Brewer's Art Resurrection

Brewer's Art Resurrection

During the fermentation of the first batch of this Abbey-style dubbel, the yeast «died» and was «resurrected» by brewer Chris Cashell. This beer is not unlike those that certain Belgian monks have been brewing since the 16th century. Made with five types of barley malt and lots of sugar, this beer is quite strong and flavorful, without being too sweet.

3.0 Thx to Roger. A solid amber - didn’t seem like a dubbel to me. A bit of smoke, slightly acrid taste. Aroma makes a good impression.

2.8 Cask at GBBF 2015. It pours clear brown with a small beige head. The nose is earthy, toasty, bitter-sweet, raisin, sultana, spice and toffee. The taste is smooth, bitter-sweet, spicy, caramel, raisin, sultana, leather, charred wood and mild acidity with a dry, spiced finish. Medium+ body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. A bit watery for what it is. Forgettable.

2.9 Can at home. Pour is clear amber with a big tan head and great lacing. Dark fruity, honeycomb, sweet caramel, somewhat husky, bready, light nail polish, and pear notes in the aroma. Taste is husky, bready, somewhat sweet , light raisins, acetone, some fruit skins, and cookie malt. Medium body with high carbonation. Not good.

3.4 Can poured into a pint glass at home. Pours deep amber with fluffy light off-white head that lingers a bit. Taste is earthy, spicy, and malty. Medium bodied, great carbonation making it a real smooth drinker. A Dubbel done very well, and I was digging it.
2.8 Aroma - currants, toffee Appear - dark amber, ruby highlights Taste - slightly boozy, candy-like, bitter on back-end Mouthfeel - dry, light body
3.3 Rich, very hazy amber coloured body with a copper glow and a nice, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of malt, grain, caramel, light citrus hops, some raisins and a touch of apples - nice and relatively sweet smelling without any perceived yeast or pungency. Medium-bodied; Assertive hop flavour of citrus and light pine with a touch of honey right behind and a relatively strong malt flavour with grain and rye coming through. Aftertaste doesn’t show much body at all, no yeast and only a dry hop character with a touch of grain. Overall, a very interesting beer for the style - not like a typical dubbel at all, but not a bad beer - just different - more hops, less body, no yeast and a grain flavour make this decidedly american, so does the can! I sampled this twelve ounce can (I like having traditionally belgian styles in cans) purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom, I St), DC on 04-April-2014 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 09-September-2014.
3.7 Transfer from BA review on 4-7-13- Poured from can into a chalice glass Appearance – Pours a beautiful chestnut colored brew with a decent ruby red hue mixed within. Upon pouring there is a one finger light tan colored head that has a fantastic level of retention. Over time the head slowly fades leaving a nice level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell- The aroma is light overall. Some light toasted malts as well as some darker fruits are the heaviest of the detectable aromas. The darker aromas are mainly of a cherry and raisin smell. These aromas are all mixed with a slightly yeasty and lightly spiced aroma of coriander and clove as well as a bit of a boozy wine like smell. Taste- The taste begins on the drier side with a lightly roasted malt and bready flavor. Some lighter dark fruit flavors of cherry and plum are present upfront. As the flavors advance a caramel flavor comes and goes from the tongue never really having the chance to take the brew out of its dry tasting state. Some earthy and grassy hop flavors as well as a somewhat more potent alcohol flavor come to the taste more toward the middle to the end, breaking some of the smooth dryness that was present upfront. Other lighter flavor so of a yeasty and spicy flavor join the taste at its end, with the combination of all the flavors leaving a dry, crisp, and boozy flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel-The body of the beer is crisp and lighter for a 7 % dubbel with a carbonation level that is average to a tad above average. The slightly thinner body and slightly higher carbonation are great for complementing this crisp, dry and boozy tasting brew all while still allowing the lighter fruit flavors to shine through. Overall- A pretty nice dry and warming dubbel, which all the while still maintains a nice fruit flavor profile. Although it is a bit on the boozy and biting side at the end of the taste, it is still rather enjoyable to drink. Worth a try if you have the opportunity.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a clear amber with small tan head that lasts. The aroma is strong yeast, candy sugar, dark fruits. Medium mouthfeel with dark fruit, yeast, light booze. Good.
2.2 Bottle, caged and corked. Muddy and heavily silted brown color with a pillowtop head. The aroma is almost sour, mashy and mushy. The beer is overly doughy IMHO, with the requisite amounts of sugary caramel being mired in a heavy palate. (#5585, 7/26/2014)

3.5 4 oz draft pour at Leinenkugel’s Beer Garden in Baltimore. Amber with off-white head. Aromas of herbs, spices, yeast, candied fruit. Tastes of dark fruit, spices, yeast. Medium body with a dry finish. Medium carbonation.
3.3 Orange-red color, moderate off-white head. Clean malty sweet nose. Strong malt start, quickly followed by a spice taste mixed with mild bitterness. Mild bitterness finishes and lingers a bit. Moderate carbonation compliments the flavors.
