Bristol Laughing Lab Scottish Ale

Bristol Laughing Lab Scottish Ale

Laughing Lab has a nourishing maltiness that comes from six specialty malts. Its nutty, roasted flavor is mildly sweet, but not too rich. Smooth and luscious!

3.3 A: Fainter than I would like, but plenty of nutty, chocolate notes A: Clear, nut brown, amber body with a rapidly disapating head T: Lighter bodied, malt forward, sweet chocolate, hazelnut P: Carbonation definitely present leading to lingering bubbles on the tongue O: Scottish Ales are not a common style so it is tough to compare, but in terms of classic style, this beer is malt forward, low hop presence and slightly sweet. It just doesn’t have the clean finish or balance that leaves me wanting more.
3.6 Poured in a chilled glass out of the bottle. Nice Amber/copper color. Doesn’t pour too much head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, and Malts. Flavor is real balanced and the taste has low to medium bitterness. All in all, great beer for the style.
3.4 12 oz. bottle, from the bottle. Thanks, Steve! Good malty character, with notes of peat, cereal, and hay. Sweet flavor, with a minimal bitterness. Light to medium body, grainy, lightly carbonated, and crisp and clean. This is a fun, malty, and approachable beer.
2.9 Sampled as GABF 2015. In the tasting glass pours amber with almost no foam. Nose of caramel malts. Medium body. Flavor is malts and some floral hops. Some bite in finish. The label is too much like Laughing Dog Brewery for me to be comfortable.
3.6 From a 12 oz bottle into a Mad Elf tulip glass. Pours brown with small head and lace. Aroma of caramel malts, malt balls. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of amber malts, caramel, minerals, peat, young melon. Overall flavorful although light on the malt, but not bad.
2.6 A basic Scottish ale. A little nutty which adds more to the mouthfeel and smoothness. It’s sweet and light, not rich at all.
3.3 Notes from recent Denver trip: Light brown pour, creamy off white head. Nose is malt. Bittersweet. Middle is soft caramel malt, bready notes. Finish is smooth malt.
2.3 Mild aroma of raisin and malt. Standard burnt bronze color. Light palate and too watery. Bland flavors with caramel standing out a bit. Almost Scottish Light.
3.2 Draft. Dark brown color, tan head. Aroma of nuts and light toast. Taste is caramel with a nutty edge. OK.
3.1 Draft at the brewpub. Pours clear bright copper brown with a fizzy off white head. Tastes like caramel, nutty, roasted malt, and sweet citrus hops. Light/medium body and carbonation. Smells like roasted malt, caramel, nutty, a hint of vinegar, and citrus hops.
3.2 12 oz. bottled March 2015. Pours clear chestnut brown with a lasting film of cream. Mild aromas of cherry cola, toasted nut and cocoa with a slight earthy note. Tastes of caramel cola, cocoa, and cherry. Light-medium body is a little too sweet even for the style.
3.3 1/7/15. 12oz bottle. Thanks, Jen! Amber pour with a small khaki head. Caramel, toffee, doughy aroma. Malty flavor, caramel, toffee. Not bad.
3.0 Fun to have again...since we had a keg at our wedding many years ago. Decent simple Scottish. Amber colored. Caramel and roasted malt forward. A little sweet and thin, but drinkable.
2.7 Tap. Ruby with very little head.light carbonation. Light bodied. Seems weak. No need to try again -- rated with beerbasher/winphone
2.2 Heavy malt body that doesn’t meet expectations. Can taste the roasted malts. Deep red color has no head or aroma to speak of. It’s simply boring.
2.9 Pours a clear amber golden with a white ring around the top edge. Some light caramel and sorghum on the nose (literally on my nose--stuck it in the glass a little too far). Smooth, full texture. The caramel and sorghum noted in the aroma comes through in the flavor with a dimensional quality. A bit of horehound candy there toward the finish.
2.1 On tap at brewery, poured a lightly hazed deep copper hue w/ a medium quickly diminishing beige head and broken lacing. Medium malty aroma. Initial flavor is moderate sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish of short duration. Tastes are sweet tea, lemon, rye and grass. Medium bodied, watery mouthfeel and a light doughy finish.
3.3 A decent drinkable scottish ale. Dark amber pour, light malty nose. Malty and nutty notes. Nice.
3.8 A good common drinking beer not to impressive or stylish but very good. Earthy aromas.
3.3 Carmel like malt flavor and aroma. Slight sweet finish. A bit watery on the palate and slightly flat. Descent but not great.
2.7 Pours deep red/gold with a thick head that laces down the glass. Malty English ale aromas Flavor is malty sweetness with unexpected biscuit caramel nutty malts and earthy english(?) hops Comes across much more dry and complex than other Scottish ales with more hop flavor and bitterness than the style dictates. This is more of a robust red ale than a Scottish.
3.0 12 oz bottle from Tipsy’s into my Funkwerks glass. Brown and lightly hazy with a small, off-white head. Sweet aroma of toasted malts, caramel, toffee, nuts, bread and light hops. Medium sweetness and very light bitterness. Light to medium body with a soft, creamy feel and a smooth, lingering finish.
3.3 Bottle @ FreshCraft, Denver CO. Pours a clear amber beer with a small, off white ring of head on top. Aroma is heavy malty, caramel and nutty. Flavor is moderately sweet, malty and sugary. Body is fairly thin with a short, light sweet finish.
3.1 From the tap poured a brown color with a small amount of head. Sweet malty flavor with a quick finish.
2.8 Draft at brewpub. Pours light brown with a thin khaki head. A little bit of malt influence of the nose. Slightly nutty on the tongue. Finishes clean. Eh!
3.0 Bottle from a beer of the month club thing. Pour is hazy red with white head. Toffee and grass aroma and flavor..Unimpressive.
3.4 On tap. Medium to dark amber pour. Decent off-white head. Aroma of sweet malts with a low hop profile. Medium body. Taste of slightly sweet malts and a pungent lingering bitterness. Not as up front as other Scotch Ales I have had.
2.8 Pours a dark amber with tan head. Smells caramel and sweet malt. Flavor is sweet malt, biscuit, caramel with a mild bitter finish.
3.3 Re rate 07/17 again in Cos. Dropped form 3.5. Ok but this is one of my favorite styles this average but still drinkaly good. "........................had on tap at COS. nice aroma of malt and nut. very easy going down with slight nut, caramel flavors. enjoyed this one; my new go to beer in the airport.
4.0 Laughing Lab Scoth Ale poured a nice deep amber color with a fan head. The head in the std pint was two fingers and kept a consistent one finger with nice lacing for the duration. The smell was malty with hints of caramel and mocha. The taste was true to style with a sweet malt front, and finishing with a toasted note and just enough hop for balance. The beer had nice body and finished clean. Overall this is a solid Scotch Ale and worth the effort to look for
