BrewDog Russian Doll - Double IPA
Russian Doll is our latest fantastic voyage into the essence of beer. This time we’ve used the same malts, hops, and yeast - the differences are down to the ABV.
There’s a great complexity when trying the beers side by side - the aromas & flavours from extra pale, cara and dark crystal malts vary from biscuity through caramel, toffee and treacle as you might expect, but the hops (simcoe, citra, cascade and centennial) present differently from style to style - from zesty to tropical through stone fruit to jammy.

Bottled. The aroma has biscuit/caramel, aprikots, some mango, some pine. Clear, copper coloured beer with a lasting, thin, off-white head. The taste is moderate bitter, has some malty sweetness, tropical fruits. Slightly dry finish.
Bottle@Amsterdam. Slightly cloudy amber color, white head. Hoppy aroma with medicinal hops. Full flavor with bitter honey. Full body, medium carbonation. Nice.
33 cl systembolaget. Inta alls samma upplevelse som med ipan men ändå helt okej men jag kommer inte att köpa denna igen.
Bottled. Pours golden with a big white head. Smells citrus, sweet grassy hoppy. Tastes sweet grassy hoppy, some alcohol with alcohol bitter finish.
Bottle from Systembolaget. Malty caramel aroma, hoppy, grassy, citrus, hay notes, floral, some grass. Hoppy caramel flavor, hay, floral, bready, floral notes. A bit unclean.
@ Basunen 15-4-11: trevlig doft av humle. smaken är fyllig, tydlig humle, lite gula frukter. Fin balans. En ok dipa men som inte sticker ut.

Flaska från Systembolaget delad med @thaalcoholic. Dimmig bärnstensfärgad vätska med ljust skum. Maltig dipa som är betydligt bättre än ipan om man frågar mig.
Flaska från SB. Fyra öl, samma malt och humlesorter. Nr3, deras dubbel-IPA. Doftar som deras IPA i Russian Doll-serien men där fänkålet tonats ner. Samma beska men med större maltkropp. Liten besvikelse. Hade hoppats på mer.
Bottled:
A fairly mild dipa. The taste of pine needles and raisins is the most prominent flavors. Bitterness is on IPA levels. Easy to drink.
Bottle from systembolaget sweden. Hoppy aroma that goes towards foot sweat. Sweet caramell taste with a small bitterness for a double ipa. Big body.
The aroma of fruity, bitter and berries. Weak bitterness which fills the upper part of the mouth a weak moment. A little too bitter for me but still okay to drink. Approved beer. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

29.12.2014. Aroma of caramel malts, toffee, some piney hops - sweet and malty. Body is also malty but hoppy bitterness comes in, some grapefruit and pine. Tastes Brewdog. Tasty sweetish dipa.

Appearance: Hazy amber colour with an off-white head.
Aroma: Citrus, tropical fruit, caramel, hops.
Body: Medium to full body, medium carbonation.
Flavour: Caramel, citrus, hops, tropical fruit.
Aroma in this one is mild fruits, sweet fruit jam and caramels. Not that super hoppy bite that I expected. The taste is also on the sweeter side when talking about Imperial IPA’s. Sweet peaches and ripe sweet oranges and actually some malt character breaking through from beneath. My thoughts go towards fruit salad with ice cream. I was surprised by the fact that it was rather sweet and not that aggressive.
@ Havregatan 150321. Bottle (330 ml) from Systembolaget. Fruity and hoppy with citrusy and caramely notes, grapefruits, sweet, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is dry, bitter and fruity.
Smells like a good IPA. Citrus and a hint of booze.
Poors orange towards brown, hazy... Minimal head..
Tastes great, full withs hints of plum and ripe fruits. Long finish with citrus..
Interesting how the four beers in the series fit, a fresh and light pale ale, a IPA with good sting, a more mature double IPA and to finish off the over the top barley wine. You can really taste how it develops with the alcohol.. Fun
@ Havregatan 21/3-15. Bottle from Systembolaget. Hoppy and fruity with grapefruit, citrus and pine needles. Body is medium, the finish is dry and hoppy with notes of grapefruit and pine needles.
Lätt grumlig bärnstensfärgad öl med ljus beige nästan vitt skum. Bra humlad öl med fräsch fruktighet men där malten ändå får sin plats. Doftar bla citron, ananas, passionsfrukt, malt och karamell. Smaken är fräsch med en viss sötma med bra inslag av malt och en lagom beska. I min smak helt klart! Flaska från Systembolaget.

Hazy Amber with a small head.
Piney, resinous a bit sweetish aroma.
Rather sweet flavour. Fresh pine-needles and dried apricots.
Flaska från SB. Smak och doft av humle, malt, karamell, mango, aprikos, persika, grapefrukt, citrus med toner av apelsin och torkad frukt. Lagom sötma, fruktig, stor och rund kropp. Beska med smak av grapefrukt.
Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty grapefruit hoppy aroma. Fruity malty grapefruit hoppy flavor. Has a fruity malty grapefruit hoppy bitter finish.
Flaska från SB. Klar bärnstenfärgad med lätt vit skumkrona. Söt godisdoft med inslag av ananas, melon och hjortonsylt. Medelfyllig kropp. Bra balanserad sötma. Smak av isglass, hjortron, ananas och druvsocker.
Flaska systembolaget. Orangebrun kulör. Småsöt maltig doft med ananas, hö och lite knäck. Maltig smak med övermogen frukt, farinsocker och örter. Ganska diskret och återhållsam dipa. Känns välgjord.

This one is quite a refreshing and very drinkable double IPA, if I’m honest it actually seems more like a regular American IPA to be but I’ll trust Brewdog on this, they know their IPA’s after all. The beer has quite a good balance with a nice hop filled flavour with some good tropical fruits coming through and the caramel right at the end seen things out well.
330 ml bottle. Clear amber with white head. Smell is pine, grapefruit, caramel and citrus zest, Taste is sweet caramel and jam, with bitter grapefruit, pine, resin and citrus zest. Semi dry with medium bitterness and medium carbonation,
Bottle (33 cl) from Systembolaget. Clear amber, medium white head. Bready malt aroma, piney hops with some tropical fruits. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Semi dry, medium bitterness.
Bottled, from Systembolaget. Hazy pale amber, small head. Peachy nose with some hawthorn. Sweet with mediu-full body and syrupy mouthfeel. Caramelly and syrupy with citrus and peach. Sugary finish with medium bitterness. Aiming for the middle of the road, so-so execution. Most energy seem to go into marketing at BrewDog these days, much less into actual brewing.

Mycket grape i smaken och citrusskalsbeska.
Fyllig och fin.
