Bristol Beer Factory Southville Hop

Bristol Beer Factory Southville Hop

Inspired by the amazing hoppy beers being brewed by American craft brewers this beer is heavily hopped, packing it with tropical fruit flavours and aromas. Pineapple, passion fruit & grapefruit are the dominant features of this beautiful amber ale, that has a big strong malt backbone to balance out all the hops.

3.7 Draft Half Pint at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico, London in Mar 2011 - Amber-Gold in colour. Very Hoppy; piney resinous oily and grassy hops. Very Fruity; bitter grapefruit citrus and tropical fruit flavours; tangy and juicy. Malty backbone; toasty biscuity malts, caramel. Bitter citrus fruity and hoppy throughout. Nice IPA! (2011-03-07)
4.6 500ml bottle from Waitrose. Legacy rating. Pours rich orange-amber with deep and lingering head. Aroma explodes with tropical fruits - passion fruit and pineapple in particular, with bags of resin underpinning it. Beautifully balanced but strongly defined in character, sweet biscuit to even out the great bitter hoppiness. Love it!
3.8 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer.
3.8 Keg at The Hop Inn, Newcastle-Under-Lyme. A hazy amber colour with a medium white head. Aroma of toasted malts, caramel, strawberry, some orange, grapefruit, slight pine and subtle pineapple. Taste of orange, grapefruit, some pine, a hint of passion fruit, pineapple, slight toasted malts, burnt caramel and subtle red berries. Medium bodied and an oily texture. A long, dryish, piney and citrus hop bitterness in the finish. A very good take on an American IPA. A good amount of citrus and pine hop bitterness and sweet, caramel and toasted malts.
2.9 Butchers Hook, Southampton. The sweet malt body here does support the juicy citric hops so this feels quite balanced and drinkable. I hadn’t realised at the time that the abv was as high as 6.5% as it doesn’t feel that strong. For me the malt is not doing much more than balancing and supporting the hops. The malt is too pale, too biscuit like, and too bland, for my taste. The focus here is on the juicy hops, which thankfully held off, just, from burning my lips. I was OK with this, but it’s not really my thing.
4.1 On cask @ the Bon Accord Glasgow deep golden amber colour beer with tropical fruit aroma flavour is orange tropical fruits big hoppy flavour with malty backbone great American style ipa
3.9 Bottle from Waitrose, Michaelwood Services and drunk at Stowford farm campsite, Devon. Slightly hazy golden amber beer. Aroma of tropical fruit and pine resin. Taste is light pine resin, tropical fruit and juicy hops. Very good.
3.5 Bottle. Gold, thin but sustained white head and good condition. Big hoppy nose with hints of grass, grapefruit, raspberry jam and distant toffee. Full bodied and fruity in the mouth, with raspberry and sweet grain fighting a solid citrusy hop bitterness for balance but in the finish the bitterness becomes dominant without becoming dominating.
3.7 50cl bottle picked up at Waitrose, Stratford and consumed on 23-Jun-2016. Hazy amber colour with a medium sized white head. Aroma of tropical fruit and pine. Medium body and carbonation. Really fruit number - pineapple, mango and grapefruit. Medium hopped and bittersweet. Excellent, loved it.
3.5 Sunday 3rd July 2016. 500ml bottle conditioned, into a UK pint sleeve at home. Sediment left the bottle, so the dull amber body had a slight haze: on top a wispy white covering and collar. Tropical fruits rule both the nose and taste with a definite grapefruit lead. Liked it.
3.5 Bottle from Waitrose. (£2.50) Shortly after drinking a truly awful Sharps Doom Bar in a pub, I had this at home and the difference is night and day. Soft and subtle, lots of taste - just very good. Thumbs up.
3.4 Bottle from Beers of Europe. Deep golden colour with a thick off white head. Aroma deep orange, and clementine, marmalade, and pine. Taste starts light sweet, and long deep bittersweet to bitter finish. refreshing tang to the body.
3.5 Bottle from Waitrose, Gordano M5 services near Bristol. Clear amber coloured with a very thin head. Full fruity pale ale with a hoppy dryness behind this, but always flavoursome and full of character.
3.6 Bottle. Pours light amber. Aroma of grapefruit, pine, grass and tropical fruits. Taste has some light sweetness with a fairly heavy bitter finish. An enjoyable and good representation of the style.
3.8 Butelka . Zlote o lekkim metnawym wygladzie. Piana biala mala. W zapachu kroluja owoce i szyszki. W smaku chmielowe z duzym akcentem ananasa mango brzoskwini. Przyjemny powrot po 6miesiacach. Nadal zaskakuje swietnym balansem pomiedzy tropikalnymi owocami a sosnowymi goryczkowymi akcentami. Tym razem wydaje mi sie bardziej slodkie . Swietne MarcinG
4.2 Cask. Maltings, York. Amber colour. Light haze. Dense, creamy, lasting, milky white head. Huge, juicy, fruity, dank hop. Notes of ripe peach. Melon. Pine resin. Some strawberry. Sweet, toffee malts in the background. Smells fantastic. Taste sets off sweet, getting fruity, resinous bitter. Smooth, hop oily mouthfeel. A bit chewy. Long, resinous, oily bitter finish. Great stuff. Can’t help thinking it’d be a 4.6er if it was kegged, though!
3.4 Cask @ Grain Barge Bristol, golden with a white head , very hoppy but a nice beer overall , ok .
3.7 Pours hazy amber with a nice big frothy cream head. Sweet caramel and mango aroma. The taste has fruity mango and pine, especiallly in the bitter finish. Nice full mouthfeel. Good beer.
3.0 Fra fat på Piccadilly Tap 15 Feb 16. Delt med Rune. Gyldenbrun. Skum langs glasset. Lett ferskenaroma. Smaken det samme. Bra - men vel søt.
3.3 Cask ale, half, shared with Finn while waiting for a train at Piccadilly Tap. Near-clear amber coloured body, covering beige layer, fair lacing. Restrained aromas of caramel, dried fruit and grass. Fruity taste of lemony hops and grapefruit backed by malty sweetness. Dry bitter end with a twist of citrus shells. Fine bodied. Pleasing stuff (Manchester 15.02.2016).
4.3 Full of powerful malty flavour. One pint is never enough... Still my favourite strong hopped IPA.
3.9 Bottle; pours cloudy amber with a thin khaki head; tropical fruit aroma with some hints of malt and floral notes; taste is more tropical fruits with a hint of caramel and malt; finish is bitter; nice IPA
3.6 Cask at Old Bulls Head, Newcastle under Lyme. Pours golden with a white head. Sweet pine hop, boozy finish but well balanced. Very good.
3.7 Bright, slightly cloudy orange with a thin head leaving light lace. Firm malt aroma with tropical hops. Marmaladey bitterness, and a stale/musty component which doesn’t actually detract from the beer that much. Some light hops aromatics peek through, but this is an older example. Still a fine beer.
3.3 Origin: Bottle. Vessel: Bottle. Supplier: Alterego (Bristol). Hoppy with hints of caramel.
4.0 Cloudy, orange-gold pour with a thin white head. Tropical, passionfruit, pine, citrus aromas with nice malt underneath it all. Sweet, malty, but with tropical fruit and a bit of a bitter kick. Nice amount of carbonation but tiny little bubbles, gives it a good creamy feel. Bloody good beer.
4.1 Another gem from this solid brewer. Produces up a misty, lustrous, sunny amber with a lasting, tight, snow white foam that weaves a thick lace. Juicy and heavily resinous nose that oozes melon, grapefruit, pale stone fruits, orange peel and pine. Quite soft on the palate with a creamy and smooth finish made just that little bit rough from the bright hopping. Massive assertive bitterness that edges floral and resinous. Rose water meets camphor and nettles in the lengthy finish. A goid amount of tropical fruit esters fill it out with a grainy, biscuity malt base to keep it grounded. There is a touch of the 6.5 ABV that enhances everything around it. This is lipsmacking good ale. Balanced to a ’T’ with plenty of atoma and flavour, and still light enough to smash back all afternoon. Delicious! (50cL, BB 26/10/15, Luckies Liquor, East Vic. Park)
2.6 [Bottled, at the Great British Beer Festival, 2015 - Tutored tasting with Roger Protz] - Bristol Beer Factory Southville Hop IPA, 6.1%, bright amber, clear. Grapefruit, pinewoods, herbs on the nose. Sweet tropical fruit, medicinal notes very strong, herbs there too. Middle is floral, still very alcoholic. As is the finish. Cloyingly sweetish aftertaste of oranges and alcohol. Bah!
3.6 500ml bottle @Mad for Beer (Rome). Pours a light amber color, unclear, with a medium and persistent off-white head. Aroma of malt, grassy hops, pine and grapefruit. Flavour is balanced between malt and hops, medium sweet with a medium bitter end. Medium body, medium to light carbonation. Ok.
4.0 Fruit punching its way out of the glass (Lemon zest + Pineapple + Peach). Body not as hoppy (malt lends a Bitter-esque balance) but a v bitter finish (in a good way) which makes the whole thing together as a bit better than just a big hop-smacking water-fest. I’ll put it on record: I, for one, would happily go South-ville!
