Bruery / Elysian / Stone La Citrueille Cèleste de Citracado

Yams, sugar pumpkins, fenugreek, lemon verbena all made their way into this crazy pumpkin collaboration. There was rye malt (both regular and dark), brown and honey malts, and some C-15 dextrine malt. They also put birch bark in the whirlpool–why not? It’s woodsy and sort of autumnal, after all. La Citrueille was finished with New Zealand Motueka hops. And if you were wondering, the name means the heavenly pumpkin of Citricado, which is the street the Stone digs are on.

3.6 Appearance: Dark woods the color of espresso under a tight khaki head which fades into a thin layer with a few tendrils of lace arcing upwards. Swirls with random spots. Nose: Mint, sage, thyme, black licorice root, fennel. Figs, juniper, and dates. Exotic mushrooms freshly plucked from the earth with a thin dusting of the earth from which they were picked. Dried Italian lemon peel. Chunks of tree bark. Cacao beans whisper. Amazingly aromatic. Cinnamon sticks, gourds, and yams all roasting slowly over an open fire. Palate: My first sip and goosebumps tingle their way up and down my body – Wow! Not too long of a finish – like a gentle passing breeze of all the upcoming flavor sensations wishing me well with one final kiss goodbye. Breath is mint, Italian lemon peel, and fennel. Medium weight with a bright presence. More bright zesty oily lemon peel near the back of each swallow. Alluring presence of sweet smoke weaves in and out. Fire roasted yams and gourds crackle above the flames while cinnamon sugars caramelized. Dense chewy dates and figs dance along the edges while the middle bursts with garden fresh mint, sage, thyme, and fennel. Brilliant. Final Thoughts: Each quaff was Mother Nature’s gift to me and anyone else lucky enough to score a bottle of this beer. Fecking amazing. Like Mother Earth gave birth and it was named La Citrueille Celeste de Citracado. Mind-blowing. I’d love to have another, but alas this was a once in a lifetime offering. 3.0 12oz bottle pours light caramel with lite white head. Pumpkin aroma. Brown sugar and pumpkin taste.
2.4 Reddish brown body with a small off-white head. Port-malt aroma, not fully in balance. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet flavour. Unbalanced and bit awkward.
2.2 Pours a dark brown with a reddish tint. Real thin caramel head that dissipates quickly. Smells of lemon citrus, malt, and licorice. Tastes a mild sweetness upfront with a bitter licorice and malt finish. Really an unremarkable brew.
3.0 Pours an amber copper with a quickly dissipating root beer head. Aromas of caramel malt and Belgian yeast with an underwhelming citrus hop bouquet. Mouth feel is mildly scrubby on the back of the tongue, but a little creamy on the front. No pumpkin, some coffee flavor and acidity. Finishes a bit like a lager. Easy drinking beer, but really not a whole lot going on. You’d think with these three breweries combining efforts it’d be a better product. Pretty disappointed overall.
3.2 bottle at parker pie, vt. unclear medium dark brown with a nice beige head, decent retention and lacing. grassy, herbal, spices, piney, some sweetness, fruity dark caramel malts, molasses, soy, balsamic, pepper, cardamom, toasted coconut. average carbonation, light body - some texture. quite complex brew - just because there’s a mash-up of so many spices/herbs/fruits... all and everything... it doesn’t blend well.
2.9 Bottle at Parker Pie. Shared by czar, thanks! Slightly hazy amber brown with a low white head. Aroma of spices, caramel, pumpkin, spices, lemon and citrus. Taste is about the same along with mineral/earthy notes and hints of grass. Mouthfeel is thin, slightly watery. It’s complex, but it doesn’t get along together. Meh.
3.4 Bottle. Pours deep amber with a beige head. Toasted and nutty malts, medium sweetness, and pumpkin seeds. Odd, but decent enough.
3.5 At a tasting, Thanks eyes_wide_shut and YK23, clear very dark red colour, aroma of wood, fenugreek, anise and lots odf licorice, flavour of coffee, cola, dark bread, some licorice and nutmeg. Interesting and unusual.
3.6 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks eyes_wide_shut and YK23. Pours murky brown with tan wave. Aroma of fenugreek, yam, sweet spices and some anise. Malty and tad dry taste, potato and wood bark. Light body, bonefire-baked potato finish. Good.
3.1 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks eyes_wide_shut and YK23. Deep red color. Aroma of a bit of pumpkin, verbena and some more spices, malt and hints of chocolate. Sweetish flavor with malt, some pumpkin, caramel, spices and herbs and a bit of roasty notes. Finishes drier. Medium-bodied. Not bad and pretty interesting.
3.7 11th December 2011 Clear dark red - brown beer. Good pale tan head. Light fresh crispy palate. A refreshing strong citrus is a suprise coming off a dark beer! Lemongrass and a touch of lime. A cream - soda kinda cream vanilla. Minerals. Semi dry finish. Refreshing.
3.5 12oz bottle pours clear brown with ruby red hues and a semi loose tan head of foam. The aroma offers up a little bit of dark roasted malts and coffee flowing into ginger-ish sort of herbal notes and a berry sensation. The taste moves from moderately roasted malts and then to a bit of berry, cherry and raisin fruitiness. Above that is a sort of spicy woodnote and maybe some ginger root. At times it seems a little chocolate like and coconut cut with very thin lemon peel like notes. Pretty nice but it seems to struggle to hold all of the flavors together.
3.4 Another year old bottle sitting at Ryan and Casey Liquors Greenfield, MA. Paid $3.75 for a 12 oz. bottle. Got it because I missed it when originally released. Pours a dark brown color with no head at all. Aroma is very herbal with ginger, sweet potato and the odd spices that that bottle speaks of. Similar to a pumpkin beer, yet has a sweet potato yam flavor without question. Not bad for the age. I would say this may have diminished just a bit after all this time. Glad I had a chance to try it.
3.5 12 oz. bottle from Mega Liqour 8, Alhambra, CA. Brown color. Off white head (not much). Aroma’s: (sweet) herbs, slightly medicinal, verbena?, slightly toasted. Flavor is roasted, medium sweet, herbal. Light bodied. Finishes with a herbal bitterness. Interesting for sure.
3.5 Bottle to snifter. Looks good; a fairly opaque brownish-black with fluffy light neigh head that dissipates into lacing fairly quickly. Smells of pumpkin, spices, and citrus. Tastes like it smells with an. Average mouthfeel. Interesting, and not in a bad way.
3.7 355mL bottle to taster Nutmeg, chocolate, pumpkin, yam, roots, ginger, and toasted malts. Clear amberish red with a thin creamy tan head. Very gingery pumpkin with some bitterness. Mouthfeel is silky and smooth.
3.9 Bottle - Toasted malts, chocolate and spices. Complex but sweet and pleasant nose much like gingerbread. Dark brown and clear with a off white head. Pumpkin, molasses and gingerbread. Mellow bitterness, a great dark pumpkin beer.
4.0 Bottle from Stone Brewing in South Park: Poured a dark amber hue with a tiny formation of foam head. The aroma was phenomenal with a pure scent of herbs perhaps sage, and has an abundant aroma of roast coffee bean or strong fragrant black tea. As for the drink, a smooth and well balanced blend of unknown flavors probably due to the foreign ingredients such as fenugreek, lemon verbena, and birch bark really make this an easily quaffable beer yet a flavorful and memorable beer recipe. Although, it does come across as a little watery in the finish, it still leaves behind a roasted aftertaste and in itself is a truly unique concept.
3.3 Bottle: poured a dark brown with an off white head. Aroma is weird mix of veggie and spices. Taste is caramel malts, veggie, and sweet finish.
3.4 Bottle from Asahiya. Flowery aroma, with miso notes. Dark brown, clear, very little head. The pumpkin is there, the spices even more; mid goes tangy and bitter, with some prune and spices (fenugreek!, birch bark); finish is sweet and satisfying. Thin-medium bosy. I’m not a big fan of pumpkin brews, but this one is fine.
3.1 From a bottle shared at lost dog. Pours a cloudy dark cola color with a tan head. Aroma of fenugreek. Notes of cloves. Bitter spice finish.
3.5 $2 single at Lemon Tree. I find after reading an article about the increase in pumpkin acreage in Illinois. Odd, what? Big head in the pour. A brown beer underneath, dark but looks clean otherwise. A lot of flecks in the foam. Smell is a little bit of pumpkin pie spice and fennel. Taste is mainly a lightly spiced brew, but at least the spices aren’t in your face. Malts don’t have much of a chance. I’m not bowled over, per se, but it’s saved by being really well made. This blend of spices might even make a good soda.
3.5 12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear amber brown color with a medium sized yellowish off white head. The aroma has pumpkin, but it is mostly hidden by the spices, citrus, grass, herbal and floral notes. Caramel malt adds some sweetness. The flavor has the caramel malt, lightly toasted notes, pumpkin with the usual spices with a strong herbal grassy presence. Medium bodied.
3.2 Bottle shared by Darrell. Thanks man. The beer is dark brown / orange with a sparse, beige head that leaves random traces of lacing on the tulip. The aroma brings abundant spices, including cinnamon, nutmeg. Smells like autumn. The aroma offers a lot of sweetness as well. Odd flavor, though not necessarily off or bad. Some Fall spices, light malt body, present sweetness. Thin body with adequate carbonation. Overall, a decent Autumn seasonal, but not something I need to have again. 3.5 Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Nose is lemons, pumpkin, sage, pecans and fennel. Taste is sweet at first with mild bitterness. No frills here. Nearly bland. Mouthfeel is soft yet crisp and the body is light with a long finish.
3.1 Figured a pumpkin and yam beer over the T’day weekend would be appropriate. Poured a medium brown, slight head faded fast. Aroma was lightly nutty and vaguely spicy. Flavor matched. It really came across as a sort of uninspired brown ale, with a finish that was spiced, but sort of a vague muddle that only came off as being bitter as opposed to anything interesting. Perhaps it fell off some over time, but I can’t help but think that this was an interesting experiment that was ultimately a miss.
3.8 2011 bottle gifted to me recently; unintentionally aged. Translucent, dark brown pour. Verbena and birch wood aroma. Slightly sweet and earthy flavors from the yams well balanced by the hops and verbena. Roasty malt. And a pretty clean finish. Well, done but a little faded from age.
