BrewDog Unleash the Yeast: Belgian Trappist

BrewDog Unleash the Yeast: Belgian Trappist

KEg and bottled, series
The unsung heroes, the foot soldiers of the revolution. We owe a huge debt to the billions of tiny yeast cells that work tirelessly to ferment sugars into alcohol and CO2. But yeast isn’t just here for the grunt work. Yeast has the power to change the flavour, aroma and complexion of your beer in an instant. This series is designed to showcase the impact different yeasts have on the same base beer.

This series of 4 beers gives the limelight to four totally different yeast strains: Belgian Trappist, Pilsen Lager, American Ale and Bavarian Weizen. All 4 beers have been brewed to the same ABV using a blend of Centennial and Amarillo hops and a backbone of Pale Ale, Munich and Cara Malts.

Malts:
Maris Otter, Crystal Malt, Caramalt

Hops:
Centennial, Amarillo

Twist:
Each beer is identical except for the different yeast used to ferment the beers creating 4 radically different beers from the same starting point

2.4 On tap at Christian Firtal. Dark golden with a lasting white head. The aroma is yeasty, with spicy and fruity notes and also some homebrew-like baking yeast. Sweet malty and fruity flavour with lots of baking yeast and phenols.
3.2 Flaska. Klar orange öl med vitt skum. Dofter och smaker av malt, gräs, toffee och frukt. Lätt oljig munkänsla. Medelstor kropp.
3.7 On tap in brew dog Glasgow. Hits the spot. The Belgian yeast taste is there but on a carrier of brew dog pale ale. A thirst quenching Belgian style. Well worth it. Never tried from the bottle but the tap is great.
3.2 Bottle from Voldby. Pours clear golden with a white head. Hoppy taste with notes of citrus, some fruits, spice, malts, yeast. Light creamy mouthfeel. Quite bitter finish.
2.5 Bottle. Buttery, quite hoppy, crisp. Obviously a novelty... but still: whats the point when the yeast dosent nearly fit with the hop-profile.
3.2 On tap at Brewdog Birmingham, pours a hazy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, dry hops, and crackery malt. Flavour is very dry and yeasty, with lots of Belgian yeast and dry crackery powdery malt. Full-bodied and dry. Decent stuff.
3.1 Bottle 330ml. [ As BrewDog Unleash the Yeast: Belgian Trappist ]. Clear medium orange color with a average, creamy - frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, toffee, buttery - butterscotch. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter with a long duration, sharp, belgium yeast, fruity. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20140405]
3.3 Leg at Brewdog Aberdeen. Bright golden orange coloured pour with a fleeting white head. Aroma is Belgian phenols, orange peel, wet sock, light clove. Flavour is composed of light caramel malt, some biscuit, orange rind and some dried fruits. Some pithy orange peel lingers in the finish and moderate bitterness. Palate is medium body light sweetness on the tongue. And carbonation massages the tongue.

3.8 Aroma: Smelling of bread, banana, spices and yeast. Appearance: A clear amber colored beer. A off-white head with good lacing and good curtains. Taste: Tasting bread, pear, spices, pepper, clove, apple peel and yeast. Palate: Medium carbonation, a soft texture. A medium body with a somewhat dry finish. 3.2 Keg at BD on da Bush, 31/05/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white covering that retains well. Nose is spice, bread dough, citric peel. Taste comprises bread dough, yeast esters, mandarin, lemon peel, light spice, grassy. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. So so - drinkable enough but gets a bit boring, not one to revisit.

2.9 Flaske 0,33l. Gave fra Rune. Kosedrikk i heimen 21 Mai 14. Gyldenbrun. Pent luftig skum som varer en stud. Kniplingslacing. Forsiktig krydderaroma. Smaken har samme krydderpreget men gjæren slår gjennom etter hvert. Veldig bitter ettersmak. Ikke helt vellykket

3.4 Tap at Brewdog, Sheffield. Hazy orange. Thick, lasting, white head. Oranges. Bread dough. Yeast. Light mintiness. Lovely aroma. Taste doesn’t live up to that, though, for me. Palate neither. All felt a bit bull and flat.
