Budweiser Budvar Dark is a retro-beer. This is because it has been designed to come as close as possible to how all Bohemian and Bavarian lagers tasted before bottom fermented golden lager stole the show in the mid nineteenth century. Now, thanks to Budweiser Budvar, the Darkside is moving centre stage again.
Enjoying the same brewing cycle as Original, Dark gets its delicious roasted flavour from being brewed from three types of malt; Munich, Caramel and Roasted.

Roasty aroma. Light bodied. Slightly caramelly and coffeeish. Nutty finish. Light bitterness. Highly drinkable. Very decent dark lager.

Plechovka z Lidla. Cokoladova karamelova vona. Farba kavy pena bledohneda ale rychlo padla. Mierne kyslasta prazena meltova chut. Mierne slafka, hladka. Na konci vodova.
500ml bottle at home. Pours a cola-like blackish brown with a thin off white head. Nose is nutty, very reminiscent of a brown ale...some brown bread and an overall malt sweetness, no hops in the aroma at all. Flavour is malt forward, nutty, caramel, some slight coffee notes, with a sticky oily finish.
[Can (500ml)] As 'Czechvar Dark Lager'. Pours a deep ruby-brown with a large lasting frothy tan head. Lightly toasted malt aroma along with hints of nuts, honey, coffee and caramel. Malty flavour along with nuts, caramel and coffee again, not too sweet which is nice. Light bitter finish. Light to average bodied. Decent enough, easy to drink.
Pours chestnut brown, white head.
Strong malty aroma.
Taste i roasted malts, caramel, brown sugar notes, hint of sweet licorice. Finish of ryebread.
Aangenaam donker biertje. Aangename afdrank, licht bitter

Heavily carbonated deep brown body, pretty good solid beige foam on top. Roasted coffee on the nose, a bit of molasses, made thin by too much carbonation. Taste is smooth chewy roasted malt, finishing a little sugary. Not bad for a macro dark lager but a little thin and overcarbonated.
Ciemnobrunatne, klarowne, piana średnio obfita drobna, beżowa.
W aromacie średnio intensywnie, dosyć słodko: na pierwszym planie wyraźne ziarno kakaowca, czekolada deserowa, później nuty palone z wyraźnym przypalonym spodem ciasta drożdżowego. Świetny aromat.
W smaku półsłodkie ze średnio-niską palono-ziołową gorzką kontrą. Retronosowo mocniej wyczuwalna jest paloność, kawa zbożowa, karmel. Wydaje się nieco wodniste, jednak przy tym ekstrakcie nie powinno być to zaskoczeniem.
Bardzo solidne tmave, chyba najlepsze w z grona tych niekraftowych.

Bottle @ Grand Mothers Restaurant, Bratislava. Nice head with good duration. Color is dark brown. Aroma and taste are roast malt, little coffee, caramel and hops.
Nice roasty finish.
Plechovka z obchodu. Vôňa kavova. Farba čierna. Chuť sladkásta kavovo čokoládová.
Pours black or almost so, with a quite big but quickly receding greyish head. Not much retention. Not much intensity in a relatively simple and clean aroma: bark bread/bread crust, slight coffee grains hints, some underlying cola-like sweetness and a touch of fruitiness. Taste notes follow the aroma, again with not much intensity. There's more sweetness than style average with a rather strong cola-like softness/sweetness, probably a bit too dominant. Finish and aftertaste are still rather dry and bitter though. Overall, not so distant from a dunkel. Quite light bodied with light to medium carbonation, quite easygoing. Ok, not remarkable.

0,5l bottle (as "Budvar Tmavý Ležák"). A dark brown/black beer with a thin brown dissapearing head and low carbonation. Aroma has notes of toasted malts, coffee and bread. Slightly bitter flavour with notes of toasted malts, wood, caramel, dark chocolate and coffee. Toasted aftertaste.
Barva tmava az cerna. Pena nizka a hned pryc. Vune kava cokolada. Chut karamelova, kavova, horka cokolada. Stredne plne telo. Trochu sladkeho citrusu v dojezdu. Skoro by se chtelo rict, ze na ceske tmave pivo je to dobre. Cekal jsem to asi jeste sussi a lehci.
Optisch tief dunkelbraun mit orangeroten Reflexen. Die bräunliche, feinporige bis cremige Schaumkrone wirkt sehr flaumig, sehr stabil und unglaublich langlebig. Die Duftaromatik überzeugt mit deutlicher Süße, ganz zarter Herbe und wunderbaren Aromen von Haselnuss, dunkler Schokolade und Holz. Der Antrunk wirkt sehr angenehm, zart rezent und wunderbar röstig bis schokoladig herb. Am Gaumen sehr schön röstaromatisch mit leicht süßlichen Dörrobstaromen und Noten von dunkler feinherber Schokolade. So entsteht eine Aromatik von Rumpflaume in Schokolade, Rumrosine in Schokolade oder Mon Chéri. Obwohl die Aromen nicht zu komplex werden, machen sie doch einen sehr kräftigen und voluminösen Eindruck. Bei nur 4,7 % Alkohol ist das schon beeindruckend. Mundgefühl und Süffigkeit sind aufgrund der tollen Ausgewogenheit und der angenehmen Aromatik ausgezeichnet! Im Nachtrunk hält die Aromatik sehr lange an und eine feinherbe dunkle Schokonote bleibt scheinbar ewig stehen.
Fazit: Was Österreicher überhaupt nicht können und Deutsche nur teilweise können, können Tschechen dafür umso besser - Ein sehr sehr gutes Dunkles Lager!
0,5 l Flasche. Dunkles braun, stabiler, grobporiger, hellbrauner Schaum mit schöner Gardine. Riecht intensiv nach Röstmalz, dunkle Schokolade. Schmeckt malzig süß, leicht herb, aber etwas dünn, aber schön geschmeidig auf der Zunge.
Kolsvart med fint beige skum. Doftar lite malt (metalliskt). Smaken fylligt mjuk, lite söt. Eftersmaken tämligen kort, lite söt med rostad malt, någon bismak på slutet.
Can (50 cl) from Systembolaget. Clear reddish brown, beige head. Roasted malt aroma with notes of tobacco. Dry, medium bitterness. Pretty dull.
Svart med lys brunt skum. Lukter nøtter, kaffe og noe kakaobønner. Middels fylde. Maltig, lett bitter smak. Mørk sirup, mørkt brød, lett bitter kaffe og mørk sjokolade.
Barwa rubinowa, klarowna. Piana beżowa, średnio pęcherzykowata. W smaku i aromacie lekka palność, skórka od chleba. Goryczka niska.
2 finger dark beige head. Stays for a good while.
Deep mahogany to bordeaux coloured beer.
Aroma of raisins, muscovado sugar, rye bread, syrup loaf, hint of vanilla, caramel, and a super smooth overall maltiness.
Taste of syrup loaf, liquorice, caramel, light metallic hints, dark chocolate, fresh yeast and hints of red berries.
Mouthfeel is smoothly bodied with a medium-high carbonation. Low bitterness. Very drinkable. Slightly oily and a bit watery finish.
Overall: Solid stuff. Sure, it could have more of everything but at 4,7% I'd say it's performing more than adequately well. Not bad, at all.
Lager dunkel. Oscuro casi negro. Poca espuma. Gusto equilibrado tirando a dulce. Caffe torrefacto, malta ahumada, algo de barrica, chocolate amargo. Retrogusto un poco seco y amargo. Regular.
Väldigt mörk färg till att börja med. Hade gissat på porter om jag inte visste vad det var. Doft av russin, bränt socker och viss syra. Tyvärr lite vattnig smakbild med smaker av bränt bröd och med ihängande bäska.
Aromat: pumpernikiel, karmel, ciemne pieczywo, ciasto czekoladowe, kawa zbożowa, skórka chleba. Kurde, aromat prawie jak w porterze bałtyckim.
Smak półwytrawny, tu już bardziej w stronę nut kawowych, orzechowych. Ciemne pieczywo w tle.
Pełnia niska, nagazowanie średnie, goryczka niska.
Dark brown, almost black, with a creamy beige head. Aroma is mild roast and a hint of coffee. Taste is an excellent blend of roasted malts, coffee, a touch of dark chocolate and a gentle bitterness. This is perfection.
Aromat palone ziarno zboże lekka marihuana. W smaku nawet nieźle wytrawne jest goryczka. Spodziewałem się gorszego.
Can 500ml. Actually surprisingly watery… Toasted bread, malts, some caramel. Low bitterness, almost a bit wooden not in the finish.
