U-Boat is a collaboration between BrewDog and Victory Brewing Company. Devised by Bill Covaleski (co-founder of Victory) alongside Bowman and Franz, this subversive smoked porter has a complex smoky aroma and a superbly balanced flavour. Brewed with a blend of speciality malts and fermented with lager yeast, U-Boat is deceptively different and achieves a flavour and body similar to a chocolate stout but by entirely different means.
The nose is warm and smoky, rich with milk chocolate and a hint of espresso, and a subtle lager character.
On the palate is a big dark malt sweetness, balanced by the blend of spicy Mittelfruh and citrussy Galena. Cocoa powder, rich dark chocolate, and ripe berries interplay with a toasty burnt sugar bitterness. The mouthfeel is thick and chewy with a treacley quality that doesn’t cloy, as it plays off against the hops and roast malt bitterness.
Malts: Extra pale Crystal Carafa Munich Chocolate Smoked
Hops: Mittelfruh Galena
Twist: Brewed with smoked malt & Lager yeast.

3.3Opaque black, beige head, yeasty aroma, coffee, caramel, honey, sweet, yeasty flavor, coffee, roasted, nice, sweet, a bit of smoke, medium bodied.
5.0Wow.
33 cl bottle at Gourmet Callao, Madrid, 9th floor, view all over Spain’s capital city center at dusk, pairing it with Gillardeau oysters -perfect moment!
Pours pitch bright black, ephemerous tan head. Intense aroma is quite peculiar: soy sauce, squid ink, leather, chocolate, tomato jam and vanilla pods. Mouthfeel is dense, sweetish and powerful. Low carb. Taste is umami and metallic. Slow-going. Very long finish with huge notes of dark coffee and restrained bitterness. Great.
Have one whenever you can, trust me.

Medium tan head. Clear black pour. Nice smokey aftertaste
3.7Bottle shared thanks to Deanso. Road soda as his #9000 tick! Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, licorice and malt. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation.
3.8Bottle. Pours pretty much black with a beige head. Aroma of chocolate with a little smoke. More of both in the taste with some dark fruits and cocoa powder. Some burnt molasses. Fairly full bodied with a little bit of hop kick right at the very end.
3.4Bottle from systembolaget Sweden. Short light brown head. Big chocolate aroma with a touch of smoke
Sweet chocolate taste with a medium body and salty tuch. A bit to one dimensional.
3.6Bardzo wyraźny susz owocowy w aromacie z dużą ilością śliwek.
Aromat wędzony delikatnie z ledwo wyłapaną szynką.
Wygląd ładny z obfitą beżową pianą.
W smaku mocno wysycone, śliwkowe i słodkie.
Fajny portrer chyba trochę imo mało wędzony.
3.4Black with beige head. Roasted smell, with some smoke hints as well. Chocolate, coffee and some more smoke in the taste. Finish falls a bit short. An ok Smoked.
3.9Sokáig tartó közepes, szép kávé színű hab. Színe koromfekete. Pörkölt, füstös, kissé édeskés illat. Íze kiegyensúlyozott, pörkölt, feketekávés fő vonásokkal, füstös mellékízzel. Finom telt íz. Utóízét pörkölt keserűsség jellemzi, ami sokáig kitart.
3.5Bottle 33 cl. Pours pitch black with a small tan head and an aroma of smoked eel, roasted malts, dark chocolate, espresso, ripe cherries and toasted bread. The taste is light to medium sweet with lots of smoked flavour. Really nice beer!
3.7A black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate, leading to a dry roasted finish.
3.7from Amstein - black beer with a dark beige foam; gently smoky aroma, very chocolaty with notes of nuts and vanilla; full-bodied, fairly sweet, moderate carbonation; lot of chocolate and vanilla in the finish where the smokiness stays behind
4.0Medium-smoked aroma with some roasty, nuts and huge caramel punch. Minimal brown head, beer is nearly black, medium-sparkling. It’s real good baltic porter, but in my opinion, could have more smoked aroma and taste.
3.3BBE 22-07-17. Mustanpunainen, olematon vaahto. Suutuntuma hapokas, mausteinen, alkoholi tulee lievästi esiin, lievän vetinen body, helpohko kuitenkin juoda. Tahmea ja mukavan lämmittävä jälkifiilis vaikkei hirveän makealta tunnukaan. Smokediksi superhyvä, yleistasolla vain hyvä.
4.033cl bottle. Opaque dark brown/black colour with a thin tan head. Chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, nuts, smoked and toffee in the aroma. Average carbonation and medium body. Taste is a complex mixture of sweet chocolate, roasted coffee, bitter and smoked notes all well balanced. Overall, a very good beer.
3.9Flasch’: Black coloured, small ’n stable tanned head; solid sweet nose of dried fruits and caramel, faint traces of smoked malt and hops; moderate to solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied, really soft; lingering sweet-bitter finish presenting toasted malt and traces of chocolate. Despite its strength, very moreish…
3.8Kolor : Czarny. Lekkie rubinowe refleksy.
Piana: Beżowa. Średniotrwała.
Brudzi szkło w umiarkowanym stopniu.
Pozostawia pojedyńcze plamki na szkle.
Zapach: Poezja! To się nazywa PRAWDZIWA wędzonka! Nie jakieś tam Dupy Smalone czy inne Mehehehe..;)
Zapach intensywny. Dym torfowy. Wędzony boczek. Na drugim planie czekolada gorzka i kawa.
Smak: W smaku ntensywne nuty kawowo-czekoladowe. Wędzonka mocna , aromatyczna, pachnąca i bardzo smaczna.
Nawet teraz mi ślinka cieknie na samą myśl jak to piszę, a butelka już dawno pusta.
Porter stosunkowo słodki w smaku - z akcentami wanilii i karmelu. Nie jest to jednak muląca słodycz.
Goryczka średnio intensywna. Alkohol idealnie ukryty.
Wysycenie : Średnie.
Podsumowanie:
Kolejne piwo z BrewDoga i kolejny strzał w dziesiątkę. Piwo jest świetne. Aromaty czekoladowo-kawowe bardzo trwałe i intensywne.
Smak i zapach wędzonki mocno wyczuwalny.
Piwo gęste i treściwe.
Na pewno jeszcze do niego wrócę.

Good but not too smoked.

3.5December 25, 2015. Bottle, best before july 22, 2017.
Clear almost black with a small tan head. Aroma is light soft smoked, hints of dark berries, toffee, ash and dark bread. Taste is medium sweet, soft bitter and light smokey. Finish is sweet bready, berries, soft bitter roasted and smoked notes. Medium bodied, soft to average carbonation.
Good porter, not a lot of smokiness going on but good for a porter.
3.9From 0,33l bottle, BBD: 22/07/17 Pours hazy dark brown to black liquid, small frothy brown head, Aroma: dark chocolate, espresso, warming alcohol, milk, coconut, red fruits, cherries, Taste: medium to heavy sweet, medium to heavy bitter, light to medium sour, dark chocolate, red fruits, citrus, lemon peel, sour notes, cherries, raisins, espresso, mineral, Palate: medium body soft to average carbonation, slick mouthfeel, long bitter citrus aftertaste, Overall: fine, enjoyed.
3.5Nice and easy smokey porter. Moderate smokiness on a relatively large body and apparent sweetness. Well balanced to the beautiful bitterness.
3.8Lekker makkelijk bruin rakkertje met chocolade tonen in de barley smaak. Blijft redelijk fris en opgewekt ten opzichte van z’n kleur. Backlog from 2014/11/09.
3.9Bottled - Dark brown/black colour, medium sized, thick tan head, good retention and lacing. Burnt and slight ashy aromas, roasted nuts, coffee, chocolate and just a touch of smoke. Taste of chocolate, burnt breadcrust, dried red fruits, caramel and some wood with earthy tones. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, smooth texture, roasty and a bit astringent finish with a slight smokiness in the end. I like that the smoke doesnt take over, its just completes the beer. Very delicious.
3.4Black in colour with a creamy head. Aroma of some smoked malt and some chocolate together with some burnt sugar and dark dried fruits. Some vanilla and alcohol. Taste of some roasted malt with dark chocolate, some vanilla and sine dried fruits. Relatively light in taste.
4.0330ml bottle from Brewdog.com (£4.00):
This one was a really nice smoked porter, possibly the first of this type of beer that I’ve tried in a while. Definitely one that I enjoyed with the strong smoky flavours (naturally) & some good roasted malts but the beer still held a nice balance & went down more easily than expected; a great beer & one well worth trying if you can get a hold of one now.
3.2Bottle shared at a tasting (Thanks Viktor!). Pours a deep black with ruby highlights. Roasted malt, cacao, brown sugar and burned molasses on the nose. Some sourness that comes out on the palate with lots of bitter, dry and roasted character. Like charred coffee almost. The smoke is very mild, almost non-existent to be exact, but it is there in the corner, hiding. Dry finish. Overrated I feel.
4.0Nice, sweet and smoky baltic porter with nice and firm notes of chocolate, coffee and some oakish smoke.
4.0Warning: This review is written considering price in Poland (18 polish zl for 33cl, comparing to leading baltic porters at 6 polish zl for 50cl)
I would not recomend this beer for Polish residents. It is very simmilar to Baltic Porter but not as rich. and smooth like for example Porter from Ciechan or Grand from Amber.
Overaly very good beer, but facing strong competition localy.
