4.0 Bottle. Pours opaque black with thin, fizzy tan heady; short retention and no lacing. Aroma is roasted and caramel malt, figs, dates, plums, scotch, vanilla, earthy hops, chocolate, and oak. Flavor is malt forward with good supporting dark fruit esters and faint hops; scotch undertones throughout with a dry, oak finish. Medium/full body, low carbonation, and high warmth. Definitely past its prime, but still a good beer.
2.9 Dunkler Malzantrunk. /9/9/10/11/9
4.0 Bottle of Batch 5. Crazy pitch-black pour with a tiny brownish head.. Light aroma of malts, dark fruit, chocolate and peated whiskey. Flavor is sticky sweet with smoky vanilla notes. Loads of scotch backbone with hints of chocolate-covered cherries, Chewable malts and a woodiness throughout.. I love good scotch and this one works for me. Dry, malt finish. Velly nice.....
4.1 Bottle... Poured near black with a thin, tannish head. Quite boozy, whiskey-ish. Molasses, cocoa, dark, roasted malts. Sweet with toffee, caramel, vanilla, and a nice earthy, oak and wooden balance. Slight peat and smoke notes to it too but far in the background.
4.0 11.2oz bottle. Pours a black body with a thin, light brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate, delicate, creamy lacing. Aroma is solid. Lots of molasses and rich chocolate. A smooth vanilla and softer roast that fills in the aroma nicely. Some scotch and a light oakiness that offers a pleasant addition rather than overpowering like some barrel aged beers. The scotch and oak grows more as this warms and seems more welcoming than other barrels, while giving off just a hint of sharpness. A faint berry creeps its way into the aroma as well. Flavor is more the same. Richer and sweeter chocolate up front with some molasses. Really soft and creamy. A gentle scotch and oak as well as a smooth vanilla comes in along with a rounding roast. Chocolate cookies and roast grow richer in the finish with a nice, warming, delicate scotch and somewhat spicy oak. Slowly dries with a light bitterness leaving a fairly lengthy aftertaste. Medium, silky body with a very light carbonation. Overall, this is a really solid beer. Lots of rich, rounded flavors with a silky smooth body. They used the barrels nicely on this one.
3.6 33cl, Batch 5, exclusive Scottish brew, thx to Jeppe!, complex Stout, heavy, yet balanced, clear, nearly no head, good brew, yet very expensive!
3.7 Bottle. Pours near-pitch-black but allows for a deep, reddish shine through the light. Oily texture, some lacing, modest creamy and tanned head. Nice aroma with with notes of roasted malts, whiskey/bourbon, dark chocolate and some faint, dark berries. The taste feels mildly roasted, smoked and has notes of vanilla, chocolate and some berry-like malt sweetnes. Palate is oily but relatively light, probably leaving some fullness to be desired, although this improves slightly as the temperature rises. Medium to long duration, low to flat carbonation. Excellent!
3.9 Pours a deep dark brown color. Small tan head head that lasted throughout. Aromas of bourbon and wood. Flavor was a lot of whisky, hints of smoke, chocolate. Full bodied and creamy. Tasted more whisky than beer. WOW, this is a flavorful beer!!
4.1 Bottle. Imperial Stout rating #100. Pitch black with a creamy beige head. Sweet caramel, vanilla, oak, roasted malt, coffee added sugar and chocolate in aroma. Lots of stuff going on. Soft and smooth body. Low carbonation. The flavour is oak, vanilla, whisky, caramel, chocolate and warming alcohol. Very nice. Light peaty roasty finish.
3.4 Bottle. Bourbony vanilla and sugar, dark black pour with a little bit of carbonation. Flavor is strong chocolate, whiskey, vanilla, oak, and finished dry and boozy. Good, but not $12 a bottle good.
4.0 From notes. Black/dark brown, small tan cap. Roasty, burnt malt, dark chocolate, whole coffee, toast/biscuit, dry wood, cookie, light vanilla, hints of speyside scotch and scotch alcohol. Medium/full body, just smoother than balanced, too easy to drink. Excellent.
3.5 Bottle 355 ml Appearance : dark brown with rocky top. Beige tint. 3+ Nose: Rich, clean woody feel , slightly alcoholic . Clean strong nose. 8 - Flavor/Palate : Soft , brown malts with some alcohol. Hints of cask paired with brown malts. Oak ending. Fine .
3.4 Bottle shared with Radek. Pours black with whit soapy head. Medium mouthfeel. Aroma are there, ther is anise on the stout. So yes it is an above average beer all around.
4.1 Cask at Nicholson’s in Cincinnati. Pours black with a very small tan head that leaves only a small rim of bubbles around the inside of the glass. Snifter. The barrel aging is nice here, and the Scotch barrel appears to be more gentle than a bourbon barrel. Aroma of vanilla, oak, dark chocolate, molasses, Scotch, and dark fruit. Flavor of molasses, chocolate malt, dark fruits, nuts, oak, vanilla, and Scotch to warm it. Full bodied. Really nice creamy mouthfeel, silky smooth- probably even more so because of the cask. Impressive restraint for a barrel-aged beer, but there’s still plenty to love about this one.
3.7 Oh my. Thin tan head that settles out quickly, lace is fair. Almost black. Nose is soft with whisky and smokey wood. Body is medium, slick and oily. Whiskey notes dominate with the stout flavors playing second, third and fourth fiddle, some roast coming through, light chocolate as well. Nice whisky flavors though. Keeps ya interested. Roasty, smokey finish, lightly sweet and interesting, woodsy. Makes ya wanna be by a campfire, yup. Eat meat! Bottle procured @statelineliquors.
3.2 Near black, thin tan head, no lacing. Aroma is sweet, lots of chocolate, light alcohol, some roast. Flavour is fairly hot, light chocolate roast, pretty sweet. Warm mouthfeel, light body, medium carbonation. Finishes a little thin, pretty hot. Hot and thin, uneventful. 330ml bottle obtained in a trade with TheCheeseMan, thanks Dan. Opened on March 17, 2009. Batch 005, Best before April 30, 2009.
3.7 Thanks to Immy for this! Black pour with a thin beige head. Aroma is whiskey, oaky tannins and chocolate. Flavor follows suite. With a big warming finish. A little alcoholic but thats a good thing in the cold weather
4.1 Bottle at home. Black, no head. Aroma heavy malty (caramel, roasted, notes of wood, light spicy). Flavor moderate sweet. Body full, smooth and round, the alcohol is well hidden.
4.3 You actually get the peat in this one. It was a bit of a shock at first. On second sip, it starts to meld nicely with the cocoa and makes for a nice beer.
3.8 23rd August 2008. Strong but smooth whiskey dominates and produces a notably hot finish. The chocolate and coffee support all the whiskey very well. Unapologetically a whiskey beer!
3.2 0.33l - Black liquid under fleeting tan head. Very mild nose, good stout with a hop prickle on tongue. Good.
3.5 12 oz bottle This beer suffers from the fact that the base beer is not world class. Not amount of aging in whiskey, bourbon, or cabernet could fix that. Bearing that in mind, it is not all that bad either. I am not likely to buy any more of the Paradox series unless they are on sale but this could have been worse. Aroma / Appearance - Flat with a fluid black body the reddish corners give it additional depth. A sticky sheen of lacing betray the 10% alcohol. The nose is almost pure whiskey with chocolate and prunes meekly popping through. It actually smells stronger than it actually is. Flavor / Palate - Very strong and alcoholic this tastes like whiskey has actually been mixed with the beer. Warm on the palate I would have few objections to this if I wanted scotch. However I was expecting at least some evidence of imperial stout to make its way though. This is not worth almost as much as a 750 of Speedway or BA Boris.
3.3 The problem with this is you are not starting off with a very good beer in the riptide. Aging it in the barrel certainly gives it some roguish, peaty charm though. A bit thin, as I found the riptide and beyond the nose, nothing terribly exciting. Expensive too.
3.8 33cl bottle, side-by-side tasting with Batch 013. Small tan head atop cola black body. Aroma is moderately sweet, peat, alcohol, light vanilla, cocoa, roast. Taste is moderately sweet, chocolate, some peat/smoke, coffee/roast, alcohol and alcohol warming. Smooth, medium-full body.
3.6 DØE Valby 09. Pours black with no head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, liquorish and chocolate. Flavour is roasted malt, chocolate, alcohol. Light bitter aftertaste.
3.6 Bottle, best by 06/06/09. Pours a deep coffee brown with a 1 finger thick beige head, spotty lacing. Nose starts off with peat smoke and cocoa dust and gives way to some metallic notes. Flavor was much more chocolaty than the others I’ve tried, a nice change of pace.
3.3 Still and dark cola brown / black with almost no trace of carbonation or head. Aroma is sweet with oxidized malty presence and treacle, chocolate and smoke notes. Taste is the same, with burnt toffee, and heavily oxidized malt. Residual sweetness is fairly high with heavy smoke lingering into the finish. $12/12oz
3.9 The nose on this was definately whiskey.Poured pitch black with virtually no head. This combined the best of both worlds, whiskey and beer. The whiskey flavor seemed to be dominate here. The finish was warming, definately feeling the alcohol.
3.8 Dark brown poor. Aroma of coffee and whisky. Flavor was surprisingly lacking of any smokey ness, or wood!!! Amazing...Really. Slight coffee flavor with black pepper.
4.1 Poured very dark brown, big but smooth, wood, vanilla, dark chocolate, little coffee, little coconut, little dark fruit.
