Bullfrog Edgar IPA

Bullfrog Edgar IPA

As the story goes, I was redesigning our IPA to be bigger and better. As it came together, it started to take on a life of its own. After much deliberation and several pints of our new creation, we decided to name him after the master of the macabre, Edgar Allen Poe, as a tribute to his aptly named short story "Hop Frog". As Edgar fermented and spewed his almost abusive hop aroma throughout the pub, his legend and our thirst grew until finally one day, he was released into the world. We hope Edgar amuses you as much as he has us but stay on his good side, because, much like the story, this Hop Frog bites back!

3.9 First off...Great Beer! Had this in the brewery and it's cool place. This beer is full of fruity hoppy flavor and aromas. It's a winner.
3.9 Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance –The beer is served a very hazy yellowish orange color with a tiny fizzy white head that fades almost instantly, with it leaving only a trace of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is big of a fruity smell with tons of tropical fruits and citrus, being a mix of tangerine, orange, pineapple and mango. Along with these smells comes some aromas of a grapefruit hop as well as a little bit of a grassy smell, overall producing a rather inviting aroma. Taste – The taste begins with some of the tropical fruit and citrus flavors that were hinted at in the nose, but while quite heavy in the nose they are not as heavy in the taste. These are joined upfront by a decent showing of a grapefruit hop as well as some more bready and cracker like flavors. The bready flavors fade as the taste advances and are accompanied by a decrease in the tropical fruits as well. All the while however, the cracker and grapefruit hop flavors get stronger, giving a much drier taste profile to the brew. The grapefruit really surges at the end and is joined by a bit of grass and pine, with the mix of flavors leaving a rather pleasant and crisp bitter flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is rather thin for a brew of 7.5 % with a carbonation level that is a bit on the higher side. For the more crisp and hopped flavors of the brew, the feel is rather fantastic with it really giving the flavors a sharp and refreshing feel. Overall – A quite tasty and rather more refreshing and crisp IPA. A rather nice brew overall.
4.2 Draft at the source. Hazy pale yellow color, huge white head. Aroma of lemon > grapefruit > pineapple. Taste is bright and softly sour tropical fruit. Delicious.
3.7 Pale golden yellow pour thin white head with a very thin lacing.... Aroma of citrusy and piney hops, oranges, grapefruit and light caramel malts .... Taste of bitter citrusy hops, grapefruit and tropical fruit, a bit piney and resiny with a slight caramel malt on the back end ... Very up there on the Ibus ... Dry and a nice balance of piney and citrusy hops .... Has a very nice dry resiny bitter piney bite that lingers for a while abv hidden well. Solid
4.0 Pours hazy golden copper with thin head. Smell is danky of pine, resin, mango and citrus. Taste starts sweet with flavors of resin, pine, mango, orange and then a bitter finish. Complex. Light body light carbonation
3.6 Pours a cloudy, murky, nasty looking gold. Tastes and smells of pine and slight citrus. Quite bitter, but not overwhelming on the palate. A good drink, but not necessarily the one of choice.
3.7 On tap at the brewpub, served in a shaker. Pours hazy golden with a small white head that fades to a thin cover and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. The nose has huge pungent notes of resin and grapefruit, along with a smaller amount of tropical fruit. Pale malts and grass are present, but subdued. The flavour is moderately bitter with resinous notes and grapefruit peel coming to the fore. Bitterness picks up on the back side, leading to a long, bitter resinous finish with a touch of pepper. On the palate it is medium in body with a smooth milky texture and average carbonation. Overall a very nice IPA with a huge resin-citrus nose and an impressive bitterness to match. Very well done. 2014-04-27
3.7 Tasted at Bullfrog (Wlliamsport, PA) with ML. On tap. Pours cloudy gold with pale white head. Aroma is classic IPA hops, citrus, and pine, with notes of grass, but with sweet malts as well. Flavour is a well polished balance of pleasantly bold hops and malts. Fine IPA. A perfect way to start the day :).
3.7 This one poured a darker straw yellow, almost orangw with a white head. Aroam was of fresh cut fruit, grapefruit, and some grass. Flavor was similar, fruity, light floral notes, not malt getting in the way. Pretty solid.
3.8 Draft at Bru Craft. Murky yellow/orange pour with just a slight bit of foam on top. A very juicy IPA! Big citrus hop resins. Clementines. Pineapple cores. Grapefruit pith. Peaches. Watercress. Celery hearts. Green peppercorns. Light malty sweetness up front. Complex hop bite in the finish. Very refreshing. Well done.
3.6 Bottle shared by Alan. Pours copper gold with white head. Nose and taste of faint/stale hops, caramel malt, light brett, bready malt, wood and orange peel. Medium body.
3.7 Very nice beer. Pours a light amber with a thin head, The aroma has a good bit of fruit and citrus. The flavor is sweet up front but gives way to a nice hop bite. Dry and refreshing.
3.6 Draft at craft ale house. Pours hazy orange with a medium sized white head. The aroma is not the strongest but has some floral notes and light citrus. The taste has a good bit of grapefruit, a bit of orange zest, and a nice bitter kick. Very nice local.
3.7 Pours a clear orange with a lasting white head. Aroma of resinous hops. The taste is slightly bitter but the beer is smooth. Great IPA.
3.7 Draft at HOTB. Clear golden color. Really nice fresh floral/citrus aromas. Medium to heavy bitterness. Taste is citrus, pine, resin notes. Nice hop bitter flavors. Aroma better than taste but still good. Well done.
3.8 On tap at Pinocchio’s, Media. Very nice to see this on tap. Bullfrog’s no longer the "it" beer, since the hype machine has turned elsewhere, but their offerings are still super good. Luminous orange pour, with a sizable head. Bright and fresh looking. Nose is very dry, with bitter grapefruit and some peach in there too. Full, buoyant mouthfeel with just a touch of bitterness on the tongue. Taste is quite grassy and pungent, though the fruits are still in there quite pleasantly. Pretty damn good.
3.3 On tap at Pinocchio’s. Light golden pour...smallish head. Aroma of tropical fruit. This one is citrus hops...not much else. Thin in the mouth. It was okay...but a bit disappointing.
3.8 On tap at Blue Dog in Chalfont, PA. Expected a pretty average IPA, but this was a tasty blend of hops with just enough bite going down. Pretty impressive brew.
4.0 Pours light hazy golden with an orange hue. Aroma brings some sweet and lightly juicy citrus lemon notes, so clean. Flavor brings a hop citrus bitter bite, so nice, that settles so well on the palate, definitely a smooth bite. Body is juicy and just a tad syrupy.
3.7 Pours pale gold with a white head. Aroma is citrus, pine and grass...lots of hoppyness. Taste is bitter with a touch of sweetening. Medium bodied with a dry, crisp finish.
3.9 Floral nose from the hops is upfront and present the whole way through. This was a very good 2XIPA.
4.2 Great ipa. Pale malted, lighter color. Piny deliciousness. Had at brewpub, always fresh there.
4.0 Draft at Capone’s. Pours a hazy yellow with very little head. Aroma is slightly dank citrus hops. Taste is pretty dry, which allows the hop flavor to dominate the feel. Not overly bitter and slightly prickly in its flavor. Not over the top and very drinkable.
3.8 [4664-20120817] Tap. Sweat and fresh pine resin and lemon evergreen needle hops aroma. Hazy, light brown orange with a quick foamy white head. Lemon zesty evergreen hops flavour is bitter with a great citrusy background. Medium body. Delicious. (7/3/8/4/16) 3.8 (@ brewpub, Williamsport, PA)
4.0 Lots of citrus and pine resin in the nose, floral and aromatic. Light golden pour, white head with decent retention and lacing. Flavor is nicely balanced, fairly hop-forward with some toasty malt and a hint of sweetness. Grapefruit, some tropical fruit, pine, moderate-high bitterness with a nice hoppy finish, alcohol is noticeable but unoffensive. Medium body and carbonation. A very nice IPA.
4.3 Fresh growler courtesy of Frank. Pours a bright, hazy orange body with nice white lacing that lasts throughout. Aroma is pine, grapefruit, light funk and tropical fruits. Mouthfeel is medium, super sessionable and refreshing with notes of bitter grapefruit, lemon, pine, light dank herb, light floral flavors, and a dry finish. Super Fresh. Earlier Rating: 3/31/2009 Total Score: 4.2 On Draft at the BF Brewpub. Pours a hazy orange bod with some head. The aroma is awesome. The taste is fresh hop and some citrus.
4.4 Growler courtesy of Frank. This was a fresh hop Edgar made with Citra. Hazy somewhat glowing orange copper pour, medium white head and lacing. Notes of skunk, wood, pine, grapefruit, light melon, tropical zest, and some more bitter and dry lemon wood flavors in the finish. Kept going back for this and the amarillo hopgasm during the sess. Dankness. Earlier Rating: 7/18/2012 Total Score: 3.7 Fresh Growler pour compliments of Evan, Pours a cloudy orange with small to medium white head. Aromas of grapefruit citrus, english malts, and maybe some pineapple. Taste has some nice fresh, bitter hoppiness. Notes of caramel, oranges, grains, and melon. Well executed.
3.7 2012-08-17. Lightly hazy golden orange body with a small head. Pleasant flavour with lots of sweet orange citrus, hints of melon and tropical fruit, tangerine. Modest bitterness throughout suits it.7++ Smooth average plus bodied palate is softly carbonated. 3+ Sweet orange citrus in the aroma, tangerine notes, and mild leafy green hop touches as it warms up. Quite nice. Very drinkable, and the best beer on tap today by far. On tap at Bullfrog, Williamsport
3.7 Growler shared by durwoodx. Thanks Darrell! The beer is clear and bright orange with a small head and minimal lacing. The aroma is primarily of candied citrus fruits. The flavor brings more of the same. The beer is very hop forward, with little malt presence. The feel is a bit sweet and sticky and coats the palate with a lasting bitterness. Overall, another solid beer from Bullfrog. Serving type: growler Reviewed on: 04-17-2011
4.1 Draft. Golden orange pour with white head. Citrus, pine, earthy grassy hop notes dominate this brew. Nice and fresh, aromas are similar if a bit muted at this temperature.
