BrewDog Russian Doll - Pale Ale
Russian Doll is our latest fantastic voyage into the essence of beer. This time we’ve used the same malts, hops, and yeast - the differences are down to the ABV.
There’s a great complexity when trying the beers side by side - the aromas & flavours from extra pale, cara and dark crystal malts vary from biscuity through caramel, toffee and treacle as you might expect, but the hops (simcoe, citra, cascade and centennial) present differently from style to style - from zesty to tropical through stone fruit to jammy.
The labels feature exclusive artwork by Esther McManus. Initially brewed in 2014, the re-released in 2019.

Shared bottle. Clear golden with very big white head. Light peach, mint, wood glue, some yoghurt, cardboard, sweat, passion fruit. Light sweet with dry bitter finish. Light bodied with lots of carbonation. Some nice notes but also some nasty off notes.
Bottled. 15cl sample. The aroma has citrus, union. Almost clear, golden coloured beer with a thin white head. The taste is light bitter, has citrus, some union, light biscuit malt. Very refreshing and easy drinking. Could use a bit more hop aroma.
Bottle from Systembolaget, part of Russian Doll 4-pack. Lowest ABV in the series as well as the least good beer. Rather thin. Some bitterness.
Bottle@Amsterdam. Amber color, white head. Slightly leathery aroma. Smooth, slightly chalky, lemony flavor. Medium-light body, medium carbonation. Not bad for the ABV.

Clear medium orange yellow color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, pale malt, moderate hoppy, citrus, fruity hops, light grass. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter with a long duration, hoppy, dusty, fruity hops. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20141207]
Bottled:
Thin and watery. Feels sharp in your mouth. The hoppy citrus bitterness on the other hand, is nice. But on the whole, this brew leaves no bigger impression.
Bottled. Pours golden with a big white head. Smells funky, stale, glue, herby hoppy. Tastes funky grassy hoppy with a similar finish.
Bottle from Systembolaget. Clear golden beer with a rich and lasting but airy white head. Hoppy perfume aroma, grassy, bready, herbal notes. Hoppy floral perfume flavor, grassy, hay, floral notes, some spices. Quite boring.
Flaska från SB. Fyra öl, samma malt och humlesorter. Nr1, deras APA. Med doft av ananas och lite citrus. Av de fyra är doften det klart mest framträdande i denna öl. Sträv, besk smak som avklingar med ananas. Lite fadd eftersmak.
Flaska från Systembolaget. Klar mörk guldfärgad vätska med ljust skum. Mild apa som funkar men inget speciellt
33 cl systembolaget. Riktigt god pale ale som passade utmärkt till tacobuffén. Synd att jag inte hade flera
Fruity and bitter scent. The same applies to the taste but also watery and slightly floral. Good bitterness which fills the front of the mouth a weak moment. A little bad taste but definitely drinkable. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.
@ Basunen 15-4-4: En ganska rakt fram pale ale med små humletoner. Tycks även känna en tydlig ton av honung.

Bottle from systembolaget sweden. Big white lastning head over a pale golden beer. Fresh light piny hop aroma with a small fine caramell tuch. Fresh hop taste with a balanced bitterness and caramell maltiness. A bit thin body, otherwise a good Apa.

Sweetish, slightly piney aroma and flavour.
Light body and bitterness.
20.12.2014. Aroma of caramel malts, toffee. Taste is not as good, quite boring watery with some caramel malts and hops.

Wygląd: Ciemnozłote, klarowne z iskrą. Biała, obfita piana, drobnopęcherzykowa. Niewielki lacing. Szybko opada.
Aromat: Przyjemny chmielowy, owoce egzotyczne, marakuja, mango, ananas i melon, lekko trawiasty i słodowy, biszkoptowo-karmelowy.
Odczucie: Wysycenie średnie do wysokiego, faktura kremowa, ciało niskie.
Smak: Lekkie, rześkie, chmielowo-słodowe, goryczka niska do średniej, owocowo-grejpfrutowa. Lekko kwaskowe.
Całość: Przyzwoite PA, lekko płaskie w smaku ale pijalne.

@ Agards väg 20/3-15. Bottle from Systembolaget. Hoppy and fruity with notes of citrus, tropical fruits and caramel. A bit watery and thin in flavor. Body is light to medium, the finish is dry and hoppy.
@ Havregatan 150320. Bottle (330 ml) from Systembolaget. Fruity and hoppy with caramely and citrusy notes, tropical fruity, sweet, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is dry, fruity and hoppy.
Bottle. Pours a golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity citrus hoppy grassy aroma. Fruity malty citrus hoppy flavor. Has a fruity malty citrus hoppy bitter finish.
Aroma is superfresh from white bread, gooseberries, orange zest and summerflowers. Taste brings a medium sweet thin body with notes from peaches and a small sting from the hops. It’s a bit watery and the aftertaste passes by as quick as an Audi R8 on the highway... A clean and refreshing summer beer.
Bottle (33 cl) from Systembolaget. Clear deep golden, some floaters, medium white head. Bready malt aroma with fruity and perfumy hops. Light bodied, medium carbonation. Dry with medium bitterness.
Flaska från SB. Smak och doft av persika, aprikos, citrus med toner av bröd, karamell och våt kartong. Lätt kropp och sötma, liten beska.
330 ml bottle from systembolaget. Hazy golden with white head. Smell is fruity and floral hops. Taste is fruity and light. A bit watery. Dry with low bitterness and high carbonation.
Flaska systembolaget. Orange kulör. Doft av citrus, barr, hö och jäst. Brödig och maltig smak med smått syrlig jästkaraktär och lite citrus
En god fruktig Pale Ale som hintar av malt men klart domineras av en fruktig humlig doft. Riktigt god doft som tyvärr inte riktigt följs upp i smak då den blir på gränsen till blaskig. Men helt klart en bra och god öl man lätt kan dricka många av, speciellt då den bara är 4%. Flaska från Systembolaget.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Fruity and hoppy smell with citrus, fairly mild. Light taste with just a hint of hops and a very light malt base. Light bitterness. Not very exciting but no off flavours.
