Buckbean Black Noddy Lager

Buckbean Black Noddy Lager

This is a traditional Bavarian Schwarzbier style with a deep color and a smooth rich flavor. Specially roasted malts give the black color and mild roastiness to this beer while Munich, Caramel, and Honey malts add depth and character to the malt flavor. Moderately hopped with noble aroma varieties to achieve a perfect balance and a clean finish this beer is a perfect complement to smoked, grilled, and roasted foods, flavorful meats and cheeses or chocolate desserts.

2.3 Hazy dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and cough syrup. Flavor is medium sweet. Sweet finish. 210312
1.5 Can. Unclear dark amber/brown with small beige head. Aroma is malt, light roasted malts and cough syrup. Flavour is malt, light roasted malts, chocolate, little sour, little acid, caramel and medium sweet. Possible infected.
1.5 tall boy can. pours a hazy deep brown with a large, creamy, tan head. tangy, sour nose. dusty, sour flavor. possible infection or something. tastes like 3/4 purple grape soda 1/4 dark beer. too bad...i was really looking forward to having something nice from this brewery since they have since closed down.
3.4 From Beerlicious iPhone app: Always looking for a nice canned beer for the beach. Black and clear color with a rocky tan head. Light bitter notes to start and finish with a short sour burst. Light body with an oily creamy feel. Astringent finish.
2.4 16 oz. can from Hayduke. We had it together via facebook chat. This poured like a stout, albeit a bit thinner. The nose was hard to find and had dark fruit and roasted notes with some chocolate and peat. The first sip is of an odd beer. Fruit and, somehow, vinegar. By midglass I am convinced this is infected. There are wild yeast flavors that just don’t belong in a Schwarzbier. The finish included some chocolate but that vinegar and wild yeast never left. Infected. Unfortunately. I wanted to taste what the beer should taste like.
3.3 Over all, this was solid schwarzbier. Bold roast, but with a nice even blend of caramel, hop, honey and smoke. A nice dry finish. Well done!
3.6 ~Sharp biscuity malt aroma with spicy earthy hop, and light aroma. ~Pours black with red highlights and thick lasting off white head. ~Roasty malt flavor with spicy earthy hops. ~Med light body, med CO2, roasty bitter finish. ~Great aroma, Flavor fell a bit short. A bit too roasty and makes it off balance. Some sweetness would be nice. Still well done and enjouable brew.
3.3 In a can. Pours a brown colour with a thin, light tan head. Aroma of roasty malt, chocolate and caramel. An odd sour flavour of lemon juice and balsamic vinegar with coffee and chocolate also. Lingering lemon and grapefruit sourness. Moderate carbonation and light CO2 prickle.
2.4 Date: July 20, 2011 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting Appearance: clear dark brown, fine tan head, drippy lace Aroma: sweet chocolate aroma, hint of roasted Flavor: roasted and chocolate flavor, touch of metalic with a growing tartness Aroma: 5/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 4/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 8/20 Rating: 2.4/5.0 Drinkability: 4/10 Score: *+ /4 I would like to rerate this beer.
3.3 Coldwater, powdery, sweet raisin aroma. So-so can, although I like the raven logo. Clear, but you can only see through the brown-black beer at an angle. Frothy tan head which collapses fairly quickly. A little tangy, a little licorice, a little coffee. A good session brew, but sort of simplistic. The beer goes flat too quickly, light body. Finishes off quickly with a bit of chalk and roast twang. Fermentation Market, Tallahassee, Christmas 2011.
3.0 Pours opaque dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of roast and dust. Taste is fairly dry with some anise, roast and metallic notes, and a sour finish.
3.4 Can. Black and poured with a small head. Slightly sulphuric although the malty presence nearly covers this up. There also a trace of sourness. Not one to rave about.
3.4 Tallahassee, Fl - Fermentation Market - 16 oz can. Thick cola-like dark brown pour, bubbly off0white head that fades after the pour. Pleasant aroma with some vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Nice flavor - pick up some unsweetened chocolate, some biscotti-like sweetness. Hints of coffee and vanilla in the back end. Fades just a bit near the end. Mouthfeel is about as thick as a schwarz should be. Much better than expected.
1.8 hazy dark mahogany with a wisp of beige head; medium body with high carbonation. aroma: sour minerality and astringent black malt. taste: very sour, black malt, and some leafy hop bitterness. some harsh minerally hop character comes out as i acclimate to the sourness.
2.5 Black/Deep ruby with a thick off white head. Aroma is lightly yeasty, mild malt, caramel, lightly roasty. Taste is a bit tart, mild roastiness, mild chocolate.
2.0 Coming out of a fridge cold, all I could smell was sourness of an infected sort. The taste pretty much followed this, so I let it warm up hoping it would get better. It did, but not much. There was a little bit of roasted chocolate malt flavor, but it was swamped out by the overpowering sourness. I’m not sure if I got a bad can of this or not, but it doesn’t taste like any Schwartzbier I’ve ever had. Given that, I will endeavor to find another can of this and re-rate it. **I now see that many others have complained about this sourness as well. I went back in the ratings and the mentions of sourness dropped off dramatically the further back I went, so I’m suspecting a quality control problem in recent batches. Hopefully they’ll get this resolved since this seems to have potential and Buckbean is a good brewery!
0.9 Can - brusin ales - pours a very dark brown with a thin head. Aroma is fairly weak. I’m getting some meaty notes which is weird. Taste is terrible. It’s bitter and sour. I was totally grimacing while drinking this one. The palate is thin and watery which makes the bitter sour taste worse. Drainpour!
2.2 Tasted on 10/21/11 from a 16oz can. Pours an opaque dark brown with an average tan head that leaves thin lace. The nose is more caramel than anything else, with slightly burnt and roasted notes, and hints of earthy yeast and spicy hops. The flavor is more of the same with an added chocolate note, but there is something sour here as well, and I think that perhaps there is something wrong with this beer. The body is light and fully fizzy with a short finish that has some chocolate and rosted notes, but is more sour than anything. I will try to find this beer again in the future to re-rate.
0.9 Purchased from beersofeurope.com and attempted to drink 19/911. Not sure if I had an off can? Couldn’t find a use by date but this was truly awful! Reminded me of an off pint of Harveys porter I had last year and swiftly returned. Sickly sweet, treacle valour with nauseating sweaty palate. Honestly one of the worst beers I’ve drunk in a long long time. If this is what it’s supposed to taste like then I can’t imagine selling many? And black lager? Come on really? Does such a thing really exist as it tastes as far away from a lager as one could imagine. One to avoid at all costs.
2.4 Can thanks to Ben. Pours a clear near black with a a light brown head that dissipates quickly and completely. Aroma has notes of dark grains and bread, but also has some sour stone fruits. Flavor is similar with some roast and dark bread, but a good amount sour fruits that ruined the beer.
3.2 The aroma has toasted malt and grassy hops. The appearance is medium brown with a large head. The taste is dark and roasted like the aroma. The palate is smooth but a bit thin. Overall a good beer that is simple but effective.
2.6 aroma is roasted cacao and mildly mildew-y. tastes is what you would expect, lots of cocoa and light coffee notes. a hint of tobacco and smoke in there too. a little of an oily finish on the tongue. i like that it finishes lighter than a stout or porter would. then again, it doesnt make much of an impression either.
3.7 a very fine beer with a definite nutty feel to it. only slightly toasted but it has a great flavor of malts and the right amount of hops. brings out a wide assortment of flavors that make it ideal for the cool autumn days.
3.1 Can shared by a friend. Pours a hazy red color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of nutty notes and caramel. The taste is tart malts, berries and nutty notes. Medium bodied. Seems like its a bit off.
3.3 Can. I don’t understand where the sour came from with some other listers. My had nothing sour about it. Nice dark brown with hints of copper when held to the light. Nice burnt nut aroma and a dark toast taste. Great beer.
2.3 Tall can. Dark brown, thick looking beer with a decent tan head. The aroma is a positive... Malty, rich, some caramel , chocolate. That is the end of what is good. The beer initially tastes okay in the mouth but releases a strong sour off note with an unpleasant finish. I did not enjoy at all ... Almost a drain pour, but the aroma and appearance are positives.
2.9 Can at home from Cask P&K. Poured a dark brown, with an average beige head. Not too much to it, bit of roast, hint of smoke, but otherwise fairly bland.
3.3 16oz can courtesy of Dschiller. Pours an attractive, true to style brown-black, with a thin beige head. Interesting soapy toffee aroma. Relatively solid example of the style. Really easy to drink, rather one-dimensional. The honey malt complements the darker malts really well, making me think this would be a great firkin beer. Grows on you. Lacks complexity, a little watery. Overall a decent beer...but seems a little off.
2.3 poor is a thin dark without much head. smell is a little roasted with a little sweet. taste is like licking the inside of tin can roasted in a fire washed in miller lite.
2.1 7/26/11. 16oz can. Dark brown pour, lots of red when held to the light, under a small tan head that fades fast and laces a teensy bit. A bit of chocolate and roast in the aroma but it’s loaded with diacetyl - huge buttery mess. Light chocolate and roasted malt flavor... easy-drinking schwarz but even the flavor is buttery diacetyl. Man, this is a messup.
