.
3.9 33 cl bottle. Originally rated on 20110409. Pours clear copper color with a small head. Aroma of hops, exotic fruits, lemon, grass and caramel. Flavor of caramel, exotic fruits, hops and malts. Nice.
3.8 Bottle shared by esp0r July 2011, thanks a lot. Hazy dark orange, big beige head. Aroma of citrus - of course - and grass, pine, orange peel. Taste of citrus fruits, caramel, hazelnut I think, and tea. Pretty good stuff!
4.1 Botella de 330ml. Vaso Shaker. (Notas). Color ámbar anaranjado claro y apariencia algo velada. 330ml bottle. Shaker glass. (From my notes). Light orangish amber color. Chill haze. Yellowish, medium bubbled, froth. Fairly good retention. Intense hops & citrics both in flavors & aromas. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Texture is oily but light. A very refreshing beer been missed before finish it.
3.5 Bottled. Pours slightly hazy amber with a medium sized off-white head. Leaving a fair lacing. Nose of grapefruit, lemon and caramel. Sweet flavor with citrus, orange and grapefruit and caramel. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. Ends up more dry and decent bitter.
3.5 Bottle from Systembolaget, reviewed in the summer of 2011. Lots of citrus and also some fruits in both the smell and taste. Interesting hops that makes it on it’s own.
4.8 Wow, amazing such a shame they don’t make this anymore probably a good thing for me though....? have recently tried the Mikeller Citra and it doesn’t come close
3.6 Hazy orange with a frothy white head. Aroma of pineapple and grapefruit. Oily texture, medium carbonation and bitter aftertaste. Ends dry. On the tongue it’s fruity with a lot of resin.
4.0 (Draught@Pikkulintu, rated 2011-08-09) Murky copper with a firm head. Lots of exotic fruit, citrus, and resiny pine in the nose. Softly fruity and caramely malty flavor with citrusy bitterness in the finish. BrewDog house flavor is present, but luckily remains in the background. This, along with the newer HC IPA, restored some of my confidence in this brewery.
Slutsats: riktigt god.
3.5 Bottle from El Irlandés. Batch #438. Pours a hazy bronze color with a light reddish tint. It is crowned by a medium white head that laces very well in my glass. Aroma is of course hoppy with lots of grapefruit and maybe some passionfruit. I get some hay notes. Citra hops are more fruity than expected. Taste is reasonably bitter (granted it’s not a hop bomb) with more grapefruit and resinous notes. The malty backbone gives subtle grainy hints but you get hop bitterness from start to finish. This India Pale Ale is medium bodied with a light carbonation and a bitter and lingering finish. It showcases the Citra hops well. That said, it’s a simple IPA without all the nuances of other BrewDog’s beers.
3.6 Into the glass, a red-golden beer pours with coarse-pored foam. It smells fabulous of aroma hops, very citrus-like, fruity, slight pine aroma. Starts very hoppy, citrusy, tangy acidity, very fruity, with lots of pine aroma again. The middle part is hoppy, floral, slightly sweet and very fruity. Goes into a fruity-sweet finish with lots of aroma hops and some pine wood!
3.5 Hazy orange with a medium white head. Fruity with flowery tones. Malt, fruit, bitter and flowers. Medium to full body with a long, bitter finish.
