4.2Fairly good looking beer, nothing really in terms of head unfortunately. What was there disappeared fast but of course the density of the beer and the alcohol content explain this sufficiently. Nose is a little disappointing for a beer of this complexity - it’s all in the taste really which doesn’t disappoint. It’s multilayered in a pleasing way and is something that quite a few brewdog beers fail to achieve! Sweet dark toffee, caramel and really nice latte notes which are subtle enough so as not to dominate. Velvety texture is sliced through with warm alcohol and then relatively clean grapefruity, hoppy bitterness.
3.52009 vintage, bottle. Okay it smells not so good, like mushy cardboard, but it tastes dandy, a nice warming bottle with hints of whiskey and nice sweetness balanced by alcohol heat, in the dead of winter this would be a treat.
4.3Bottle, shared with Bergen Beer Geek Tasting Crew. Pours a slightly hazy deep brown body with a tiny off-white head. Nose is deep caramel, syrup, whisky, molasses, butterscotch and hints of raisins and sweet malts. Taste is booze, whisky, molasses, burnt sugar, caramel, cream, hints of raisins, wood and smoke. Smooth, full body and soft carbonation. Majestic stuff. A truly great sipper, and a beer wish I had a couple of cases of, so I could age it and enjoy it on a regular basis.
3.7August 2010. From bottle. Dark amber color with a shortlived white ehad. Aromas of caramel, roasted malt, grass, hay and flowers. Flavors of dark fruit, caramel, alcohol and malt. Not bad at all.
3.008.06.2013, 0,33l bottle sampled @ BBGTC tasting:
Almost no head. Aroma is slightly oxidated, caramel malts, toffee, grass, butterscotch, almond essence, warming alcohol, dark sugar, oak. Taste is slightly sweet and dry, caramel malts, oak, toffee, dark sugar, burnt caramel, grass, cocoa. Dry mouthfeel. Fair enough.
3.3330 ml bottle. Clear reddish amber body with a small, dense beige head. Aroma feels like sweet caramel malt, dry fruit and warming alcohol. Flavor is sweet malt, dry fruit and quite bitter. Medium body with a sweet and bitter aftertaste. Com si, com sa.
3.8Cloudy light brown with a small off-white head, somewhat viscous. Aroma is coriander, dates, brown sugar, orange peel, Grand Marnier. Slightly oily mouthfeel, sweet with a somewhat fruity/citrus bitterness on the finish and some booziness. Taste is orange peel, whiskey, oak, dates, sugar.
3.8Pours a rusty brown. The nose is date, raisin, allspice, red fruit and booze. The flavor is red fruit, plum, date fruit cake with warm spices and finishes with a whisky and oak kick.
3.5Bottle 0.33l at Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Batch 243, bottled on 07052009. Colour is clear dark copper with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Whiskey, sweetness, caramel and hints of alcohol.
3.9Rich caramel with a light peat, carmalized brown sugars and some cherry. Alcohol is at a level that is very enjoyable. mouthfeel is slightly sticky on the back end, full bodied for sure. deep dark reddish hue to the body.
i dig it.
3.712 oz. bottle shared by DrSilverworm. Pours a hazy reddish/orange/amber color with no head at all. The aroma is heavy on the caramel and toffee malts with a hint of hops and some background wood. The flavor is more sweet caramel/toffee malts, some ripe fruitiness comes through, there is still some boozy alcohol with just a touch of earthy bitterness to the finish. One of the more drinkable beers I’ve had from BrewDog (certainly due to the absence of the overpowering peated whiskey notes).
4.0Medium brown body with a fully diminishing off-white head. The aroma is mostly malty, lots of caramel, roasted malts, red fruits and clear whisky cask hints, with some hoppy too. Flavor is sweet, not excessively and well balanced with some light bitterness, very long duration. The aging produced a medium body, complex and warming. Soft carbonation, i really enjoyed this one.
3.6Bottle to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Looks a semi-transparent caramel with thin off-white lacing. Smells of caramel malt and hops with a touch of he Speyside barrels. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Solid stuff.
4.1A - Murky red-brown with a finger of frothy khaki-tan head. Fades normal.
S - Sweet caramel and caramelized malts, brown sugar, oak, vanilla, whisky, citrus hops, dark fruits, some booze.
T - Sweet caramel malts, caramelized and brown sugars, vanilla, oak, whisky, dark fruits, citrus hops, some hop bitterness, some booze.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a sweet and warming finish.
D - Nice big barrel aged barleywine. Great overall balance.
3.8Bottle. Pours hazy copper with a small white head that Is mostly lacing. The aroma Is boozy with some big caramel. The taste is on the sweet caramel flavor with minimal booze.
5.0I got an 2009. The flavor started off strong. Almost seemed like it would be overwhelming. But then the malts took over. It smoothed out by the third sip.. As its a few years old the hops had simmered down now. The pour was dark, with a lil bit o head that sent lines down into the glass. One of the better BWs ive had.
3.7In short: A straightforward sweet malt bomb (sugary crunchy caramel and toffee) with a nice balance. Unexpectedly drinkable. Nice.
How: Bottle 330ml. Consumed when a little over 2 years after bottling (bottled 07/08/09)
The look: Cloudy brown-burgundy body topped by a small beige head leaving lots of lacings on the glass
In long: Nose is very sweet malts (sugar pie smell) with a surprising good amount of hops that come through as tobacco leafs with wooden notes. Taste is a whole lot of big crunchy malts with crunch caramel and crunchy toffee along with a pastry sensation. No fruity flavors here or anything like that, basically this beer tastes like a commercial sugar pie in-a-box from the grocery store. The malt bill is simple but pleasant, and the hoppy finish does provide some kind of balance. No alcohol presence whatsoever. This is usually really not my type of beer, but it is so surprisingly drinkable that at the end I thought it was rather enjoyable. And drinking beer like I do should be considered an art, because in the morning if you look at all the empties scattered around my living room it is actually an artistic display about hopelessness and confusion.
3.1Pours a copper/amber color with an off-white head. Nose is somewhat oxidized, but still plenty of sweet sugar and malt aromas. Toffee, caramel, brown sugar, and a hint of dark fruit. Light smoke/peat notes, maybe a hint of fruit and alcohol. The flavor is sweet and lightly boozy. Caramel, toffee, and a bit of brown sugar. Light peatiness, some oak, and a hint of cardboard. Not as good as the newer version.
3.4Bottle shared by durwoodx. Thanks Darrell!
This barleywine is hazy and brownish orange in color. There is approximately an inch of head that generates a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is clearly that of barleywine, with scents of alcohol, sweet malt and caramels. The tastes follows suit. The beer lacks the complexity that can make a beer of this genre intriguing and irresistible. The body is a bit thinner than I would prefer, with a solid carbonation level. Overall, a decent beer and worth a try if you are a fan of the style. Ideal for sharing, as it’s definitely best enjoyed in small quantities.

3.37/7/12. Shared at my going away tasting by Tim. Nicely sweet aroma and flavor with bits of malt and hop. Not bad.
3.6Thanks Tim and Rachel! Deep orange pour with a white head. Aroma of whiskey, sugar malts, light fruits. Flavor is similar once again with these beers with touch of iodine. Not bad at all.
3.733 cl bottle @ Pikkulintu. Batch 243: bottled 07.05.2009, no BBE info
Aroma is heavy and sweet with ripe fruits, some strawberries, woody notes, hints of harsh malt and sourness. Flavour is sweet with malt, some ripe fruits, woody notes and hints of berries. At the beginning whisky stings a little but it turns into smoky towards the finish.
4.1Aroma has licorice and toffee. Colour is brown. Head leaves bit lacing. Taste has also licorice, roasted toffee, some herbs, malts. Long and thick flavor. Fullbodied, soft, light carbonation. Overall has nuances and rich aroma and taste, well balanced. nice beer.
3.917th July 2009
Cloudy red - brown beer. Sweet rich malt provides a heady mix of Port wine and Cherry Brandy! Then sweetish toffee - caramel. Touch of peach and other yellow fruits. Finishes with sweetish hops and a little aniseed alcohol. Nice mix of flavours!
3.7bottle from the Greg Yoder collection. Pours an opaque mahogoney color with sweet candy sugar in the nose first sip is huge sweet, malty flavors with a little oak, vanilla, cotton candy, corn sugar and figs. finish is sweet with caramelly goodnes. nice stuff.
4.0Bottle. Batch 406 bottled on 2/15/11. Label says 2010 and 13.8% ABV. Maple pour with an extremely short lived beige head. No lacing. Dark brown sugar aroma. Full flavor but unusual. I get strong dark licorice in my mouth with sweetness. Maple flavors come forward but that could be residual effects from my contemplating the color. there’s some hop and roastiness flavors coming through now, along with booze. The brown sugar comes forward after the sip is gone. Interesting. Complex is too string of a word. I’d stick with unusual...but good.
3.9Bottle - 330ml. Dark amber body with an average beige frothy head. Complex malty/hoppy aroma with fruity, woody, and some subtle vanilla hints. Robust hoppy taste with fruity and piney notes. Ends with a long, strong, warming bitter finish. Very well done!
4.1Dated 07/2009. Muddy caramel with scant beige head / Nose of cooked fruit and bourbon / Medium to full body, sweet and somewhat syrupy, but with some hop balance, and long finish / Flavors of caramel, coconut, cooked orange and grapefruit, dates, raisins, oak, and bourbon / An interesting, mellow old thing, possibly lacking the brighter flavor profile of the best, but still a treat.
3.3Tap at Max’s. Pours clear tawny with no head. Aroma is spruce and herbal hops, caramel and cookie malt, spicy alcohol, dates and plums. Flavor is juniper/spruce, heavy malt, light alcohol, dark fruity esters, medium bitterness, light smoky and peaty whiskey with a dry finish. Full body, medium warmth, and light carbonation.
