BrewDog Paradox Compass Box

BrewDog Paradox Compass Box

Paradox Compass Box is the latest of our whisky cask aged imperial stouts to be released from its smoky, shadowy cocoon.

Our huge stout was aged in Compass Box great King Street barrels for 221 days before bottling.

Full bodied, crashing roasty malt flavours are tempered by a rich chocolate character, balanced with light smoke and an extra layer of orange oil complexity.

4.5 Appearance- jet black, completely opaque, a beige foamy head which gradually settles. Aroma- dark chocolate, booze, vanilla, peaty whisky, smoke, rich coffee, leather, burnt treacle, woody earthy malt, dark rum, Christmas pudding. Smells rich. Taste- rich chocolate sauce, roast dark malt, burnt toast, treacle toffee, dark roast coffee, toffee, vanilla sweetness runs throughout, hints of marzipan, candied fruit, cherries, blended raisin, smoky peat, dessert-like sweetness. Oily mouthfeel, sticky finish. Superb.
4.1 (unsure of vintage) 330mL Tried alongside the Islay addition at "Tony's Taphouse" Flawless pitch black sump oil body with dark tan head. Aroma is immense - stacks of cocoa & chocolate - slightly oaky, smoky, dark, toasty, hint of Jaffa. Thick bodied, oily, slick, warm, lovely. Body follows on from the nose - perhaps not as intense - chocolate pudding, sweet cookies, Jaffa, Milo, good bitterness, subtle smoke on finish. Loved the Islay, but this was even better!

4.2 Look: dark brown, opaque, dark head with average retention. Aroma: chocolate, tar, some smoked notes, dark malt, mature alcohol. Taste: moderate sweetness, some acidity, burned bitterness. Flavour: some soy sauce, whisky, mature cheese, woody vanilla notes, ash, wormwood, black pepper. Spicy warming alcohol finish. Rich and strong. Very good.
4.2 Bottle shared with rayaron at a tasting. Opaque brown-black with a tan head. Aroma of peat, iodine, whiskey, cocoa, wood, soy sauce. Sweet, flavors of chocolate, soy, coffee, caramel, prunes, whiskey, coconut, warming alcohol down the throat. Full bodied, oily and rounded. Great.
4.2 At a tasting, many thanks, small brown bubbly head, pitch black color, aroma of soy and wood, lots of umami traits and a light smokiness coming through later, flavor of coconut, ash and umami with whiskey hints, quite sweet but blending in really nicely. Excellent.
4.2 Bottle shared at a tasting at zvsn's place. Opaque black with brownish head. The aroma has notes of whiskey, alcoholic, iodine, wood, soy sauce and some peat. The flavor has lots of soy sauce, umami, quite alcoholic, some smokiness, salted fish, roasted. Smooth, full-bodied. Excellent.
4.2 (An entire) BOTTLE 33 CL. Pitch black, orange head. Rich luscious chocolaty dark malts, molasses, smoky roastiness, rubber? some whisky? The taste is even better - just the right balance of dark malts sweetness, dark fruit - with being sugary or sticky - roasty rubbery slightly cheesy bitterness, warming alcohol and some spirit. Rich yet easy drinking body. Excellent.
3.6 Dark reddish brown, hazy, small coffee head. Chocolate, nuts, wine in the aroma. Full body, roasted taste, black bread, chocolate, bitterness. Woody aftertaste. Overall - classic imperial stout. Nothing exceptional, nothing bag either. Doesn't seem like whisky ba though
3.3 Bottle. Blackest brown, dark golden brown head. Cigarette ash, burned wood and chocolate roast aroma. Full to medium body, sticky. Berry liquor overtones. Sweet finish.
3.2 (bottle) deepest brown colour with a frothy beige head. aroma of cocktail tomatoes and peaches, with a hint of ash, some light manure and egg and cress sandwiches. flavour is mostly burnt toffee and earth, with a light hint of roasted malts, some fried eggs and a light roasted-bitter umami finish. heavy-bodied with soft carbonation.

3.4 Bottle. Pours pitch black. Nose is ash tray, more chocolate than whiskey. Palate is a bit more drinkable than the normal version, but still pretty ashy. Ok.

4.0 Dec. ’16. A 0.33 l bottle at Brewdog Rome. It poured a pitch black body with a medium sized but persistent brown head. Very strong aroma of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate, light peat and some dark bread. Flavor was strong, lightly sweet, salty, sour, bitter... Well, better to say a little bit of everything. Salt note was admittedly weird at first, soon it blended with very peaty, whisky-ish character. Still, not that alcoholic as ABV and whisky barrel aging would suggest, being relatively smooth on palate. Initially strongest malty sweetish chocolate and roasted coffee notes fell into second plan with tingling barrel aging notes, too. Still there, with dried fruits, mixing into a liquor of everything mentioned. Full bodied with longer finish, where peat, dried fruit and chocolate were most durable. Much more complex than initial aroma would suggest. A serious, well made IS with an accent to peat and strength.
3.8 Damn that’s nice but I would love a bit less alcohol in aroma. Taste is full of raw cocoa and a bit smoky
4.0 Mmm ... chocolate, dried fruit, very sweet and malty with a whiskey rounding to take some of the harshness off. Fairly thick with no carbonation and very little bitterness.
3.6 Bez szału to piwo generalnie. Dobre, trzyma poziom, ale generalnie niewiele poza tym.
4.6 0,33 l. Bottle. Dark brown color with brown head. Whisky, roasted malt aroma. Chocolate, whisky, sweet, bitter, coffee taste. Full body. Soft carbonation. Bitter finish. I love it.

4.4 330ml Bottle. Pours a deep black with almost no head. Rich chocolate nose with hidden alcohol notes. Full body with the same strong rich flavours. A slight alcohol note underneath. I was not able to pick up any destinct whiskey notes.
4.5 Bottle 0.33l. Brown to black colored. AROMA- whisky, dark chocolate, pralines. FLAVOR- moderately sweet, pleasantly bitter, smooth alcohol, pralines, whisky, cocoa powder, roasted cocoa powder. Long bitter finish. Fuller bodied. Delicious.
4.4 #1263 Bottle. Very dark brown to black, minimal tan head. Aroma of chocolate, honey, coffee. Taste is strongly sweet with pleasantly bitter finish. Chocolate, pealines, whisky, nuts, cocoa powder, honey, coffee. Full body, medium to high carbonation, gluey texture. Very good, sweet impie. Greatly balanced between chocolate and whisky. Personal note: 3/4 of impies selection for 4th wedding anniversary.
5.0 Black with a fizzy brown head, that vanished in few seconds, no lacing, dead oil appearance. Aroma of licorice, plums, vanilla and roasted malts. High complexity on the palate where this thick liquid provides: dried plums, licorice, leather, oak, whiskey, coffee, vanilla, chocolate. Smooth, creamy, boozy, warm, with all the carbonation gone with the pouring. Amazing stout!
4.3 Bottle. Jet black with small tan head and almost no lacing. Strong and solid aromas of chocolate, dried fruits (plums, raisins), dark bread and tones of roasted malts. Full body, almost flat what gives a very smooth, oily mouth feel. Very complex taste, sweet, little bit spicy and ashy, with light bitterness in the finish. Extremely well balanced, there is a some light alcohol warming only in first sips. Wish to have more bottles...
4.0 Keg Third of a Pint at BrewDog, Soho, London in Dec 2015 - Black in colour. Small tan head. Very Malty; roasty malts, dark chocolate, caramel, oak, vanilla, tar, smoke. Fruity; citrus orange. Spicy. Warming alcohol evident. Smooth and Rich. Good malt/fruit/spice balance. Sweet roasty chocolate malty fruity throughout. Very Tasty. Liked this. Good BA Impy Stout! (2015-12-22)
4.2 Beautifully black beer with a very fine creamy head. Super intense nose with a complex mix of never-ending malt goodness, coffee and chocolate, and a very fine dark dried fruit profile (plums, figs, raisins) and the whisky aromas of wood, caramel, sea air and vanilla. Velvet carbonation delivers a oily, treacle thick beer onto the palate. Really nice mouthfeel. The nose carries through directly into the mouth but the whiskey presence is upped. Nice feeling of strength here without any real burn from th 15% ABV. Deep molasses, coffee, and chocolate with a very subtle soy sauce complexity - perhaps coming from the whiskey. Then there’s a vanilla, caramel and earth twist. A light beach taste (not too peaty or sea-spray, more like sea sand) just peeps through the darkness. One can say many things about the brewery - the hit and miss nature, the now rather tiresome rhetoric and ideology - but when all is said and done, what counts is what’s in the bottle and what’s in this bottle is superb.
