BrewDog Mix Tape 8

BrewDog Mix Tape 8

keg and bottled, special

An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.

Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.

Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

3.7 Bottle at home from Brewdog online, pulled out from the back of the cellar. A lightly hazed sticky amber / orange coloured pour with a fading light tan head. Aroma is sweet toffee, woody , mint, brown sugars, brandy, boozey fruit pudding. Little age and jammy fruits on the nose as well. Flavour is composed of very sweet sticky earthy toffee, burnt toffee, boozy cognac, whiskey, jammy fruits and boozzy cakey malts. A little bitter woody tannin in the finish. Palate is medium sweet and sticky, lowish carbonation, viscous.. Held up pretty well with age.
3.6 Unclear, ruby red colored, small off white non lasting head. Aroma is of caramel, dried fruit, some spice, bit vinous and more wood, leather, boozy. Taste is very sweet malt and caramel, some toffee, dried fruits, some spice, leather, bit walnut, woody notes but not really that strong whisky or oaky, quite strong boozy finish and warming aftertaste, some bubblegum in the finish as well. Full bodied, soft carbonation, sticky. Don’t really see a point in blending aged hopped up (well, aging hops...) beer but OK. Interesting but way too boozy... (bottle from the brewery, thanks Nikola)
3.9 How: Bottle. Where: Systembolaget. Appearance: Dark amber colour with a tan head. Aroma: Malt, alcohol, raisin, dried fruit, vinous. Body: Full body, low carbonation. Flavour: Fruit, alcohol, caramel, malt, raisin.
3.7 Bottle @ home. Cellared for 2,5 years. Deep amber liquid with almost no head. Very vinous aroma with dark fruits. Sticky alcohol is up front along with vanilla, oak, leather, raisins, dates, pears, some terpentine, herbs and toffee. Taste is full bodied with a very long duration. The alcohols blends much better in taste than aroma. The taste is complex with lasting caramel and toffee. Vanilla, oak, marzipan, leather, raisins and dates . Finish is drier but still sweet with lingering honey, toffee, herbs, marzipan, pears, cogniac and oak.
4.5 I love this one. It’s one of those, big, over the top beers that BrewDog often (or often try to) make, but this one really works. Nice, amber color, and the sweet and alcohol aromas hit you during the pour. It’s hard to comprehend all the tastes going on, but the whisky casks really makes it mark on the beer. Sweet, spicy, alcohol, caramel, oak, medicinal, but even though the flavors are large, they mix well and leave you with an overall satisfying finish. Next to perfect American Strong!
4.0 Bottle@wka. browny muddy appearance. Bourbony nose, malty, sweet corny, slight herby, sweet doughy, cookie dpughy syrupy flavour. Full bodied, good bitters, bit boozy whiskeybourbonesque finish. Lots of flavours, intense. Kind of a beer you could write esseys about, complex. Pretty nice flavours too. Totally worth the 5€. -- rated with beerbasher/winphone
4.5 Kolor: miedziany, delikatnie zamglony. Wysycenie: w kierunku niskiego.
4.1 Bottle. bronze-colored, clear, with light creamy froth. Aroma: complex, honey, oak, smoke, white sherry, whiskey, very nice. Taste: sweetness, dried fruit, raisins, sherry Oloroso, honey, warming and very good.
3.8 The first bottle shared at TheArtofTea place. 10.03.2016. Clear amber with bronze and cooper color. Like a liqueur and port, like american barley wine. Sweet, sticky, rich and spicy, with a litlle bitter in the end. Nice
4.4 From a bottle that has been stored since release. The hopped influence that was there on release has now reduced. The barrel aged influence are stronger, with the whisky finish now balancing out the sweetness of the beer.
3.4 Bottled. Amber colour with a mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is herbal, grassy, some bready and herbal notes along with mild caramel and nuts. Flavour is floral, herbal, some mild bready and nutty notes along with some slgiht alcohol and mild toffee.
Corpo pieno, carbonazione medio-bassa, oleosa.
3.5 Bottled from Systembolaget Deep Coop and almost no head. Very sweet flavour. Brown sugar, apricots, raisins. Sherry/port-ish.
4.0 KRS 140815. Pale amber colour with a beige head. Flavour is alcohol, orange, pine, bread, caramel, whiskey, oak, dried fruit, sugar, malt. Full body. Very nice beer.
Smaker malt, karamell, eik, krydder,mørk frukt og alkohol. Meget bra
4.2 Clear, amber colour with poor, beige head. Sweet aroma, dried fruits, barrel, caramel, herbs and some roastness. Taste is also sweet, dried fruits, herbs, caramel, melanoidins. In the background some bitterness.
4.0 Bottle. Almost clear in the glass, amber in color and with a small, beige head. The aroma is lightly alcoholic, with dried fruits, caramel and some faint roasted malts, there’s pine cones, resins and boozy, some bread crust, nuts and dark sugar. It’s full-bodied, warming and softly carbonated, with loads of flavors. bread, caramel, dried fruits, dark sugar, some wood, pine cones and resins and a decent bitterness. Lasting finish. Rather wonderful this one, sure complex, a beer that needs quite some time to be consumed, and it’s sure repeatable. 150814

2.2 Sehr süßer, minimal alkoholischer Antrunk. Sehr sehr süß bleibend, minimal herb. Kein Hopfen, unausgewogen, trocken herb. 7/8/4/7/8/6
Portvin. Kjenner alkoholdunsten lenge. Lite kullsyre.
4.3 Ruby copper with white head. Toffee, licorice, floral, herbal, roasted caramel and alcohol spice. Fruity, sweet, licorice and hoppy finish. Overall: almost like a barley wine
