BrewDog Restorative Beverage For Invalids and Convalescents

BrewDog Restorative Beverage For Invalids and Convalescents

Bottle & keg, special

From their 1700’s London origins to their 1800’s Burton heyday through their 2000’s Californian rebirth, IPA has remained one of the world’s most evocative, exciting and encapsulating beer styles. IPA is our go-to style here at BrewDog; from Punk to Hardcore, Jack Hammer to Atlantic IPA, we have majored in bringing you as many hop-forward beers to you as is humanly possible..

We wanted to brew a completely new and conceptual IPA that paid tribute to the style’s origins whilst incorporating the devastatingly modern techniques and technologies. A 21st Century drink with an 18th Century ethos; a very new yet very old IPA.

We found our inspiration from a doctor. The ‘father of Pharmacology’ Dr Jonathan Pereira to be precise. In 1843 he published a book which shook the establishment. Titled ‘A Treatise on Food and Diet’, it referred to the IPA’s of the early to mid 1800’s in the following terms:

“The Indian Pale Ale is carefully fermented, so as to be devoid of all sweetness, or, in other words, to be dry; and it contains double the usual quantity of hops.

It forms, therefore, a most valuable restorative beverage for invalids and convalescents.

It is taken with benefit by many persons on whom other kinds of ale act injuriously.”

Upon further research (which started with Mitch Steele’s excellent book entitled IPA we discovered that the most prized IPA’s of the early 1800’s were the palest and driest ones. We then set about to create the palest and driest IPA we could, paying tribute to the best old world IPA’s before hopping the hell out of it with the most modern hops and the latest hopping techniques giving the beer a revivalist, postmodern spin.

The result is something which is almost 9%, is as light as a mass-market pilsner in colour, fermented to be as dry as a Lambic, but is as bitter as any double IPA and loaded with as much hop aroma as we can get into a beer. The fermentables in this beer were Marris Otter Extra Pale along with plenty of sugar as we mashed at a very low temperature to ensure maximum fermentability and attenuation and this beer is fermented within an inch of it’s life making it dry, sheer and bright. Citra, Amarillo & Centennial were all used in abundance in the kettle and also fired extremely liberally at this beer with our high tech hop cannon.

Screw any semblance of balance. This beer is like injecting hops straight into your tongue with a needle. Inspired by that other great era for India Pale Ales, the mid-nineteenth Century, Restorative Beverage is going to be impossible to remonstrate with, or counter. Its entire foundation exists on the basis of scientific fact.

The good Doctor had spoken. Restorative Beverage for Invalids and Convalescents is medical opinion writ large. History brought to life. It is the biggest, baddest, most uplifting IPA we have ever made.

3.9 lysbrunt, bittert, fruktig, karamell, fyldig...............................................
2.7 Bottle from Systembolaget Sweden named as Hop Hacker. Intence hop aroma with a small solvent aroma. Big hop taste but balanced bitterness.
3.7 Lukt: Veldig humlete: Mango, skog, sevje, ananas? Smak: Lite malt. Veldig humlete: skog, sevje, furu, tropisk. 7,4/10 181126
3.5 Can. Gold with a 1/2" white head. Aroma of grapefruit, caramelised orange peel, light bread, tripel-like candi sugar. Pretty sweet before fairly strong bitterness, only medium bodied, some overt alcohol. Hints of tropical fruit and herbs as well as bitter oranges. Some resin creeps in at the end. And eventually it does lean a ways to dry (although you wonder how much of that is the booze). Hard to rate - clean and pleasant but offers little else for its strength.
3.5 On tap pub. Small white layer. Quite hazy. Medium body. Aroma is berries, roses, strawberry leaves. Taste is quite sweet and strong
3.6 Tap@ukkometso. Clear golden color with small off-white head. Aroma has caramel, malt and hay. Taste is malty with long bitter and a bit sweet aftertaste. Flavors of caramel, pine, tropical fruits, citrus and honey.
3.2 Quite a lot of bullsh*t in the description, see above. What we have here is a malty and alcohol heavy ale with some fruity hop aroma and a decent but not exaggerated bitterness. As usual the double ipa subdues any hop content to a bare minimum.
3.5 Bottle from Systembolaget. Golden with a medium white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine and hops. The same in the taste. The body was medium and the finish rather bitter. Earlier Rating: 9/28/2018 Total Score: 3.6 Sample at SBWF 2018. A bit hazy golden/yellow with a white head. Aroma of hops, citrus, orange and some resin. The same in the taste. 3.9 330ml can served in a pint glass. Pours a clear golden color forming a medium light and bubbled white head with medium retention and some thin lingering lacings formed and left in the glass. Nose is sweet, flowery and very fruity. Strong notes of passion fruit and grapefruit. Strong notes of sweet pale malts and citrus zest. Hop cones. Sweet upfront taste that becomes quickly bitter and grassy. Strong and persistent bitterness. Great bittersweet balance. Passion fruit, grapefruit, tangerine and zest. Caramel malts and grass. Hints of pine and resin. Heavy body. Medium to low carbonation caramel and zest in the afteraste. Persistent lingering bitterness. Great drinkability. Strong character IIPA. Very good
3.5 Thin off white head soon left a collar & skim on a hazy vivid golden still body. Juicy, zesty aroma with peach & tropical fruits. Medium to full bodied, oily on the palate, slightly tingly & crisp & clean on the back. Bitter pithy tastes of grapefruit, tropical fruits, pine & hops with a really long bitter finish.
3.2 Tap at Brewdog Tallinn. Slightly hazy golden colour, small white head stays. Aroma is fruity, sweeter side, peach, some pine. Taste is hoppy, oily, bit piney, boozy. Hops in finish. Oily mouthfeel. Rather thin body, bit below average carbonation. Weird brew, oily, but still drinkable
