Broughton Black Douglas (Bottle)

Broughton Black Douglas (Bottle)

Bottle; Pasteurised.
NOTE: The Cask version has a separate listing.
Black Douglas was a famous Scottish Knight and trusted friend of Robert the Bruce. The Bruce and Black Douglas first met only a few miles from the site of Broughton Ales in the Scottish Borders.
We like to think that the dark ruby colour and the full bodied malt flavour of this ale reflect the power and strength of this great Knight.
Major ingredients are:-

Optic Pale Ale Malt, Crystal Malt and Black Malt. Hops used are English grown Challenger, and First Gold

4.0 500ml bottle. Dark, almost black ale but with a slight reddish hue. This is a terrific dark ale with a lovely dry finish. Smooth on the palate and well balanced in terms of flavour. I will definitely buy this one again.
3.7 Pours a light brown color, completely clear, with some reddish undertone. About two fingers of white head quickly settles to just a miniature brim around the edge. The aroma is extremely pleasant - chocolatey smell is complemented by some roasted malts and just a little coffee. The creamy taste has the initial bitter kick, but is followed by moderate bitterness and some roastiness as well. There is another bitter kick in the finish.
2.6 500ml bottle at home. Pours a dark reddish brown, thin, short-lived white head. Aromas of iron and toffee. Taste is sweet. Chocolate at the end. Thin, but ok.
2.5 (Bottle). Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. The taste is malty with a hint of slightly sweet caramel. The taste is quite thin, a bit watery.
3.0 500ml bottle, thanks to Rev. Large tan head, some nice lacing. Dark ruby body. Nose is grass and straw, a little fruit. Flavour of biscuit, dark fruit. Aftertaste not very bitter, almost tangy. Decent mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Tastes like it would go well with Christmas cake.
3.1 Bottle on the train from Wick to Thurso, thanks to Big, 20/10/13. Chestnut brown with a good sized light beige covering. Nose is toffee, biscuit malt, dark fruit tang. Taste comprises toffee, biscuit, dark fruit tones, brown bread dough/cake mix. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation with malt lead bitterness in the finish. Ok.
3.5 500ml bottle from Morrisons, Ayr - dark brown with a reddish tint, good bubbly beige head, fruity malty aroma, sporadic lacing, sweet, malty and berry fruits flavour, cabonation just on the high side of moderate, slightly bitter finish
3.2 Bottle shared with Mr_H a dark ruby beer sweet fruit malty undertones simular to the exciseman 80/ from the same brewery
3.1 Flaska. Doftar karamell, fruktkaka, choklad, fikon och röda bär. Mjuk beska i smaken, där karamell, lime, choklad och svagt av soja ger en trevlig öl.
3.2 Pours a dark red, ruby colour with medium head that eventually dissipates. Not too strong of an aroma, but hints of malty caramel. Body is quite full but not heavy. Taste is sweeter with hints of chocolate caramel and a slightly bitter, malty aftertaste. Not too dry of a beer, very enjoyable!
3.7 Smak och doft av choklad, torkad frukt, sirap, soja, fikon. Mycket sötma med en fadd och bitter beska.
4.1 Bottled, 0.50l. Clear dark ruby color with mid-sized thick tan-like head. Aroma of caramel malt, mild coffee and chocolate, floral hops and plums. Taste starts with sweet caramel, then followed by light roastiness with some chocolate notes. Mouthfeel is syrupy, while aftertaste resembles dark chocolate bitterness. Full body, sticky texture and soft carbonation in palate. That’s the reason for liking knights...
3.2 Quite a pale brown body with a thick white-ish head. Quite a light yet slick mouthfeel, aroma is liquorish, tastes very sweet throughout with the liquorish highlights leading on to a lighter sweety finish. Quite an enjoyable beer with a sweet palate.
3.1 A dark ruby ale rather than any thing else. It has a good head and a medium bodied flavour. Quite toasted, a little bit of smokiness. Medium soft carbonation. Malt and toffee.
3.4 500ml bottle pours dark brown in color with a finger of light beige head that settles quickly leaving little head on the glass. Aroma is slightly smoky with some roasted grains and chocolate. Taste is a roasted grainy bitterness with a chocolate malty sweetness with some smoke. Medium body with light carbonation. A nicely done brew for the style and highly recommended.
3.7 Bottle, pours a light black, aroma is earthy with a bit of a kind of cherry smell, the cherry is in the flavour as well, there is also some roast in there and it is quite nice, this one was fairly enjoyable
3.2 Bottle. This is quite the malt bomb. Toffee, fudge maltiness dominates a light background hop bitterness. A nice winter beer but is a bit messy.
3.8 Bottle. Dark amber red color with light brown, long lasting head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and dark chocolate. Taste is sweety/bitter combination. Sweet in start (but not too sweet) and moderate bitter in finish. Light to medium body with texture somwhere between watery and oily. Nice one.
3.5 50cl bottle from Gordon and MacPhail. Pours a chestnut colour with a good head. The nose has toffee with some ginger biscuits on the finish. The taste has ginger, liquorice and strong malt profile. In fact, there is a lot that reminds me of treacle bread. The palate is medium to full bodied with a tangy texture and a long but slightly cloying finish. Overall, this gets better the more I drink it. It’s slightly unbalanced, but it is complex.
3.8 Bottle@home (0,5l) Head cream colored, shrinking but stays. Color coca cola. Aroma sweet, malt. Taste malt, a little watery. Palate dry finish, soft. Overall good beer, by drinker.
3.7 Brown with a ruby tint. Nice nose with roasted malts showing as caramel and hazelnut. Full bodied with caramel and chocolate on entry, leading to some apples and pears on the finish. Low carbonation and a soft mouthfeel.
3.7 Deep dark ruby body with a foamy white head. Aroma of cherry, caramel. Taste is roasted malt, some cherry again. Body is medium (a bit like the doppelbock style). Nice one.
3.5 I poured it, raised it to my nose, and was hit with a really deep, strong, black cherry and roasted malt smell. And then, the flavor. Wow. The cherry in the aroma isn’t a strong presence in the taste, what I noticed instead was big, smokey, rich malt. Caramel tones, a little coffee, too. This stuff really h as a presence.
3.7 Fruity sweet aroma with some caramel and roast malt. The flavor is similar to the aroma with a little bit more roastiness. nice lively feel and a dry finish. The best part of this beer is holding it to the light and seeing the red hue, beautiful.
2.6 Bottle - pours dark brown with a dissipating head. Has a light malty aroma and a taste of toast. The finish was a little on the thin (watery) side.
4.0 Very dark drown amber color. Head is short and provides some lacing. Malty aroma with scotch and alcohol notes. The taste is somewhat sweet and dry with a nice crisp finish.
1.9 Pours very dark red-brown with a slight light brown head, fading to weak lacing. Nose is fairly weak and typical of the style, with raisins and brown sugar balanced against very floral hops and a touch of wood. Flavor follows suit and is more bland than I expected; none of the "strength of this great Knight" showed up in the beer, it seems. Flavor is standard weak ESB with a little extra caramel and on the short side with the hops. Finish is virtually nothing. Snooze fest.
3.3 Bottle from Tesco. Dark ruby red colour, off-white head. Nose is brown sugar, caramel, bit of fruits. Flavour is sour fruits, caramel malts, bit of brown sugar, slight toastiness. Medium carbonation. Slightly dry finish.
3.7 Serving: 22 oz. bottle from Molly MacPhersons. It pours a nice brown color with a small tan head. The nose has some nice roasty notes. The flavor has light roasted malt, stewed fruit, molasses, and leather. Very drinkable with a light to medium body. Quite nice.
3.9 En mörk mahognyfärgad öl med stora dofter och smaker av torkad frukt, fikon, päron, sirap utan att bli för söt och med en bra lätt beska som förlänger eftersmaken. Riktigt god.
