Sometimes known as Kinmount Willie Oatmeal Stout in the US. Brewed to the exacting standards of Robert Younger, great grandfather of the founder of Broughton brewery. This rich stout is bursting with the flavours of roasted barley and black malt. The excellent hop bitterness is offset by the silky mouth feel of oats. Major ingredients are:- Optic Pale Ale Malt, Black Malt, Roasted Barley, Pinhead Oats. Hops used are English grown Fuggles, First Gold and Challenger.

3.1From the 500 ml. bottle with a Best By date of Nov 12. The pour is dark brown to rich black with a tremendous foamy head that eventually lets go and simmers down. The aroma is subtle with dark roasted malts and oats. The body is pretty good. The taste is mellow and malty at the start and ends with a pleasing bitter hop character.
3.5500ml bottle pours black in color with some red highlights when held to a light source and has a finger of light brown head that retains very well and leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is dark roasted malts and hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is roasted malty bitterness with some chocolate malty sweetness and a moderate hoppy bitter finish. A little thin on the body for this style, but still a good tasty brew.
2.3Bottle (500ml):
Dark, roasted malts and lighter coffee notes along with some dark chocolate to begin with. There is some grain and barely too.
Dark, mahogany brown with a thin & bubbly, half-centimetre head that is light brown & stays throughout.
Dark malts, some milky coffee and a little roasted barely account for most of the taste here but not in a manner that I enjoyed. The finish was a bitter hops one.
Quite thin in body with a lot more carbonation than I would have preferred, it almost feels like I’m drinking a cola.
Really disappointing to me, I didn’t find it particularly well balanced or flavourful with too much fizz, I can’t see what all the fuss is about here. Not a fan.

2.8Bottle from Gordon and MacPhail, Elgin.
Appearance - very dark brown with ruby edges, 1 finger off white head.
Aroma - roast malt, milk chocolate, hint of coffee.
Taste - sweet malt, roast malt, some bitter hop, hint of coffee and chocolate, bit disappointing after inital aroma.
Palate - watery for stout, quite thin mouthfeel, dull finish slight roast and hop bitterness.
Overall - Quite a nice beer, but as a stout rather bland and watery, not much silkiness from the oats, flavours a bit too subdued.
An above-average beer, but as a stout below average.
3.2[500ml bottle, Peckhams Stockbridge, Edinburgh] Dark blackish brown pour with reddish hints. Aromas of chocolate malt and roasted, toasty notes. There is some oat on the taste, along with the dark malts. Coffee bitterness that leads into the finish, which is dry and bitter, although a touch watery [09072007]
3.1Bottle. Pours a dark amber brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty chocolate aroma. Roasted malty chocolate flavor with some hints of caramel Has a roasted malty chocolate finish.
2.7Fairly bland. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights and a small head. Not a bad aroma and flavor but all areas are subdued.
3.3Bottle. Thick tan head, black body. Chocolate, coffee, blackberries. Low bitterness, some sweetness. Silky smooth, well-carbonated, with a dry finish.
2.7Bottle: Poured a black color with a tan head. Aroma is oat and cereal. Taste was flat, very watery, roasted malt, and oat.
3.5500 ml bottle in Edinburgh. Pitch black with a fine, tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, cereals, chocolate, and coffee. Rich roasted flavor, biscuity and with nice cereal grain tastes. Medium to heavier body. Dry and rich, with a roasted, malty, bready finish. Excellent.
3.503/03 0.5 l bottle courtesy of Doggythedog, thanks for sharing! It poured dark brown, almost black body with small brown head. Fine coffee, wood, caramel and peat (even smoked meat) scents perspire from the glass. Similar very fine flavor, except mentioned things showed up some chocolate as well. Balanced between sour and sweet, in yet thinner body, it had sourish coffee and smoked finish. This nice brew made me like the brewery for the beer itself, after I was first attracted with nice labels, well, what can I do when I like Oatmeal Stouts!
3.4Bottle from Peckhams. Black colour, small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, hint of coffee. Flavour of roasted malts, oats, some coffee. Well drinkable.
3.4Bottle from beershop.hr, shared with heavy
Poured an extremely dark brown body with a small off white head. The nose is dominated by coffeeish maltiness that’s quite nice, slightly smokey and meaty. More of the same and I’m not complaining, light tasty roasty maltiness with notes of smoked meat, slightly yoghurty, slightly acidic near the end. Drinkable and likable ’nuff.
3.2Bottled 500ml. -from www.beershop.hr
Black coloured, medium sized brown head, slightly chocolate nose. Roasted malt, chocolate and oat with notes of smoke and coffee. Moderate sweet finish with hint of vanilla. Smooth but a bit watery stout.
2.2Black with an off white head has lacing on the glass. Tastes of chocolate malt was looking quite promising but lacks body
2.7Malt aroma with berries, roasted malt and liquorice. Black colour with a tan lace which clings to the glass. Thin texture. Slight oatmeal wheat flavour with brown sugar. Smooth ale.
3.4500 ml bottle. I thought this tasted a bit ’old’ and to my surprise the neck reveals best by December 2004! So five years beyond then I drink this tasty beer. A pure black pour with a thick white head and lacing down the glass. The aroma is mostly chocolates, a sour roasted aroma as well. The flavor is easygoing; a mix between a sour roasted malt. chocolate, light fruity hops. Probably a bit different than a fresh one, but still nice. The mouthfeel was a bit thin. Overall, nice.
3.2Powerful deep dark nose. Pours dark brown with a disappearing head. Flavour is gentle at first but develops well with some coffee, chocolate and asparagus (weirdly). Mouthfeel a little watery but pleasant enough. A nice little stout.
3.5Black with ruby hints, thin white tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee, malt, dark fruits. Taste is oats, roasted barley, burnt coffee beans.
3.4Deep brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head and a nice bit of oily lace on the side of the glass. Aroma of nice mellow malt, caramel, nuts, marshmallows and even some soap. Medium-bodied; Sweet mellow flavour with a subtle nuttiness tucked in with the malt and a touch of effervescent alcohol flavours. Aftertaste is mild considering the style, but the ABV makes sense with this - very light in all senses. Overall, a good light sweet stout - much more mild than most other Oatmeals - but good to try. While I can get it here stateside, this 50 cL bottle was purchased at McHughes Off-License in Killbarrack, Dublin, Ireland on 20-February-2009, sampled on the other side of the sea at home in Washington on 28-April-2009 when the Capitals advance to the 2nd round of the NHL Playoffs!
3.6Pours mahogany-tinged black into an English pint. Tan micro head with excellent retention leaves slow sheets. Peat and dark pit fruit aromas. Upfront brown bread turning thin and dry. Lasting raisin finish.
2.6Bottle. A light black with a thin soapy white head, that fades quickly and leaves little lacing. A sweet lactos, coffee aroma, with a hint of chocolate. Flavor is rather plain, roasty, sweet,a bit of coffee and coco, the hops seem to be hiding somewhere, I detect little to none, little carbonation, short finish, with a bit of dark bread, and rasins, very thin body. Meh
3.3Typical roasted, malty aroma, with lots of juicyness. Black in appearance, with hints of red. Thinnish caramel coloured head, lots of blackcurrant in the aftertaste.
3.3Bottled, pasteurised, 500ml courtesy of Bill Parish many thanks. Very dark brown with tan head. Reasonable stout, nice roasted malt notes, dark and earthy with a nutty sweet character to it. Finishes just a touch thin, but overall decent enough.
3.4Bottle. Pours a ruby black body with a white head. Light chocolate malt, caramel. oats, licorice, coffee and a floral hoppiness. Good one.
3.0500ml bottle that pours a nice mahogany coloured body under a light brown head, slowly diminishing. Smell of roasted grain. Chocolaty and coffee maltiness together with oatmeal in flavour. Finish of with a peaty touch [bottle from Luvians in St Andrews, 27.10.2008].
3.3Poured a very dark brown color that was nearly black with a nice tan head that dissipated fairly quickly. Aroma was of roasted malt and hints of peat. Flavor was like aroma with the roasted malts flavor and hints of peat, chocolate and the malt sweetness coming through. Mouthfeel was good, though not as silky as some stouts. Drinkability was good.
3.4Kinmount Willie, 500ml bottle. Roasty malt aroma, full of chocolate and toast, along with lighter notes of dark fruits, coffee and tobacco. Black in color with dark brown highlights and a lasting, fine, creamy head. Flavor is nicely toasted and darkly malty, with more chocolate and smoked, roasty flavors, a certain tangy dark fruitiness and raisin quality, finishing dry, grainy and a bit ashy. Thin and moderately low in effervescence, with a fairly light body and very drinkable character, though not impressively complex by any means.
3.3bottle as Kinmount Willie Stout - Pours very dark amber with a thin tan head. It has the expected roast malt aroma. There’s also a hint of chocolate. The flavor is mostly of roast malt as the hops are muted. There’s still that hint of chocolate. It’s medium bodied and finishes a little dry.
