Bruery Terreux Tart of Darkness

Bruery Terreux Tart of Darkness

Tart of Darkness is a traditional stout that we aged in used oak barrels from The Bruery that had previously housed beers such as Cuivre™ or Black Tuesday®. We then brought them over to Bruery Terreux, added our special blend of souring bacterias and wild yeasts and watched nature take its course. The result is a perfectly tart yet awesomely dark and roasty, sour stout. Not a style you will see very often, and in our opinion, not a style seen often enough. This unique stout has notes of tart plums, roasted coffee, vanilla and oak.

3.5 During Black Christmas 2018. Hazy brown. Barrel and cherries. Some booze. Quite sour. Ok.
3.6 Tap at Brasserie V. Well done for the style, the hard to nail sour black ale. While it still has some oily devolved black malt tone, it is clean and drinkable too. Vinegary. Good.
3.8 Bottled 750ml. -at Kiselo Druženje 2018. Brown/black coloured, small to medium sized off-white head, malty fruity nose. Distinct sourness, berries, fruity, light sweet notes of caramel and pleasant woody (barrel) touch in the finish. Nice one.
4.2 2014 Bottle from brewberry, paris. Almost black color, small tanned head. Aroma has red wine, some sour notes, some earth notes. Sour body, some grapes, some farm notes, hint of roasted mats.
3.7 Enormous thanks Matt! Colla body, off white head. Full aroma mixing big malty and berry notes with a solid tartness behind. Similar taste, good malty backbone, berries/blueberries, a very big tartness, strong funk. Nice overall.
4.2 This is a standout beer for sour lovers out there; I honestly don't detect the familiar roasty elements of a stout. This one is all sour and jammy fruits for me. I don't care how you classify it; it is damn good! Not cost cutter prices here. $$$ 375ml bottle.
4.1 A 750ml bottle, 2016 vintage, bottled on 23rd March 2016. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass. It was a clear cola dark brown with a just over one finger tanned head that dissipated quickly and left only sparse to no lacing. Aromas were tart, plum, raisins, moderate roastiness and oak with hints of vanilla and coffee. Tastes of tart and sour plums, oak and an interesting and nice roastiness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall they’re calling it a Sour Stout, but I think its more appropriately a Dark Sour, as although signs of a Stout are there, it’s the sourness that dominates while the roastiness compliments it. But whatever you want to call it, it is well balanced and the flavours just match each other really well.
3.8 Pours cola brown with thin white head. Scent of dark berries (blackberries, blueberries), some acidity. Taste is similar. Strong tart blackberry flavor. Finish is quite sour. Very good for slow sipping.
4.2 75cl bottle at home. Dark brown, foamy beige head that doesn't last. Nicely oaked vanilla notes on top of a vinous Flemish red ale with really (!) acidic berry and cherry fruits. No noticeable stout notes imho. Aftertaste lingers nicely, cherry acidic. Medium body, low carbonation, soft and dry mouthfeel.
3.9 Bottle 0,75. Pours black with medium quickly diminishing beige head. Black berries, black currant, citrus, vinegar. Quite nice. Medium body and soft carbonation.
4.0 Keg at BrewDog Camden. Really dark purple, with a purple head. Strong aroma of blackberries, currants, some acidity and straw. Quite a sour flavour, and the tart elements of the fruit come to the fore. Really nice.
3.7 750mL bottle drunk 12/9/17. Dark mahogany, undetermined clarity. Light tan head atop fades quickly to cover/ring. Lactic acidity is prominent but allows plentiful, poignant berry and vinous notes in, as well. Tobacco, baker's chocolate and very light vanilla on the end, with no alcohol character and a surprising lack of any real aggressive notes. Barrel isn't overdone unlike so many other Bruery beers. No toasted oak notes, thankfully. Quite nicely balanced in the mouth. Not too much acetic character, no big balsamic notes. Vanilla and tobacco notes provide plentiful dryness while tons of berries and moderate acidity linger on the finish. Tannic structure to the body with a malty, somewhat soft at times texture and moderate, engaging carbonation. No alcohol or raw acidity on the finish. I think the relatively low abv (for the Bruery this is like an NA beer) and restraint on the barrel really wins out here.
3.8 Panel kwaśnych piw z The Bruery w MQ. Aromat czekoladowy, owocowy, jagodowy. W smaku kwas raczej stonowanu w porównaniu do reszty, choć i tak pokrywa niemal całą "stoutową" stronę piwa. Mocno owocowe, a przy tym przyjemnie gęstawe. Obok Griffona, jak na razie najlepsze.
4.7 butelka 2014. czarne, klarowne, z refleksami, od nalania bez piany. w aromacie owocowe, wiśniowe, drewniane, lekko palone, waniliowe, kawowe, po ogrzaniu wyraźnie kwaśny aromat. w smaku kwaśne, gęstsze, palony finisz, lekko kawowy, taninowe. niuansowe, petarda
4.4 A little bit rustical notes, pralines, semi sourness, tarty, cherries in choclate. Smooth, good balanced.
Wow
3.9 Pours cola brown with a tan head that quickly fizzes away. Aroma of vinegar, blackberry, and cherry. Strong tart berry flavor with some roasted malt, and wood in the background. Very nice beer!
3.5 February 2018 - Friday bottleshare at Partizan Brewery. As 'Bruery Terreux Tart of Darkness', 2015 edition. Opaque black, foamy off-white head leaves dotted lacing. Aroma is tart berries, blackberry, a little vinegary acetic. Body is light and frothy with tingly carbonation. Taste is tart, pretty acidic, tangy soured blackberries, little vinegary. Realistically not many people could drink a 750 of this – it boggles my mind that they serve it in such a big bottle. Have always been interested to try this, and it is decent in small amounts, but at £25 it's certainly not worth the price. (7-4-7-3-14=3.5)
3.6 2Feb2018 Sweet, dark fruits, prunes, cherries, sweet oak, dark malts, prunes. Hazy, very dark brown, tiny, creamy, off-white head. Medium sour. Sour citrus fruits, lemon peel, lime juice, lemon pith, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Beautiful aroma, somewhat boring in palate. Bottle shared at Partizan - thanks to The_Osprey!
3.7 Bottle shared in Bermondsey / cheers to Danny. Pours clear reddish brown with a bubbly, khaki head. Plenty of vinegar in the nose, leathery berries, old wood, blackberry. Light sweet flavour with moderate woody dryness, super tartness, more berries, wood, hints of brown sugar, earth. Medium bodied with fine, spritzy carbonation. Quenching finish, a bit of balsamic vinegar, loads more tart and leathery berries. Fun.
3.5 Bottle shared at at the partizan rot box tasting. Many thanks. A dark chestnut brown coloured pour with a loose beige head. Aroma is spicy sour cherry, marzipan, mould funk. Flavour is composed of aggressive puckering sour, lemon Citra, bitter lemon, brown citric acid. Palate is mouth watering pucker, bitter raspeberry. Moderate carbonation vanilla.
4.8 Tasty and clean sourness. Unfortunately there is no „stout” in this sour stout but I do not consider it a big flaw.
3.5 750 ml bottle, near black appearance, no head. Aroma of light vinegar, cherries skins, plum skins. Flavor is plums, sour cherry, mild oak vinegar, acidic aftertaste. Really nearly too much vinegar for my palate. I guess it is good for what it is. Depends on what you enjoy.
3.6 Poured from bottle thanks Airforcehops dark cherry with no head and nice lacing. Aromas of light funk tart berry light oak. Taste is tart fruit grapeskin oak and tannins.
2.6 Poured from a bottle, a cloudy dark brown color with a nose of brettanomyces, a bit of disappointment neither a good stout nor a good sour, light body with a tart nondescript taste and a brettanomyces finish.
3.7 Restrained aroma in a thin black pour. Tart taste is a little one dimensional to start but builds to a complex and subtle beer that is eminently enjoyable in the end. Another winner from the Bruery.
2.8 2015 bottle, very dark brown beer, almond colored head. Aroma is toasted batley and goat. Taste is vineagar, hydrochloric acid, lemon juice, lime juice. There’s no malt left now, just acid. Palate is medium, carbonation average.
3.5 Z: nikly, ale da si? wyczuc jaka? brzoskwinie, morele, co? ciemnego. W smaku kwas wchodzi na poczatku i lagodnieje z czasem. Raczej w jasne owoce. W posmaku pestkowe, sciagajace.
3.8 W aromacie skórka agrestu, mokra skóra. W smaku kwasność, agrest, jakby ciemne owoce, skórka od śliwki.
3.8 Butelka. Czarna pozeczka, skóra, beczka. Sporo tanin. Średniej wielkości cierpkość.
