BridgePort Black Strap Stout

BridgePort Black Strap Stout

A healthy dose of Northwest hops balances the sweetness of black strap molasses to make this a velvet-rich, creamy descendent of the great Irish stouts. A real treat for those who crave the dark side of brewing.

2.4 Bottle to a pint. Musty chocolate aroma. Taste is almost sour. Too thin and fizzy.
3.2 Draught at the Bridgeport Brewery. Lovely fine, long-lasting head. Smooth, creamy mouth. Woody flavor with coffee. Rather dull and bland. Slightly sweet, and a bit tart as well. Flavor can’t keep up with appearance.
2.9 Weak soy sauce and prune aroma. Black with a medium tan head. Dry and slightly tart. Flavors of charcoal and cream sherry. Sweet-tart plum finish. There’s no mistaking the style and it’s very drinkable, but there isn’t much else happening. A modest upgrade from Guinness, but that might be debatable too. It does have its own character, though.
4.0 bottle. a really nice stout from BridgePort... it pours a light black, but settles darker, with a quarter inch tan head... which lasts throughout... really nice appearance. some coffee and roasted malt aromas... very smooth medium body that almost melts in your mouth... some slight chocolate notes come around and some big roasted malts. nice semi-sweet finish that leaves a really nice aftertaste. solid.
3.2 Had last night in bottle at Bulldog. Rating from memory and what I distinctly remember is lots of liquorice, salty, molasses and dark chocolate. It was very much like an English stout, but hopped up. It was kinda weird. At first I liked it, but then I decided I didn’t care for it that much after all. Something different, but won’t try again.
3.5 Black pour, no head, no lacing. Sweet, syrupy aroma. Smoky and sweet. Some licorice and caramel. Light toffee notes, with sickly sweet raisin and date undertones. Fizzy mouthfeel, tad watery. A little sweet and artificial, better than most crap.
3.7 Black pour with a not to style fizzy head. Very cocoa and coffee aroma. Bitter up front with a nitro metallic finish. Decent stout but could have used more girth.
3.5 Bottle. Pours a brown body with a tan head. Malty caramel and molasses with a lightly bitter feel. Hint of chocolate malt and a dry lightly roasty finish. A good brew.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malts. The flavor is strong roasted malts. Decent beer.
3.0 Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Pretty sweet aroma for a stout with some roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee. Flavor matched the aroma pretty well. A little too sweet for me from the molasses and dark frutis.
3.3 bottle at old chicago Poured a nearly opaque brownish black in color with a minimal tan head. Aroma is strong: roasted malt with a touch of coffee and alcohol. Flavor is interesting with a slightly dry and bitter front end fading into a bittersweet chocolate. A bit thin on the palate, but a very good beer nonetheless.
3.0 12oz bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black body with a thin, brown, quickly dissipating head that leaves some swirling lace on the surface and soapy lace on the glass. Aroma is sweet and nutty. Almost smells like a brown ale rather than a dry stout. Some light notes of roast in the background, but mostly caramel. The flavor is definitely more along the lines of a dry stout, but still leans toward a brown at first. Nutty and caramel malts dominate throughout before a nice touch of roasts kick in at the end and through the finish. Some fruitiness and more of a burnt taste starts creeping in as this warms. The sweetness seems to be molasses and I’m not picking up much chocolate. Sweet and sticky aftertaste with a light burnt roast flavor. Palate is light to medium, very creamy and smooth, and slightly carbonated. Overall, an odd "dry stout." Has the typical characteristics of a dry stout...more in the finish...but tastes like a nut brown initially. Almost like an infusion of the styles. Not bad at all, just a little unexpected.
3.9 Aroma is rich and smoky, and just a little sweet. It comes out of the bottle a dark, nearly opaque chocolaty brown and finishes the pour with a thick, fine-bubbled, light tan head. Flavor is rich if not too complex, rather hoppy, sweet but not cloying, with an undertone of molasses and hints of chocolate and caramel. Texture is very smooth and quite fizzy.
3.6 2008 Bottle - Thanks jake65! - 2009 Bottle - Pours dk brown with a small tan head...aroma is pretty substantial cocoa, coffee and char...flavour is similar, dry coffee bitterness with a not too sweet malty backbone...finish is thin with a char kick...
3.6 Actually really good. My favorite so far from Bridgeport. A creamy stout, with hints of oatmeal and coffee. Solid body and smooth throughout.
3.7 Dark black pour into creamy tan head than mostly dissipates into ring of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted chocolate malt. Initial flavor of sweet caramel fading into a piney hoppy bitter finish leaving a slighly smoky lingering aftertaste.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a black color with a two finger head. Does leave some lacing on the side of the glass. Aroma is roasted malts and chocolate. Taste is much of the same. A very dry finish. Decent beer
3.3 Pours dark brown/black, roasted malts, coffee, little chocolate, little caramel, dry finish.
3.2 Pours deep brown with a ring of a tan head. Nose is chocolate and roasted malt. A bit more coffee in the flavor. Dry finish.
3.5 Thanks to Aspidites for sharing this at the Valley brewing tasting. Black pour with a tan head, this had a nice flavor of roasted grain and coffee.
3.6 Black in color with a decent sized tan head. Aroma is of coffee, roasted malts, and a little chocolate. Taste is of caramel, coffee and rasted malts.
3.4 Solid black pour. Heavy aroma of malt and coffee. Flavor is fairly sweet, no doubt owing to the black strap molasses. Some hops present in the flavor, but that is more of a balance to the sweetness. Mouthfeel is smooth, although a bit on the watery side.
3.4 Dark stout with tan head. Subtle roasted aroma. Malty flavor with a bit of minerally sharpness to it reminiscent of a british stout. Smooth, dry finish.
3.1 Bottle sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective stout tasting on 1.16.09 courtesy of Dogbrick. Nice looking pour with a thin and bubbly off-white ring of head. Was a bit disappointed overall; thought this beer was way over-carbonated and the aroma did not match up with the flavor. Intimidating boozy aroma, but came across almost sour. In two words: Beer Cola.
3.2 Bottle sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective stout tasting on 1.16.09 courtesy of Dogbrick. Pours dark dark brown with a medium tan head. Malty aroma that is just a bit smoky and tart. Flavor is pretty much the same. Not bad overall.
3.5 Sampled at the Hopsnobbery Collective Stout tasting on 01/16/09. The beer is a nearly opaque brownish black color with a minimal light beige head that disappears quickly. Thin rings of lacing. Aroma of espresso and lightly smoky malt. Light and dry mouthfeel with flavors of coffee, caramel and touches of hops. The finish is mostly malty with a light hoppy character on the back end. Decent overall, but really does not compete with the better beers of the style.
3.3 Oily black pour with a small tan head that leaves a small layer behind. Chocolate smelling with a big malt aroma as well, maybe some licorice. Thin mouthfeel, chocolate and licorice in the flavor with some mild coffee thrown in. Pretty weak for a stout.
3.7 12oz bottle, good deal at $5.49 per sixer. Deep, dark black with a light tan head that was initially quite huge but is now a thin layer of foam. Decent stouty molasses smell but it is way down there. Easy flavor, no roast, malty, no molasses, hops? This is a good beer for the money but not my favorite stout by any means. 3.4 Pour is a dark black with a light tan head. Aroma of malt with a little chocolate and molasses. Medium bodied. Rich with flavor with no one flavor dominating.
3.3 12oz bottle, dark black color, with a beige head, leaving some laces, yeasty, roasted chocolate malt nose, with some dark chocolatey accents, with a faint liquorice, molasses, coffee aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a mild roasty, chocolate malt character, with a liquorice, anise spicy note, with some black coffee beans roastiness, with a mild molasses accent, leading towards a dark chocolatey, roasty bitterness finish.
